A young cyclist from Kashmir's Lolab valley recently set out on a journey of several thousand kilometres toward Makkah to perform Umrah. A GoPro (camera) was already fixed to his handlebars. Within days, clips of his departure travelled faster than he did, gathering views while he was still pedalling from Kashmir to Delhi. He is not alone. Across Kashmir, Kerala, Pakistan, Malaysia and Turkey, a growing number of young men have taken to bicycles and their own feet to reach the holy cities, each journey filmed, narrated and watched by an audience that will perhaps never follow. This is not just a story about faith, though faith runs through every mile. It is a story about what happens when an old religious practice gets pulled into a modern game built around visibility, attention and reward. We spent time reading comment sections under posts about this cyclist who is perhaps accompanying a friend too. Roughly five out of every ten comments from young followers had nothing to do with faith. They treated the journey as an adventure sport, a bid for reels fame, or a stepping stone toward becoming an influencer. The pilgrimage has never been more visible, yet the pilgrim has rarely been so pulled in two directions, caught between his wheels and an audience waiting for updates. Pilgrimage has always involved hardship and witnesses. Earlier travellers kept diaries later pilgrims cherished. Documentation itself is not new. What has changed is who it is recorded for. Today's pilgrim broadcasts almost in real time to strangers scrolling on their phones. The room no longer has walls. A pilgrim on a bicycle performs not only for family and hosts along the way, but for a scattered, invisible audience checking in from their screens, until performance and pilgrimage start happening at the same moment. Classical Islamic thought has its own word for this drift: ghaflah, heedlessness, where one can travel without truly arriving, worship while the mind rehearses captions and imagines how the next clip will land. Its opposite is hudur, presence, the quiet discipline of letting the heart travel with the body, needing no audience. None of this is necessarily dishonesty. It rarely looks like vanity. It arrives dressed as sincerity, in prayers for safe passage and honest talk of sacrifice. But sincerity and performance are not opposites. They walk together more than we admit, as a private act gets pulled into a public marketplace where devotion becomes something to be liked, shared and counted. When millions of Muslims now fly to the holy cities each year, arriving by bicycle or on foot after months on the road becomes a rare, costly way of signalling sacrifice that a plane ticket cannot. These pilgrimage videos follow a familiar shape: the emotional send-off, the gruelling middle stretch, the triumphant arrival. The religious content sits inside a format built for something else entirely. Consider Shihab Chottur, a young man from Kerala who in June 2022 set out on foot for Hajj, walking roughly 8,650 kilometres through Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait over 382 days, reaching Makkah in June 2023. His journey, documented daily on YouTube and Instagram, drew crowds in town after town. Chottur shows this is not new, but the spectacle around his walk shows how thoroughly pilgrimage and broadcast had merged. However, none of this means the sincerity on display is fake. Many of these travellers describe the experience as among the most meaningful of their lives, and that deserves to be taken seriously. What often drives the urge to film every mile inside the holiest spaces, from Tawaf around the Kabah to prayer inside Masjid an-Nabawi, is a quieter fear: that hardship left unrecorded might go unnoticed, that sacrifice unseen counts for less. This is a generation raised to believe experience only becomes real once someone else has seen it. Not every step toward Makkah needs to concern a following back home. Devotion does not need an audience to prove it was real. It can be a subtle form of riya (show-off) too. The fix is not throwing the camera away entirely, since even the earliest pilgrims left letters travellers cherished. It is putting the journey and its documentation back in the right order. Before filming, a traveller might ask honestly: am I recording this because it deserves to be remembered, or because I fear nobody will believe it happened unless they see it? Some hours, certainly those spent in Tawaf and prostration, are better left undocumented, held only in memory and in God's sight, which was always sufficient before any camera existed. What matters here is niyyat (the intention). Islamic law is built on the principle of istita'ah, capacity; Hajj becomes obligatory only on those who are financially secure enough to go without debt, physically able, and travelling a safe route, never on those who seek out hardship as a virtue in itself. The law and the principle of capacity are clear. The Hajj and Umrah should be a time for growth and reflection, not just a way to show off on social media. Even as a section of the new generation seeks costly, hardship-laden routes to Makkah for visibility, a much larger and quieter crisis sits closer to home. In much