J&K Bank signs 3 CSP MoUs in Kashmir, extends benefits to 887 employees
Reaffirming its commitment to strengthening relationships with prominent educational and business institutions across Jammu and Kashmir, J&K Bank has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) under its Corporate Salary Package (CSP) with Delhi Public School (DPS) Budgam, HK Automobiles Pvt. Ltd. (HK Hyundai) and Himalayan Motors. The agreements will collectively extend customised banking benefits and enhanced service features to 887 employees of the three institutions. The MoU with DPS Budgam, covering 341 employees of the school, was signed by Zonal Head (Budgam) Layek Ahmad Jan on behalf of the Bank and Mrs Soz on behalf of the institution. Cluster Head (Budgam) Wasim Ahmad Qadri, Branch Head (Humhama) Sheikh Nazima Asad and other senior officials were present on the occasion. LG felicitates Team Jammu Kashmir for successful Amarnath Yatra
Srinagar, Aug 30: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday felicitated the officers and personnel for the smooth conduct of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2026, describing the achievement as the success of Team Jammu Kashmir as a whole. The LG felicitated officers of the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, Civil Administration, Army, CAPFs, J&K Police, BRO, medical professionals, service providers, and other stakeholders for the successful conduct of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2026. He said the pilgrimage was a celebration of the collective resolve that transformed hardships into duty, challenges into opportunities, and service into a form of spiritual practice. Addressing the gathering, Sinha expressed gratitude to the officers, security personnel, sanitation workers, pony operators, pithu bearers, palanquin carriers, langar volunteers and medical staff who ensured a smooth, secure and dignified Yatra despite difficult terrain and adverse weather. He said the achievement was not the success of any single institution or department but of Team Jammu Kashmir as a whole. The holy yatra was conducted over 57 days, from July 3 to August 28, 2026. Adverse weather posed serious challenges for more than 10 days, yet approximately 4.80 lakh devotees had darshan of Baba Barfani. Remarkably, 82% of pilgrims completed darshan within the first 20 days, and 95% within the first month. A total of 54,000 service providers were registered, including 31,000 pony operators, pithu bearers and palanquin carriers; 6,400 tent and shop operators; and 7,700 langar volunteers. Around 1.87 lakh pilgrims availed palanquin and pony services. Ninety-three medical facilities were set up along the route, with 595 clinical beds and 26 oxygen booths. A total of 1,430 doctors and nursing personnel were on round-the-clock duty, supported by 48 ambulances. As part of a zero-waste Yatra initiative, 7,900 toilets were installed and maintained by 7,900 sanitation workers. Holding capacity was raised to 63,000 within the Yatra area and 54,000 across Jammu and Kashmir divisions. Aadhaar-based registration helped address the challenge of duplicate registrations. Real-time monitoring was ensured through twice-daily coordination meetings (at 3 a.m. and 8 p.m.) led by Dr Mandeep K. Bhandari, CEO of the Shrine Board and Principal Secretary to Lieutenant Governor, with nodal officers, police, Divisional Commissioners and camp officers. The Lieutenant Governor said the sacred yatra reflects India's Sanatan tradition and its ethos of humanity, coexistence and collective service. He noted that pilgrims from across the country returned home carrying not just a religious experience, but also the message of the region's culture and hospitality. He thanked civil society groups, political parties and religious leaders who provided support to the yatra, and reaffirmed that the discipline, energy and coordination shown during the pilgrimage should now become an enduring part of Jammu and Kashmir's development ethos. I am confident that every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir fulfilled their moral responsibility towards this yatra, directly or indirectly, and elevated the rich cultural tradition of UT before the entire country, he said. The sacred yatra of Baba Barfani has placed a clear inspiration before all stakeholders and the public that work is accomplished not by wishes alone, but by sustained effort. Through your own efforts, you have demonstrated that when resolve is collective, leadership is clear, arrangements are robust, and the spirit of service is paramount, no goal remains impossible, the Lieutenant Governor added.
