In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Gurdeep spoke about his latest single as a singer, Chan Mahi. He also features in the music video alongside Aditi Sharma, and its unique, cinematic visuals have been widely appreciated. What kind of reactions have you received for Chan Mahi? The ones who are close to me and are also my toughest critics have observed that it is nothing like my regular stuff. Its a very different genre. Normally, I go for commercial music or whatever is trending. But many people told me that this song is not run-of-the-mill and that they love it. Its a slow, sad, romantic number. Iske lyrics ek pukaar hain. Chan Mahi is about a person telling his or her lover that tu mat jaa. But the beat, music and overall atmosphere of the song are completely different. You can play this song in a club, in a car or even at a house party! The video is novel a woman who repeatedly encounters her beloved in familiar spaces, blurring the line between memory and reality. How did the concept get locked? This music video is quite cinematic. Normally, a regular, formulaic music video has hook steps, four cars and girls! But since the feel of this song is different, I told music director Manil Kandwal that the video should focus on a different kind of obsession with your lover. It is like, main tere saath bhi nahin reh sakta aur tere bagair bhi nahin reh sakta. Even if I try to stay away from you, my body doesnt allow me to. My eyes, my mind, my everything leads back to you the person I love. Hence, she sees her lover in every guy she bumps into. Manil did justice to this vision of mine. He said that he would get into a serious cinema mode and treat the music video as a depiction of the feelings of someone who loves another person so deeply that they become the only endpoint. Thats what we have tried to show. How do you balance singing and composing? Is it a challenge? So, last year, I worked on a song called Sajri. I sang it, composed it and also wrote the lyrics. However, I regularly do live shows and I am also trying to do many other things. Composing is a serious process, and you need to invest a lot of time in thinking and creating a composition. Id prefer to come across as a sorted singer rather than randomly put stuff out on Instagram and YouTube. I feel that my song should make sense and impress you even if you listen to it four or five years later. Thats the hallmark of an evergreen song. Even today, we get evergreen songs like Jo Bheji Thi Duaa from Shanghai (2012), sung by Arijit Singh. Hence, instead of uploading random stuff, Id rather take my time and release songs carefully. Sadly, I am not able to devote that kind of time to composing. Hence, I source talent from outside. Thats great too, as it gives opportunities to emerging and promising artists. You recently sang a song in Haunted Echoes Of The Past, Lauta Do, and it was also a surprise Id like to thank Saregama for it. Sometimes, you need someone to make people look beyond stereotypes. Ive mostly been singing high-tempo songs that are very much rooted in pop culture. That is poles apart from the lehza and romance associated with Vikram Bhatt sahabs films. So, for them to consider Gurdeep Mehndi for a song like this was difficult. They probably couldnt even imagine me singing something in this space. I had to give an audition. I was at my home studio and sang a few lines. Thats when they realized the potential. Saregama played a big part in convincing them to try me and insisting that I am not a typical Punjabi singer. In fact, it was the Haunted song that inspired me to do Chan Mahi. I felt that if I could pull off Lauta Do, then I could pull off Chan Mahi as well. Id also like to thank Prateek Walia, who is the music composer of Haunted. When he approached me to sing the song, I decided to give it a try because I had never sung anything of this sort before. Is the Bollywood film industry warming up to you? Theres an interesting scenario when it comes to Bollywood and independent music. Those who achieved great success in Bollywood have now moved away from film music and are making waves in the independent space. For instance, Salim-Sulaiman have largely moved away from Bollywood music. On the other hand, many emerging talents feel that they cant afford to do independent songs and therefore dream of singing for Bollywood. A film song automatically gives them access to a wider audience, and sometimes crores are spent on promotions as well. But ironically, many of the champions of Bollywood music have moved away from that turf. Meanwhile, those working