of South Asia, Hajj and Umrah have been steadily over-ritualised into an economic burden that has little to do with scripture. Customs like elaborate farewell feasts, expensive new wardrobes, gold jewellery and gifts for all relatives on return, and days of hosting guests before departure and after return, can cost as much as the pilgrimage itself. Our ulema should speak openly on these over ritualised issues. For a poorer believer without a following to build or a story to sell, these unnecessary customs, not walking or cycling, genuinely place Hajj and Umrah out of reach. If this generation's spectacular journeys teach us anything, it should be to ask why we have made an already difficult obligation harder still through custom, while chasing an entirely different kind of difficulty for an audience of strangers. Is it fair to turn such sacred journeys into mere adventure purely for social media following? If such adventures become a trend among young people, we must ask what the consequences could be for parents waiting at home and for the safety of travellers, always male youth, walking or cycling through dangerous zones to reach the pilgrimage. The question that many neitzens pose is whether such pilgrims will continue their journey to Makkah without broadcasting it live on social media platforms? JK Bank Diary at 25: A Retrospective
EXCERPTS RK: JK Bank Diary has completed 25 years and more than 1,300 episodes. What, in your view, explains its unusual longevity when most institutional radio programmes do not survive this long? Abid: I believe its longevity lies primarily in its ability to remain connected with the people while serving the communication needs of the Bank. Institutional programmes often become repetitive because they treat communication as publicity. JK Bank Diary , at its best, treated it as a conversation with the society. Another important factor has been consistency. Twenty-five years and more than 1,300 episodes represent an enormous institutional memory. Generations of listeners have grown up with the programme, and many have developed a sense of familiarity and trust with its voice. Its survival also owes much to the fact that it has adapted to changing times. The programme has never been entirely static. Its subjects, presentation, language, treatment and formats have evolved with the Bank, the economy and the media environment. RK: When the programme was launched in 2001, what gap in the Banks communication with people was it meant to fill? Abid: In 2001, radio was perhaps the most effective medium for reaching people across Jammu & Kashmir, particularly those who were outside the reach of newspapers, television or emerging digital media. The programme was conceived to take the Bank closer to ordinary peopleto explain its products and services, communicate important information and create a direct communication channel between the institution and its customers. But I think its larger significance was that it humanised an institution. A bank can otherwise appear to people as counters, forms, procedures and officials. A radio programme could give the institution a voice, personality and sense of accessibility. RK: Over these 25 years, Kashmirs economy, banking habits and media landscape have changed dramatically. How has JK Bank Diary changed with them? Abid: The change has been enormous. Banking itself has moved from traditional branch-based transactions towards ATMs, digital banking, mobile applications, online payments and increasingly cashless transactions. The communication style therefore had to change as well. The programme could no longer simply announce products or read out institutional information. It needed to explain things in simpler language, use more engaging formats and address issues that mattered to contemporary customers. I also believe the programme gradually moved from being predominantly product-oriented towards being more customer-oriented. That shift is important because today's banking customer wants to know not only what the Bank offers , but also how it affects him or her . RK: The programme has continued through the 2005 earthquake, the 2014 floods and the Covid pandemic. Was there ever a crisis when you genuinely feared it might not continue? Abid: There have certainly been periods when the continuation of any regular production activity could have been questioned because of circumstances beyond our control. The Covid pandemic was perhaps the clearest example, when normal production, movement and interaction became extremely difficult. But the remarkable thing about a long-running programme is that it develops institutional resilience. When circumstances change, the format and method of production can change, but the communication objective remains. In that sense, I never regarded a disruption as necessarily the end of the programme. I regarded it as a test of our ability to adapt. I was Incharge of the Programme those days and would ensure to present myself in the office on Thursday and Friday to make the programme. We were not allowed to record the programme in Radio Kashmir Srinagar (Now All India Radio Srinagar) because of Covid-19 but then necessity became the mother invention and we recorded in