Adventure Tourism : Kashmirs Untapped Promise
Kashmir has always been spoken of in superlatives. Its mountains are majestic, its rivers restless, its meadows poetic, and its seasons almost too beautiful to be believed. Yet for decades, the region has been seen mainly through the lens of sightseeing, shikara rides, houseboats, gardens, and snow-covered postcard views. That picture is not wrong, but it is incomplete. In the changing world of travel, Kashmir must now be seen not only as a place to admire, but as a place to experience. Adventure tourism offers that possibility. The conversation around tourism in Kashmir often revolves around numbers: how many visitors arrived, how many hotels were occupied, how many days the season lasted. These numbers matter, certainly. But they do not tell the full story. A tourism model that depends only on a few famous destinations and a few peak months is vulnerable. It leaves much of the regions potential untouched. Adventure tourism can change that by spreading visitors across more areas, more seasons, and more communities. The appeal of adventure tourism is not difficult to understand. Todays travellers, especially the young, are looking for more than passive leisure. They want activity, challenge, discovery, and memory. They want to trek where the paths are wild, camp where the skies are open, paddle where the waters are clear, ski where the slopes are fresh, and cycle where the roads test endurance. Kashmir already has the natural landscape for all this. What it needs is a stronger, safer, and more organized framework to support it. The regions mountains, forests, lakes, alpine meadows, glaciers, and rivers are not just scenic assets; they are adventure assets. Trekking routes in areas such as Sonamarg, Gurez, Pahalgam, Lolab, and Kupwara have the potential to attract serious outdoor travellers. White-water rafting, paragliding, skiing, mountaineering, mountain biking, angling, camping, and rock climbing can all become meaningful components of a wider tourism ecosystem. But a destination does not become an adventure hub simply because nature has provided the setting. It becomes one when the right infrastructure, training, rescue systems, and local participation come together. This is where Kashmir must think beyond symbolism and toward systems. Adventure tourism requires more than promotion. It requires mapped trails, trained guides, safety audits, weather monitoring, emergency response, equipment standards, and clear rules. A visitor may come for the thrill, but will return only if the experience feels secure and professionally managed. One accident, one poorly handled expedition, or one unsafe activity can damage confidence far more than any advertisement can build it. Safety, therefore, is not a secondary concern. It is the foundation. There is also an important economic argument. Adventure tourism can create livelihoods in places that are often left out of mainstream tourism benefits. A local guide, a trek porter, a camp operator, a transport provider, a homestay owner, a trainer, a rescue volunteer, and a food supplier all become part of the chain. Unlike some forms of tourism that concentrate income in a few urban pockets, adventure tourism has the capacity to spread opportunities into remote and rural areas. That matters in a region where employment remains a pressing concern and where young people are eager for dignified work close to home. Another advantage is seasonality. Kashmirs tourism industry has long been vulnerable to weather patterns and short travel windows. Adventure tourism can help extend the season by offering different experiences at different times of the year. Summer treks, autumn expeditions, winter skiing, and spring cycling events can keep the region active for longer periods. This diversification is not just good business; it is good policy. It makes the tourism economy more resilient and less dependent on a single flow of visitors. But there is a caution that cannot be ignored. If adventure tourism is developed carelessly, it can damage the very environment that makes it attractive. Unregulated camping, plastic waste, trail erosion, uncontrolled vehicle movement, and reckless commercial activity can quickly scar fragile ecosystems. Kashmir cannot afford a model that sells nature in the name of nature. Sustainable planning must therefore be built into every proposal. Carrying capacity, waste management, conservation rules, and community monitoring must not be treated as afterthoughts. Local communities must also be treated as partners, not spectators. Too often, tourism projects are designed from the outside and imposed on the ground with little consultation. That approach rarely works for long. People who live in the mountains know the terrain, the weather, the risks, and the rhythm of the land better than anyone else. Their knowledge should be valued, their youth trained, and their villages included in decision-making. When communities benefit directly, they become protectors of the destination rather than bystanders to it. There is also room for policy imagination. The government, tourism bodies, private investors, and local institutions can work together to create adventure circuits, certify guides, improve signage, develop rescue systems, and market Kashmir not only as a scenic destination but as an outdoor experience hub. Schools and colleges can also play a role by encouraging outdoor education, mountaineering clubs, and environmental awareness. If young people grow up seeing their