J-K LG calls for using AI with sensitivity
Jammu, July 15: Dr. Suresh Awasthi Smriti Nyas in Varanasi today organized a commemorative event to observe his 20th Punya Smriti Diwas. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha delivered the keynote address on AI: Effects and Side Effects. The Lieutenant Governor paid his heartfelt tribute to Dr. Awasthi, a remarkable personality who embodied knowledge and humility. He said Dr. Awasthi was a distinguished scholar and a visionary who saw political science as a powerful instrument for shaping society and strengthening the nation. The Lieutenant Governor observed that Dr. Awasthi inspired independent thinking and his ideals remain timeless, and it is imperative that the younger generation emulate his thoughts and values, channeling them into the noble task of nation building. In his keynote address, the Lieutenant Governor said that AI has changed the way we educate and hire the workforce and it has fundamentally reshaped the job market, defining the economic landscape of our era. He said there are moments in history when human civilization enters a new age. The invention of the wheel, the development of printing, the steam engine, the discovery of electricity, the spread of computers and the internet, each of these changed the world. Today we stand on the threshold of a similar new era, and AI has already reached our homes, schools, hospitals, industries, farms and government systems. It has become part of our lives. Even in far flung villages, AI is changing lives. A local health worker can now run medical checkups, farmers get instant weather and crop advice, and students get top-quality lessons in their own language, the Lieutenant Governor said. The Lieutenant Governor said that a mature society should use modern and new technology like AI with sensitivity and keeping future requirements in mind. He said India has for centuries been the bearer of a shared heritage of knowledge, innovation and humanity and our country taught the world that science and ethics are not opposites but complements. So when AI brings new opportunities before us, our duty is not only to adopt it but also to guide it in the right direction. I firmly believe that when technology is used for human welfare, it democratizes opportunity. It brings possibilities to people who were previously deprived of them. That is why we should welcome this change. The need today is not to compare humans and machines. Rather, we must ensure that machines extend human capabilities, not replace them. History reminds us that every great leap forward brings a moment of friction. Just as society evolved past the scriptorium after the printing press and abandoned the hand-plow for the tractor, we cannot turn back the clock on Artificial Intelligence. AI represents our best path forward, not as a replacement for human potential, but as a force multiplier. By absorbing the friction of routine and repetitive tasks, AI would elevate our uniquely human strengths. The future belongs to a symbiotic partnership where technology handles the mechanics, allowing the human work force to focus on what truly matters, the Lieutenant Governor said. The Lieutenant Governor stated that we must build a future where science becomes the means of progress and humanity determines its direction. Every technology revolution closes some doors but opens many new ones. The real challenge today is not about lack of opportunity but speed of change, making rapid reskilling our most urgent duty in various sectors. We should also be prepared to deal with challenges of AI-generated deepfakes which blurs the line between fact and fiction. Today, we also face an even deeper crisis that is the erosion of truth. For innovation to succeed, it must walk hand-in-hand with public trust. Citizens have a fundamental right to know where their information comes from. Today, in an AI dominated era, transparency is a necessity, the Lieutenant Governor said. The Lieutenant Governor also called upon the young generation to grab the opportunity today and focus on problem solving and critical thinking with scientific temper. Today vast trove of knowledge is available in the palm of your hand. This is an extraordinary opportunity, and the future belongs to those who know how to use it to find solutions and who can work collaboratively with diverse ideas, and who have the courage to make ethical decisions. In the times ahead we must cultivate environments in our schools and universities where Science and Sanskar develop in balance. Along with technical competence, creativity, communication, empathy and responsibility should be given equal importance. I believe ultimately the society that progresses most will be the one that makes its young people skilled, capable and sensitive. Therefore, balance must be our path, the Lieutenant Governor added. Padma Bhushan Shri Ram Bahadur Rai, President, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA); Prof Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu; members of Dr. Suresh Awasthi Smriti Nyas, distinguished speakers, academicians, eminent literary personalities and students participated in the lecture series through virtual mode.