the programme either in Conference Hall or in the Auditorium of the Bank. My editing skills came into effect and nobody ever noticed those glitches in the rough recordings. RK: The programme has often been described as more than a publicity exercise. What tangible difference has it made to financial literacy or banking access in J&K? Can you give a concrete example? Abid: Its most important contribution, in my view, has been in making banking information understandable to ordinary people. Financial literacy is not always about complicated financial concepts. Sometimes it is simply explaining a product, a facility, a digital service, a procedure or a customer's rights in language that a person can understand. A good radio programme can reach a listener in a remote area who may never attend a formal financial-literacy workshop. When such a listener learns through the programme how to use a banking facility or understands a new service, the programme has performed a meaningful public-service function. The real measure of such communication is therefore not applause or ratings alone, but whether the information helps somebody make better use of the banking system. RK: You have headed the programme at a crucial stage of its evolution. What is one significant change you personally introduced that you believe made JK Bank Diary better or more relevant? Abid: One of the most important things I tried to do was to make the programmeless like a conventional institutional broadcast and more like a professionally produced radio programme. I introduced and encouraged formats that gave the programme greater variety and a human dimension. Among these was Dil Se , a segment built around conversations and experiences involving customers of the Bank. Introduced our own capable staff instead of paid outside artists. Because from the day-one I believe the Bank has very talented staff and they can prove their mettle whenever given a chance. I also worked on the scripting and presentation and introduced small skits around banking products and services, because I believe people remember a situation or a story much better than a dry description of a product. I also assured that every programme goes on our official website and Banks Intranet site. And from that period, I think every episode is now available on digital platforms of the Bank. Another change I am particularly fond of was refreshing the signature tune with new music and lyrics. Talha Jehangir wrote those beautiful lyrics which Raja Bilal and Shahi Mumtaz sung with thrilling music. The opening credit was also pre-recorded in the remarkable voice of Bashir Arif, the former Deputy Director General of All India Radio. These may appear small changes, but collectively they gave the programme a more contemporary identity. RK: When you had a long standing in writing and broadcasting, why you were not the part of the programme prior to 2018? Abid: That is an interesting question. My association with broadcasting and writing actually predates my involvement with JK Bank Diary. I had been associated with radio and television as a broadcaster, writer, poet and scriptwriter on a casual basis before I joined the Bank. However, when I joined the concerned Press Relations Cell (Now Corporate Communication Deptt), the JK Bank Diary programme had just started and unfortunately the higher Bank management didnt gave me any chance in the programme despite that I was an approved casual Announcer of Radio Kashmir Srinagar those days doing live programmes like Aap Ki Farmayish, Aaj Ki Surkhiyan, Payame subh, Sports programmes etc. There was, therefore, a gap between my professional background and my opportunity to contribute to the programme. Interestingly, during that period I continued to write and translate for the Bank through outside assignments. In fact, there was an irony in the situation: work involving my writing and translation skills was sometimes being commissioned from me externally, even though those skills were not being utilised within the Bank's own communication setup. Yes, my real opportunity came in 2018, when a restructuring brought me back to what had by then become the Corporate Communications Department. I saw it as a first and foremost opportunity to do what I had wanted to do for years. I was able to bring my broadcasting experience, writing skills and creative ideas into the programme. So, I would say I was not absent from the world of broadcasting during those years; I was simply not given the opportunity to bring that experience to JK Bank Diary until much later. RK: What did you find was not working when you took charge, and what was the first thing you changed? Abid: I felt that some aspects of the programme had become unnecessarily conventional and predictable. For example, long film songs were being used during the programme. In a programme for which the Bank was purchasing valuable broadcast time, I felt that four or five minutes of an unrelated film song was not the best use of that time. I replaced this with the relevant crux or stanza of a song wherever music was required. I also felt that excessive personalisation of the programmerepeatedly identifying the names of narrators and ending with elaborate credits