But here is the catch: France did not fine Infosys for making employees work 70 hours. The French labour authority said the companys tracking system did not fully meet legal requirements around reliability, auditability and monitoring. Frances legal working week is 35 hours, while overtime is subject to compensation and record-keeping rules. Murthys 2023 argument was very different. He said young Indians should work longer to improve productivity and help India compete globally. The clash now is bigger than Infosys. Europe generally treats working-time records as a safeguard for employee rights. Indias corporate culture has often celebrated long hours as a sign of ambition and sacrifice.