in the independent space are dreaming, If I get to sing in a Shah Rukh Khan film, Ill get so much visibility. To answer your question, I really want people to notice me and understand that I can sing not just Punjabi songs but different genres as well. Those who are in close contact with me are experimenting with my voice. Also, during Navratri, Ill be performing in Surat. I sing Gujarati songs too. Around 80% of my clients are Gujarati or Marwari, and I can easily perform Gujarati songs for 30-40 minutes. Jammu, Aug 31: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra on Monday urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene in the ongoing protest by medical interns and ensure an early and meaningful enhancement in their stipend. Jammu and Kashmir has probably emerged as the lowest-paying region for MBBS and BDS interns among the states and Union Territories listed in a comparative chart circulated by protesting medical interns, with a monthly stipend of just Rs 12,300, prompting them to launch an indefinite strike on Monday demanding its immediate revision to Rs 30,000. In a letter addressed to the chief minister, Karra said the demand of the protesting medical interns was genuine and deserved sympathetic and immediate consideration. Medical interns constitute an essential part of the healthcare delivery system and shoulder significant responsibilities in hospitals while undergoing their compulsory internship, he said. These young doctors routinely work long and demanding hours, including 36-hour shifts, attending to patients and performing their duties with dedication and commitment, Karra said. He pointed out that the stipend being provided to medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir was considerably lower than that offered in several other parts of the country. When interns elsewhere are being provided better financial support for comparable responsibilities and working hours, the demand of our medical interns for a reasonable enhancement in stipend merits serious consideration, he said. Karra urged Omar to direct the authorities concerned to engage with the protesting interns, listen to their grievances and work towards an early and satisfactory resolution of the issue. The Congress leader said positive government intervention at this stage would not only address a legitimate concern of the medical fraternity but also boost the morale of young doctors who contribute significantly to the functioning of hospitals and healthcare institutions. He hoped the government would prioritise the matter and take necessary steps for a meaningful hike in the stipend of medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir, in line with their responsibilities and the prevailing stipends in other parts of the country. The interns said their stipend had remained unchanged for nearly seven years despite repeated representations and protests, while the cost of living and stipends offered to interns in several other states had increased substantially. According to the comparative figures displayed by the interns, Odisha tops the list with a monthly stipend of Rs 44,319, followed by West Bengal at Rs 43,099 and Assam at Rs 35,000. Karnataka pays Rs 30,000, while Kerala offers Rs 27,300 and Delhi and Meghalaya Rs 26,300 each. The stipend in Telangana is listed at Rs 25,900, while Arunachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh offer Rs 25,000 each. Tamil Nadu's stipend is shown at around Rs 25,000, followed by Haryana at Rs 24,310 and Andhra Pradesh at around Rs 21,840. Gujarat, Bihar, Goa and Himachal Pradesh are listed at around Rs 20,000 a month, while Puducherry offers Rs 18,000.

The Gujarat government on Monday said it has extended the state-wide ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of gutkha and paan masala containing tobacco or nicotine for another year starting September 13. According to a notification by the Commissioner of Food Safety, the prohibition - in force since 2012 - will remain in place till September 12, 2027, to protect public health. The prohibition will apply irrespective of the name under which such gutkha or paan masala is sold, and cover ingredients sold separately if they are intended to be mixed to prepare gutkha or paan masala as the final product. Citing research by Tata Memorial Hospital, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and 'HAMER', the government said consumption of gutkha and pan masala is carcinogenic and significantly increases the risk of oral cancer. State-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) increased liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production by nearly 30% and kept its refineries running above full capacity as disruptions to maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz put India's energy supplies under pressure, chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney said on Monday.Addressing IOC's 67th annual general meeting, Sahney said the escalation of the West Asia conflict had disrupted global energy markets and forced the company to diversify crude sourcing, rework refinery operations and secure supplies from alternative geographies.Also Read: ONGC explores drillship acquisition/JV for deepwater capacity under Samudra ManthanFor IndianOil, the priority during this unprecedented crisis has remained crystal clear - to maintain continuity of energy supplies despite constrained sourcing options and volatile international markets, he said.India imports more than 88% of its crude oil requirement, with around 45% of crude imports and nearly 90% of LPG imports linked to the Strait of Hormuz. Any prolonged disruption to the strategic waterway therefore poses a significant risk to the world's third-largest oil consumer.Sahney said IOC responded by diversifying crude purchases, adjusting refinery operations and strengthening supply-chain coordination, while working closely with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.With close monitoring and guidance from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, our teams have responded with agility - diversifying crude sourcing, realigning refinery operations and strengthening supply-chain coordination to secure alternate supplies, optimise cargo movements and rebalance products across regions, he said.The company deployed 24-hour control rooms, daily reviews and real-time market monitoring to identify and address supply gaps. Aggregate sales across petroleum products, natural gas and petrochemicals exceeded 105 million tonnes.IOC's refineries processed a record 75.45 million tonnes of crude during the year, while liquid pipeline throughput reached an all-time high of 102.52 million tonnes. Domestic petroleum-product sales also hit a record 88.97 million tonnes.The strong operating performance extended into the first quarter of the current financial year. IOC processed a record 19.17 million tonnes of crude, equivalent to 109.4% capacity utilisation, while pipeline throughput rose to a quarterly record of 28.55 million tonnes.Its share of the domestic petroleum-products market increased to 43.1%, Sahney said.While profitability during the quarter remained under pressure from higher crude costs arising from the West Asia conflict, the strength of our operating performance gives us confidence in the underlying resilience of your company, he said.Refining capacity to cross 98 million tonnesIOC is also stepping up investments to expand its refining footprint.Expansion projects at its Panipat, Gujarat and Barauni refineries are expected to lift the company's group refining capacity from 80.75 million tonnes a year to around 98 million tonnes.As India works towards expanding its overall refining capacity to 300 million tonnes a year, IOC expects to account for more than 40% of the additional capacity, Sahney said.At the same time, the company is seeking to reduce its reliance on traditional refining by expanding into higher-growth businesses such as petrochemicals, natural gas, renewables, biofuels, green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel.IOC aims to increase its petrochemical intensity to around 15% by 2030 and raise natural-gas sales 1.5 times by the same year. It also plans to increase upstream integration to more than 10% by 2031.On energy transition, construction has begun on a large-scale green hydrogen plant at Panipat. IOC has also received ISCC CORSIA certification for sustainable aviation fuel production through co-processing at its refinery.Its renewable-energy arm Terra Clean is developing 1 GW of capacity, with another 4.3 GW under preparation.For Sahney, the disruption caused by the West Asia conflict has reinforced the importance of preparing for supply shocks before they occur.Resilience has to be built before it is tested, he said. In an uncertain world, energy security depends not only on scale, but equally on agility, diversification and preparedness.Sahney said IOC's strategy would be to evolve into a more diversified and integrated energy company while keeping India's energy security at the centre of its operations.In moments of national need, the country's energy security comes first, he said.