such as Scripted, Presented and Directed by...could sometimes shift attention from the JK Bank to the individuals producing it.My philosophy was simple: the programme should promote the Bank and serve its listeners, not promote the people making the programme. RK: Can you recall one decision or experiment you took a risk on that initially faced resistance but eventually worked? Abid: The introduction of small dramatic skits around banking products and services was one such experiment. Institutional communication naturally tends to favour straightforward narration because it appears safe and controlled. I believed, however, that a short, well-written situation could communicate a banking concept more effectively than several paragraphs of narration. Similarly, introducing customer voices recorded via Call recording throughthe segment Dil Se brought an element of authenticity that conventional institutional presentation sometimes lacks. These ideas required a change in mindset: from simplytelling people about the Banktoshowing them how banking relates to their lives. RK: How much editorial freedom does JK Bank Diary actually have? Can the programme raise uncomfortable questions or discuss customer grievances even when they involve the Bank itself? Abid: Yes, it always had. Thanks to the top management of the Bank, who trust its employees. There is necessarily a balance between editorial responsibility and the programme's institutional character. It is, after all, a programme of the Bank and cannot operate as an entirely independent investigative platform. However, that does not mean communication should be one-sided. Customer concerns, difficulties and grievances are important because they provide the institution with a picture of how its policies and services are experienced on the ground. I believe the right approach is constructive independence within an institutional frameworkraising genuine issues responsibly, seeking clarification and giving customers a voice without turning the programme into an adversarial platform. The credibility of an institutional programme ultimately depends on how honestly it treats its audience. RK: Has the programme ever influenced a decision, policy or practice within J&K Bank because of feedback from listeners? Abid: Not influenced any decision, but yes questions, responses and difficulties communicated through the programme provide an informal but important feedback mechanism. For me, one of the most satisfying aspects of such feedback is when a listener's question exposes a communication gap. Sometimes the problem is not that a facility does not exist, but that people do not know about it or do not understand how to access it. That itself is something the programme can help correct. RK: In 2001, radio was a mass medium. Today people consume information through YouTube, Instagram, podcasts and short videos. Why does JK Bank Diary still need radio in 2026? Abid: Because radio still has something that digital media often struggles to replicate:intimacy and accessibility. A person can listen to radio while travelling, working, driving or carrying out daily activities. It does not require the same level of visual attention as a video platform. More importantly, radio continues to have tremendous relevance in a geographically and socially diverse region like Jammu & Kashmir. That said, I would not argue that the programme should remain confined to radio. In 2026, the wiser approach is to make radio the original communication platform and extend its content through digital platformsshort videos, podcasts, social media clips and other formats. The future is not radioversusdigital. It is radioplusdigital . RK: Do you think the programme has sometimes become too institutional or promotional? What is the biggest criticism you would accept about it? Abid: Yes, that is a criticism I would accept. Any programme owned and sponsored by an institution carries the inherent danger of becoming overly promotional. There is always a temptation to talk about the institution rather than talk to the people. The biggest criticism I would accept is that, at times, the programme could have been more conversational, more questioning and more focused on the listener's perspective. But that is also precisely why I tried, during my tenure, to introduce more human voices, creative scripting, customer interactions and dramatized formats. An institutional programme earns credibility when the audience feels that it is being spoken with , rather than spoken at . RK: If someone wanted to understand Kashmirs economic and banking journey over the last 25 years, how much of that story is preserved in the programmes recordings, scripts and listener interactions? Abid: A considerable amount. The programme has effectively been an audio chronicle of the region's changing relationship with banking. Across more than 1,300 episodes, one can trace the movement from traditional banking towards ATMs, electronic banking, digital transactions, financial inclusion and modern banking services. The value is not confined to the scripted content. Listener interactions, questions and reactions also reflect what ordinary people were concerned about at different points in time. I