landscape as a living classroom and an economic asset, the future of tourism becomes stronger. Kashmir does not need to imitate the worlds adventure destinations. It already has its own identity. What it needs is confidence, planning, and professionalism. The valleys beauty has long been its gift. Adventure tourism can turn that gift into a source of broader opportunity. It can attract a different kind of traveller, open a different kind of economy, and create a different kind of relationship between people and place. If done wisely, adventure tourism can help Kashmir move from being admired at a distance to being experienced deeply. That is a shift worth making. Srinagar, Aug 30: Kashmirs only olive cultivation belt in Salamabad area of Uri near Line of Control (LoC) is dying a silent death as the plantation continues to suffer from the lack of a reliable irrigation facility, with declining productivity threatening the future of the regions unique olive-growing legacy. To revive the 29-kanal olive plantation, the Horticulture Department is now planning to explore the possibility of lifting water from the Jhelum River to irrigate the orchard in Salamabad area of north Kashmirs Baramulla district. Officials said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared to assess the feasibility of drawing water from the river and supplying it to the plantation, which has depended largely on rainfall for moisture after its original irrigation system was damaged in the 2005 earthquake. Since there is no irrigation facility in the area, we are exploring the possibility of using water from the Jhelum River. Department will prepare a DPR and submit it to the higher authorities. Lifting water from the river is the only viable option available to restore irrigation to the plantation, a Horticulture Department official told Rising Kashmir. Another senior official said the prolonged absence of irrigation had significantly affected the health and productivity of the olive trees. The growth and productivity of olive trees have reduced considerably. Without a dependable source of irrigation, sustaining the plantation has become increasingly difficult, the official said. The plantation, established in 1987 under an Indo-Italian collaboration, originally had access to a natural stream. Water from the stream was collected in a tank and subsequently used to irrigate the olive orchard. However, the 2005 earthquake damaged the water supply system, leaving the plantation without a dependable source of irrigation. Since then, rainfall has remained the primary source of moisture for the trees, contributing to a gradual decline in their growth and yield. The department also explored other options to restore irrigation. In 2024, the Irrigation Department inspected the site to assess the feasibility of developing a groundwater source. They had proposed digging a borewell, but the plan could not be implemented because of the areas higher elevation, which makes groundwater extraction technically infeasible, the official said. The irrigation crisis has affected not only olive production but also the plantations broader objective of promoting olive oil extraction in the region. Olive cultivation in Kashmir remains largely confined to the Uri region, where relatively warmer climatic conditions and suitable soil have provided a favourable environment for the Mediterranean crop. The Salamabad plantation was established after soil studies by a British team identified the area as suitable for olive cultivation. The project was subsequently taken up in 1987 under an Indo-Italian collaboration, making it an important experiment in diversifying horticulture in the region. Local residents and growers have expressed concern over the gradual deterioration of the plantation, saying immediate intervention is needed to prevent Kashmirs only established olive-growing belt from further declining. Irrigation is the lifeline of olive cultivation. The trees require timely watering for healthy growth and better yields. Without a proper irrigation system, the plantation will continue to suffer, said 80-year-old Azad Khan, a resident of Shadra village in the Kamalkote area. Joint Director Horticulture Kashmir Javaid Bhat told Rising Kashmir that the department has written to the Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department in Uri in this regard. We have requested a detailed assessment of the site and preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed lift irrigation scheme to draw water from the River Jhelum. Srinagar, Aug 29:Kashmir chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday asserted that political parties from Jammu and Kashmir should make efforts for restoration of statehood and Article 370, saying it is their moral responsibility to raise their voice for the rights of people. Our rights were snatched away by force. Our statehood was abolished, we were made a Union territory. The government should uphold the promises made to people prior to the elections, Farooq told reporters here. The preacher also termed alleged threats to Kashmiri Pandits residing in the Valley deeply unfortunate. We have consistently reiterated that Kashmiri Pandits are an integral part of our society, history, culture, and our future. They are not outsiders, they belong here. We have always advocated for their return and will continue our efforts, as should the government, he asserted. Lashing out at the NC-led government, the Mirwaiz accused it of losing sight of its priorities. They have