If approved, the proposed fee structure is expected to increase the cost of a visit for both Indian and foreign tourists looking to experience the popular lion safari. Six-Seater Safari Fee Could Rise From Rs 800 to Rs 1,800 At present, tourists pay Rs 800 for a permit for a six-seater safari vehicle. Under the proposed revision, the fee could be increased to Rs 1,800. The proposed hike would more than double the existing permit charge, making the Gir jungle safari considerably more expensive for visitors. Higher Charges Proposed for Foreign Tourists Foreign visitors could also face a substantial increase in safari permit charges. The current permit fee for foreign tourists is $80, or around Rs 7,600. The Forest Department is reportedly considering increasing it to $125, approximately Rs 11,800. Eight-Seater Vehicles and Premium Permits in the Works The Forest Department is also considering the introduction of eight-seater safari vehicles to allow more visitors to experience the jungle in a single vehicle. New Delhi , August 30 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted Mumbai-based Krishna Seshadri's initiative, India's Interactive Historical Atlas, to make the country's history more accessible and interesting. He also urged citizens, especially young people and content creators, to contribute to the campaign for a drug-free Bharat. In the 137th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi spoke on Seshadri's initiative, 'BharatRajya' saying, You go to this website, choose any one year, and you will get to know who ruled which part of Bharat at that time. This was done by Mumbai's Krishna Sheshadri. The Prime Minister said he came across Seshadri's initiative on social media on the occasion of Ashadha Ekadashi and found the idea interesting. The website, allows users to select a particular year and learn about the rulers and kingdoms that existed in different parts of India during that period. PM Modi praised Seshadri's effort and said, His effort will not only be beneficial for students of history, but it will also help us learn history in an interesting manner. Designed to make the complex geopolitical history of the Indian subcontinent engaging and accessible, the website allows users to seamlessly navigate through more than a thousand districts across multiple centuries of structural and political transformations. The website features a dynamic slider spanning thirteen centuries - from 700 CE to the present day - allowing users to enter any specific year to track shifting borders and territorial expansions in real-time. Rather than providing generalised maps, the custom database maps exactly who held power at a micro-level, showing transitioning borders between prominent regimes - including the Mughal Empire, Maratha Empire, and regional princely states. Built with a strict educational mission, the platform's underlying mapping data is completely open-source under a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license. This allows students, teachers, content creators, and media houses to freely copy, remix, and print the map layouts without requiring prior permission or copyright clearance. The PM also spoke to Seshadari, the Mumbai developer who having no prior professional coding experience, he utilized modern generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to write the complex code and build the feature-rich database from scratch. During PM's MKB programme at the end of the conversation, when the PM asked Seshadri on what other hobbies he had apart from creating the history website, the Mumbai developer said, I am a boring type of person who remains immersed in history and techonolgy. India has emerged as a key supplier of gasoline (petrol) to Russia amid a surge in Russian fuel imports triggered by Ukrainian drone attacks on refineries, ship tracking data showed. Russia's seaborne gasoline imports surged to a record around 125,000 barrels per day (kbd) in August, equivalent to a projected 470,000 tonnes for the month, as repeated attacks on its refineries disrupted domestic fuel production, according to energy analytics firm Vortexa. Indian refiners supplied as much as 1 million barrels of gasoline in the last two months, trade sources said. The supplies essentially came from Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, operated by Nayara Energy, which is half owned by Russia's Rosneft. Srinagar, Aug 29: The University of Kashmir (KU) joined the nationwide celebrations of the 15th National Sports Day with a three-day sporting extravaganza, organised by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPE&S) from August 27 to 29. The celebrations commemorated the 121st birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand and were held in pursuance of the clarion call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Held under the national theme Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat, the celebrations featured a range of sporting, educational and awareness activities. Students from various Departments of the University participated enthusiastically in the events. A pro-active leader on solo march and an inertia-ridden organisation refusing to shrug-off its lethargy; it is an interesting-phenomena, dichotomous, that has landed Congress in a bind. Not the political rivals but the partys top leadership should take the blame for this confusion, showing no hurry to extricate themselves out of this situation. There is no doubt that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is a man on the march. From a reluctant player, during his first two terms as Lok Sabha MP and in between becoming Congress president, he has come a long way to become proactive, daringly raising issues, political and societal. And above all managing to establish a connect with younger generation or the Gen Z who have steadfastly stood behind Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi during the last one decade. Squatting