believe the archive of JK Bank Diary therefore has potential historical value. Properly catalogued and preserved, it could become an interesting oral and institutional record of J&K's economic and banking transformation over the last quarter century. RK: After 1,300-plus episodes, what do you think JK Bank Diary has failed to do and what would you change if you were launching it today? Abid: If I were launching it today, I would design it as amulti-platform communication property from day one, rather than primarily as a radio programme. The core radio programme would remain, but every episode would be conceived with multiple outputs: a podcast version, short social-media clips, customer stories, explainers, visual snippets and perhaps interactive digital segments. I would also give greater space to ordinary customers, entrepreneurs, young people, farmers, students and small businesses. Their experiences can tell the story of banking much more powerfully than institutional narration alone. And I would place even greater emphasis on financial literacy, digital safety, responsible borrowing and understanding modern financial services. The programme's next 25 years should be less about simply producing more episodes and more about creating more meaningful conversations . RK: If you had to identify one moment, one episode or one intervention from your own tenure that best represents what JK Bank Diary has achieved, what would it be and why? Abid: I would find it difficult to identify a single episode because what I value most was the transformation in the way the programme was conceived and presented. If I had to choose one intervention, however, I would choose the introduction of Dil Se the idea of bringing the customer's voice into the programme. Those dramatic skits of our services and Products and of course my own couplets mostly loved by the listeners. For me, that represented the philosophy I wanted to bring to JK Bank Diary : The Bank should not always be the only voice speaking. Its customers should also be heard. Alongside that, the refreshed signature tune, the new opening credit, the sharper scripting, the use of short skits and the removal of unnecessary programme filler were all part of the same effortto make the programme sound fresher, more professional and more relevant. Perhaps the most satisfying part of the journey was that a programme which had started as an institutional communication initiative could also become a creative platformone that combined banking information with storytelling, music, customer experiences and the human voice. That, to me, is the real achievement of JK Bank Diary : 25 years later, it is not merely a record of what the Bank wanted to say; it is also a record of how the Bank and the people of J&K communicated with each other through changing times. Hijab integral part of Islam: Muslim clerics criticise Allahabad HC order
Lucknow , August 25 : Muslim Clerics have Tuesday criticised the Allahabad High Court's order, dismissing a petition filed by a minor student of a school in Prayagraj, who had sought permission to wear a Hijab additionally along with the prescribed school dress code. The court observed that the petitioner failed to present any religious scriptures or material to prove that wearing a scarf is an essential part of her religion, without which her faith would be affected. The court also noted that in the photographs, other students from the same religious community were seen not wearing scarves. Islamic Centre of India Chairman Maulana Khalid Rasheed asserted that Hijab was an integral part of their religion and girls should be allowed to wear it in schools, in addition to the uniforms. He told ANI, Hijab is an integral part of Islam, and there is no confusion about it. Allah himself gave the order for pardah in the Quran. So, saying Hijab is not an integral part of Islam is not correct. School uniforms should be worn by all students; however, girls should be allowed to wear Hijab, just as children from other religions wear items of religious significance when attending school. I don't think hijab is against any rules and regulations; moreover, it fosters modesty. Saif Abbas, a Shia religious leader, also echoed a similar sentiment. He argued that if a small percentage of Muslim women do not wear the Hijab, it cannot be said that it is not an integral part of Islam. We are not opposing school uniforms; the dress code should be followed. But if a student is asking permission to wear the Hijab, she should be allowed to do so as per the Constitution. Quran asks women to wear the Hijab, and it is an integral part of Islam. If some women don't wear Hijab, it cannot be said that Hijab isn't a part of Islam. A large percentage of women wear Hijab. The counsel in the court, I believe, could not make it clear that Hijab is integral to Islam. The matter should be taken to the Supreme Court, Abbas said. The Allahabad High Court stated that as long as a dress code is uniform, made in good faith, non-discriminatory, and aimed at maintaining discipline and institutional identity, the determination of the uniform falls primarily within the jurisdiction of the school. The court clarified that even if the student had been