been unable to instill confidence in people regarding their snatched rights, the splitting of Jammu and Kashmir, and the complete disregard for constitutional commitments, he added. He said the Centre had essentially revoked all the promises made to Jammu and Kashmir since 1947. They revoked all constitutional guarantees. So, it is the moral responsibility of mainstream political parties to stand up for these issues. They must raise their voice for restoration of rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and present a unified voice in this regard, he added. On Srinagar MP Ruhullah Mehdis decision to quit the Lok Sabha and the National Conference (NC), the Mirwaiz hailed the parliamentarian as a staunch voice committed to raising peoples issues, and urged all organisations and parties of Jammu and Kashmir to follow suit. They must stand by these constitutional guarantees, the commitments they made to people, their manifesto, and their election plank, he said. He also criticised the government over hike in electricity tariff. The government must recognise that Jammu and Kashmirs economy is already going through a very fragile phase. Common, low-income citizens are in no position to endure escalating power tariffs. The administration should have deferred this increase, he said. The Mirwaiz expressed solidarity with the victims of the Nepal tragedy and their families, asserting that the flash flood disaster should serve as a warning for Jammu and Kashmir. We also reside in this Himalayan region. Over the past couple of years, we have seen changing weather patterns and climatic shifts driven by global warming. God has blessed Kashmir with immense natural beauty. Protecting this is our foremost responsibility, he said. He said while people want development, tourism and infrastructure, it cannot come at the cost of our ecology and environment. Farooq said human interference with the ecosystem is largely responsible for weather vagaries and natural disasters. While we will hold the administration accountable, we must also introspect. Unplanned and unregulated construction continues unchecked across tourist destinations and fragile hilly terrains like Pahalgam. If this persists, we are heading toward an ecological disaster. Authorities and policy experts must formulate a well-structured roadmap to safeguard this Himalayan belt, he said.
CAIT Kashmir expands leadership structure to strengthen traders voice across J&K
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Kashmir Chapter has expanded and strengthened its organisational structure with the constitution of a new core team and an advisory and coordination mechanism aimed at ensuring wider representation of the trading community across J&K. The move is intended to take CAITs trader-focused initiatives to the grassroots and establish a structured platform through which issues, suggestions and concerns of traders from different districts and markets can be represented before the concerned authorities. The chapter will be headed by Farhan Kitab as President, while Peer Imtiyaz Ul Hassan has been appointed Secretary General. The executive committee comprises Omer Bhat as Senior Vice President, Parvez Ahmad Bhat as Additional General Secretary, Farooq Ahmad Rangrez as Treasurer and Mohammad Altaf Dar as Publicity Head. To strengthen regional representation, Tariq Ahmad Magaloo has been appointed Vice President for North Kashmir, Mohammad Shafi Vice President for South Kashmir and Wasim Afrooz Vice President for Central Kashmir. Mohammad Ashraf Ganie has been appointed Chief Coordinator, while Fayaz Ahmad Wani will serve as District President, Pulwama, and Spokesperson. Speaking about the organisational expansion, CAIT Kashmir Chapter President Farhan Kitab said the objective was to build a stronger, more inclusive and responsive organisation that remained connected with traders at every level. Our strength lies in our unity. Every trader, whether from a major market or a small town, must have a voice and a platform. Through this expanded structure, we want to ensure that the concerns of traders reach the right forums systematically and effectively. We will work collectively to find solutions and create new opportunities for the business community of J&K, Kitab said. He said the new team would focus on strengthening district-level coordination, empowering market associations, addressing issues faced by traders, improving the ease of doing business, facilitating dialogue with government authorities and creating opportunities for the growth of trade and commerce in Jammu & Kashmir. Kitab also highlighted the potential of Jammu & Kashmir in sectors including handicrafts, handloom, horticulture, saffron, dry fruits and tourism. He said greater efforts were needed to provide local businesses with improved market access, branding, technology and opportunities in national and international markets. He reiterated that the CAIT Kashmir Chapter remained committed to the vision of Vocal for Local, Local to Global, with a focus on empowering MSMEs, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, artisans and traditional businesses and helping them become more competitive in the national and global marketplace. We want to transform the trading community from being merely a stakeholder into an active partner in Jammu & Kashmirs economic development. CAIT Kashmir will continue to work as a bridge between traders, industry and the government, while ensuring that no trader or market is left behind, Kitab added.