on a dharna outside Parliament Street Police station in support of pellet-injury hit youth, is the latest in the series of steps in this direction. The contrast between Mr Gandhi's high-profile individual outreach and the perception of a sluggish Congress party stems from deep structural decay, heavy reliance on a top-down (mostly defunct) leadership model, and disconnected regional hierarchies. When high-visibility campaigns fail to translate into organized local momentum, it exposes a disconnect between national optics and ground-level execution. This has repeatedly happened but there is no attempt to learn lessons and set the house in order. Despite his sensible interventions and thoughtful suggestions on vital national and international issues, Mr Gandhi gives an impression of still being a loner in the GOPs vast spread all over the country. That is strange enough. But why so? Does he himself need to reflect or change his approach towards the organisation by shrugging off indecisiveness? Shouldnt he adopt a proactive approach to set the party and its leaders right, as he has been doing in his solo efforts? Firstly, he must follow the dictum suggested by none other than Mr Gandhi himself. Pick up the right person for the right job with a strong rider of accountability. He needs to do this in the light of his observation that the party has been putting up the racing horse on the job to pull a cart and vice versa. Even before that while on a visit to Gujarat he had spoken about the BJP sleeper cells active in the state Congress (that scenario prevails in many states and Union Territories) and the need for heads to roll. It has been months now but the follow up action is still to come. The BJP and regional parties sleeper cells are thriving all over in the Congress network. An immediate follow up action on such counts would have given Mr Gandhi a decisive edge and created deterrence thereby making it easier for him to tone-up the organisation. if indecisiveness has portrayed his weakness, this attitude has emboldened those becoming roadblocks for the party to act more vigorously in internal sabotage. Reluctance to take hard decisions and tendency to protect even the failed horses under the garb of being favourites of someone, have become the Congresss bane. It is hard to believe that Mr Gandhi and other leaders are not aware of this malady. What is intriguing is that they are knowingly allowing such a situation to prevail at a greater cost not only to the party but the nation as well, as it weakens the position of countrys main premier opposition party in the overall democratic context. A strong reason behind Mr Gandhis loner status is that leaders around him in the AICC and PCCs have found a convenient way to shrug off their responsibilities and justify inaction by seeking refuge under the leaders umbrella. Rahul Gandhi naraz ho jayen ge (Rahul Gandhi will get annoyed) is their usual refrain to justify not taking decision in any particular situation. For instance, how could it be justified that it takes months, sometimes years to make organisational changes at the AICC or the PCCs level. It is a criminal negligence, firstly a non-performing leader is allowed to continue and secondly give him/her the organisational set up at a time when a change should have been affected, as a reward for non-performance. A case in point is the sensitive and strategic Jammu and Kashmir where Congress being a national party, other than the ruling BJP, has an important role to play but is being prevented to do so by organisational shortcomings which the high command refuses to remove. On the occasion of PCC president Mr Tariq Hamid Karra completing two-years in office, despite all the controversies he has courted due to his style of functioning and total lack of connect with the rank and file, the AICC in charge Syed Naseer Hussain rushed to Kashmir to work on providing a new organisational set-up to him as a reward. This happened in the backdrop of a controversy germinating from Mr Karras alleged no-appearance in Independence Day function held at the party office. Shouldnt completion of two-years in office be a stock taking time with Mr Karra asked to present his report card, for that reason any AICC or state/UTs functionaries? Appointment or Continuation in office shall be directly related to the performance of the incumbent which should be the thumb rule from AICC down to PCCs. Such scenario prevails in many other states and UTs with no sense of accountability attached anywhere. Apart from the states/UTs, another weak link is the non serious attitude of the some top AICC office-bearers particularly those made in charges of the states and UTs. In the absence of accountability, they are mostly living in comfort zones, at times becoming Mr Gandhis cheering brigade. How best to use the services of aging and well entrenched regional and national-level leaders, is a daunting challenge for Mr Gandhi as these leaders are making generational transition difficult. To tackle this situation, he needs to have a set of well-versed and trusted advisors rather than acting solo, which will also help in lessening over-reliance on brand-Gandhi. A classic case of this syndrome is at play in yet another sensitive border state of Punjab. The old-guard in the state is feverishly working unitedly to thwart generational change which has come in the form of Rahul Gandhi-loyalist PCC chief Mr Amrinder Singh, who like Mr Karra has also completed two years in office. Serious factionalism has risen ahead of 2027 assembly elections. No doubt the old-guard is taking undue advantage of the situation, but it is also a reflection on Mr Warrings functioning and ineffective handling by the central leadership. Such situations can only be tackled through quick and tough decisions. No matter if it involves removing a so-called loyalist in the overall interest of the party as is the case in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.