wearing a scarf in lower classes without hindrance, it does not grant her a permanent or enforceable right to compel the school to change its uniform policy. A division bench comprising Justice JJ Munir and Justice Indrajit Shukla clarified that the school is not curtailing the student's freedom of faith but is merely demanding institutional discipline, of which the uniform is an essential part. The petitioner student had passed her High School (Class 10) from the same school and sought admission into Class 11. She claimed that she had been wearing a scarf over her school uniform since Class 6 and no objection had ever been raised. However, at the time of admission to Class 11, the school management stated that wearing a scarf was a violation of the dress code and refused her admission on those grounds. (ANI)

Kriti Sanon's Raksha Bandhan ad row: Is the outrage really about tradition or about what women wear?
Kriti Sanon probably didn't imagine that tying a rakhi in a jewellery advertisement would result in one of Bollywood's most heated debates of the week. The actress' Raksha Bandhan campaign for GIVA has come under fire from a section of social media users. There are two principal objections. Kriti is dressed in an off-white bralette-style blouse with a cape and draped skirt, which some viewers believe is inappropriate for a traditional festival. The other objection is to a sequence where she ties a rakhi to her pet dog. Some also questioned the absence of conventional elements such as the puja thali and tilak. Kriti has not publicly responded to the criticism so far. But beneath the noise around one advertisement lies a more interesting question. Who gets to decide what an Indian woman is supposed to look like while celebrating an Indian festival? There is certainly a legitimate argument from the other side. This isn't footage from Kriti's private Raksha Bandhan celebration. It is an advertisement created by a brand specifically around a religious-cultural festival. Audiences are therefore entitled to judge whether its visual language feels authentic to them. A viewer saying, This doesn't resemble the Raksha Bandhan I know, is expressing an opinion about advertising. Brands routinely succeed or fail depending on whether consumers connect with their interpretation of culture. That criticism shouldn't automatically be dismissed as regressive. But somewhere between questioning the creative choices of the campaign and scrutinising how much of Kriti Sanon's body should be visible while sitting next to a man playing her brother, the conversation changes entirely. It stops being about Raksha Bandhan. It becomes about policing the woman celebrating it. And therein lies Bollywood's peculiar contradiction. Audiences routinely watch actresses in bikinis, swimsuits, plunging gowns, item songs and intimate scenes. Those images are consumed, shared, celebrated and sometimes turned into viral clips. Yet put a modern outfit inside the visual grammar of a festival and suddenly the same female body becomes a cultural question. Perhaps because Indian popular culture still places women in two oddly separate boxes. There is the modern woman of films, fashion shoots, holidays and Instagram. And then there is the supposedly different woman who enters the frame during Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, Karwa Chauth or a wedding. The second woman is expected to visually signal tradition. We have become comfortable with modernity, provided it changes clothes before entering the festival. There is another interesting layer to the controversy. The decision to include the dog wasn't an accidental gag. GIVA had already described its Raksha Bandhan initiative as Furever Sibling, built around the idea that pets have become family members for many contemporary households. The company also linked the campaign to a pet collection. In other words, what some viewers interpreted as trivialising the festival was precisely the modernisation of the ritual that the campaign was attempting. One can still dislike that idea. Not every tradition needs to be reinvented by an advertising agency. Not every attempt at being progressive or Gen Z friendly automatically works. And sometimes brands can become so desperate to reinterpret festivals that the original emotional simplicity gets lost. That criticism is worth having. What is harder to justify is the belief that there is only one authorised way of celebrating a festival in a country containing hundreds of millions of families with different customs, clothing, relationships and rituals. Traditions themselves have never been frozen photographs. Sisters tie rakhis to sisters. Women tie them to friends. Children tie them to people they consider protectors. Families living overseas celebrate differently from families in small towns. Some perform elaborate rituals; others simply tie the thread, exchange sweets and hug. And yes, increasingly, people include their pets in practically every family celebration imaginable. So the real problem with the Kriti Sanon advertisement may not actually be whether it is traditional enough. It may be that advertising today is caught between two Indias that increasingly coexist in the same household. One wants brands to reflect how lifestyles are changing. Another wants festivals, particularly their representation in popular culture, protected from excessive reinvention. Neither feeling is imaginary. The mistake begins when cultural disagreement turns into moral judgment of the woman at the centre of the frame. Kriti's blouse, GIVA's creative direction and tying a rakhi to a pet can certainly be debated. But perhaps a woman's decency doesn't need to be. Because if Raksha Bandhan is ultimately about affection, family and protection, it would be rather ironic if its biggest cultural conversation became about protecting society from an actress' blouse. A one-day Convention of pensioners, senior citizens and members of civil society was held today at Kings Palace, Kulgam under the chairmanship of Shri Lenin Sampat, State President. Chief Minister reviews roadmap to strengthen senior secondary education in J&K
Srinagar, Aug 24: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired a review meeting of the School Education Department at the Civil Secretariat here to review a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening access to senior secondary education and improving the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) at the higher secondary level in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting discussed a phased plan to upgrade 714 High Schools into K-12 composite schools, with focus on requirements of teaching and non-teaching staff, infrastructure, laboratories and other essential facilities. The proposed upgradation is aimed at ensuring continuity in school education, expanding access to Classes XI and XII and reducing dropouts at the critical transition after Class 10, particularly in underserved and geographically remote areas. The meeting also deliberated on better utilisation of existing human resources, strengthening academic facilities and improving the overall school network. The roadmap envisages a planned and requirement-based approach to expansion, besides coordination with the Government of India for necessary support under centrally sponsored schemes. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasised the need for a focused and need-based strategy to expand senior secondary education, with particular attention to accessibility and ensuring better educational opportunities for students across Jammu and Kashmir. In order to add their bit, the Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharke, President of Congress Party and the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, LoP in Lok Sabha and Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of Congress Legislature party in parliament didn't attend the main function of the Independence Day at Delhi. They virtually 'boycotted' the most important national function echoing their conduct in the recently held monsoon session of the parliament which created a very bad taste on an occasion of national prestige and honour. On the same day, all these three leaders of the Congress party were seen attending a programme at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi wherein they were seen objecting to the recitation of full national song -Vande-Mataram! This further added to the already existing distaste in this connection. The whole nation witnessed how the Congress top leadership in presence of their workers at their main office insulted the national song. This is indeed the lowest level of position that the Congress stooped to publicly in regard to Vande-Mataram that has been accorded the status of national song by the Indian constitution. In the recently held monsoon session of the parliament, Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill 2026 was duly passed by the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. The legislation amends the 1971 Act to place the national song -Vande-Mataram, on par with the National anthem, making intentional interruptions or insults a punishable criminal offense. Intentionally preventing the singing of the song or disturbing an assembly reciting it carries up to three years in prison, a fine or both. Any second or subsequent conviction mandates a minimum jail term of one year. The government of the day in recognition of the people's wishes, sentiments and the pent-up feelings for a long time, took this step to honour the national heritage and provide legal sanctity to the complete song as was written by its author Bankim Chandra Chatterji during its 150th anniversary milestone. The aspirations in this regard were expressed by the people immediately after passing the Bill and particularly during the Tiranga Yatra conducted on the sacred occasion of this year's Independence Day. What Congress leadership did, unfortunately, reflects the mindset that the Prime Minister in his address to the nation referred to when he talked about the Dimagi-Naxals active in the country. A number of politicians, the so-called intellectuals, activists and anti-Modi elements came out declaring that they are 'proud of being Dimagi-Naxals'. These elements included P. Chidambaram, Arvind Kejriwal, Mehbooba Mufti, Renuka Chaudhary and others of their ilks. Though the Union Minister Kiran Rejiju clarified that the label wasn't meant for the general political rivals, but for those who reject the constitution or back separatism and support anarchy and violence in this regard. All the above mentioned characters fit in the definition as recommended by both the Prime Minister and the Union Minister. Here it will be importantto go to some facts of history in this connection. Naxalism in its violent form began in India around 1967 during the peasant uprising in Naxalbari-Darjeeling, West Bengal. It followed the Maoist revolutionary ideology and was led by Charu Majumdar and Kanu Sanyal. Naxalism expanded through violent land seizures, guerilla type attacks on the state forces and preaching pseudo-socialism. They later joined with the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and formed a number of splinter groups to pursue their agenda of armed activity against the landlords and the state of India. The leaders of this extreme-left oriented ideology argued that the socio-economic change required armed revolution and encouraged the extremist ideas in remote villages and tribal areas in a number of states. Though police and paramilitary deployments and actions suppressed the expansion of the revolt, however, it emerged as a major security threat internally. They grew support from some key urban intellectuals and other politically connected activists and leaders and emerged as a real threat in states like Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and parts of Telangana. The high intensity violence unleashed by these Naxal-terrorists peaked around the year 2010 with nearly 2,000 violent incidents and hundreds of security and civilian deaths recorded in that single year.The active and passive support by the Urban-Naxals to this violence and the extremists involved in this carnage created a number of problems on ground for the State. On the one hand, the coordinated counter-insurgency measures, effective and aggressive camp setups by the security forces, road building and intelligence tracking reduced major rebel strongholds and on the other hand, the Urban-Naxals put all efforts to protect them legally, politically and by building a false narrative in their favour. On 25th May 2013, the Maoist insurgents in a deadly attack ambushed a full convoy of Congress leaders and workers in Jiram Ghati-Bastar region in Chhattisgarh. The ambush killed around 30 people, virtually wiping out the entire top leadership of the state Congress party. The dead included among others VC Shukla, Nand Kumar Patel, Mahendra Karma and Uday Mudliyar. The government of India in an affidavit to the SC during the UPA rule in November 2013 said that academicians and activists in urban centres had come to control 'mass organisations' organically linked to Maoists under the cover of human rights indicating how governments irrespective of political cover have seen 'urban-naxals' as a threat and noted hat these cadres are in many ways more dangerous than the cadres of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA). Sushil Kumar Shinde (UPA) led Home ministry in 2013 had clearly said 'how urban-naxal warfare was part of a strategyof CPI (Maoist) to mobilise opinion throughbodies tied to the party structure but which maintained a separate identity to avoid legal liability'. It is very unfortunate that P. Chidambaram, Renuka Chaudhary of the same Congress party and others are taking pride in being 'Dimagi Naxals' about which their own government had in the Supreme Court declared the intent and the strategy of these anti-social and anti-national elements. Salwa Judum was introduced as a state-sponsored vigilante movement against the Naxalites isome states in rural India. It was like a counter-insurgency operativein the hands of the local people that had gained bipartisan supportfrom the ruling as well as the opposition parties. Unfortunately, on thepetition filed by one Nandini Sundar, a sympathiser of the Naxals in the Apex Court, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy and Justice S.S.Najjardisbanded the Salwa Judum to the detriment of the anti-Naxal operations initiated by the then government. It was the same Justice Reddy who was later, after his retirement, sponsored by the Congress party and the other opposition parties as a candidate for the President's post. This invariably is a fit case of Dimagi-Naxal that was referred to by the Prime Minister in his speech. The BJP led NDA government immediately after assuming office in 2014 took very serious note of the activities of the Naxals and the Urban-Naxals both. Time specific plans were made to eradicate the Naxal groups. Time-scale strategy and planning was devised to organise large-scale surrenders of these extremists; and security pressure reduced their active zone significantly by the year 2026, marking a sharp decline in their geographic spread and active armed conflicts. As a travesity of justice in this regard, there are still many forces which continue to pursue the Naxal agenda in one or the other form. The expression of Dimagi-Naxals used by PM Modi has surely unmasked these elements and forced them to get exposed before the nation. It is just the beginning in this regard; more to follow in the very near future.