NC should raise demand for reinstatement of special status to J&K under Art 370: Saifuddin Soz
Srinagar, Jul 15: Congress leader Saifuddin Soz on Wednesday said the National Conference should not confine its protest to Jantar Mantar for only the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir but also raise the demand for the reinstatement of special status under Article 370 for the erstwhile state. Soz, who was a member of the Lok Sabha when the NC was part of the NDA, defied the party whip and voted against the 13-month-old government of Atal Behari Vajpayee in 1999, leading to its fall. He was expelled from the NC and he later joined the Congress. The National Conference should not (only) talk about statehood at Jantar Mantar. Our issue is not of statehood. Who can snatch statehood? Can anyone keep it a Union Territory forever? Whether it's the prime minister or the home minister, no one can make the state of Jammu and Kashmir a Union Territory; this is a temporary thing, Soz told reporters after visiting the residence of NC leader and former minister Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, who passed away on Tuesday. Asked if he has been invited by the NC to the proposed protest on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, Soz replied in the negative. No, I don't even have an invitation, the former Union minister said in response to a question. Soz said the real issue of the people of J-K is internal autonomy and they should fight for the restoration of Article 370. Sometimes they say among themselves that they will not be given anything, he said, adding that this is a wrong statement for the youth. Our young generation should have this in mind that we, a Muslim-majority state, acceded to India, which had a Hindu majority. Sheikh (Mohammad Abdullah) Sahab then deemed it appropriate that at that time there were eight crore Muslims in this India. Now there are 23-24 crore Muslims, that's why we made the right decision to remain in India. But, our internal autonomy must definitely be restored on our own terms, he added.

He only wants his power back: MP Aga Ruhullah accuses CM Omar of abandoning J&K rights
Srinagar, Jul 15: National Conference MP Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on his own party's Vice President and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of abandoning the promises made to the people before the Assembly elections and limiting the political discourse to the restoration of statehood. Speaking to reporters, Ruhullah said Omar Abdullah had promised to restore what the BJP took away from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. However, he alleged that the Chief Minister has now shifted his focus solely to the restoration of statehood. He now speaks only about restoring statehood because he wants his power back, not the aspirations of the people or the promises he made before the Assembly elections, Ruhullah said. Continuing his criticism, the Srinagar MP claimed that the restoration of statehood was already part of the BJP-led Centre's stated roadmap and questioned why the National Conference had narrowed its political demand to that issue alone. If restoration of statehood is the BJP's agenda, then tell me who the real BJP agent is, he remarked.
No change in Delhi protest plan despite Mustafa Kamal's demise: Omar Abdullah
Srinagar, July 15: National Conference Vice President and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said there would be no change in the party's planned protest in New Delhi on July 20 despite the demise of senior party leader and his uncle, Dr. Mustafa Kamal. Speaking to reporters after paying tributes to his uncle, Omar Abdullah said the party would honour Dr. Kamal's wishes by going ahead with the demonstration. There will be no change in that. Neither would Mustafa Kamal have wanted any change, Omar Abdullah said, referring to the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar over issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir. He revealed that Dr. Kamal's health had deteriorated on July 11 and doctors had expressed serious concern about his condition. Despite this, National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah had directed the party to continue with its political programme. Even when we knew about his critical condition, the party president said that whatever happened to Mustafa Sahib, we had to continue with our protest. Therefore, there is no question of cancelling the July 20 protest, Omar said. On whether the party had secured permission from the Delhi authorities for the protest, Omar said approval was still awaited. Not yet. We are being made to wait. As I said earlier, we know how to be patient. We will wait and also keep an alternate plan ready, he said. The National Conference leader, however, made it clear that the party's schedule would remain unchanged. I have told my colleagues that we will definitely leave for Delhi on July 19. Even if we do not get permission for Jantar Mantar, we will reach Delhi, sit together and decide our next course of action there, he said. Omar Abdullah described Dr. Mustafa Kamal's death as a personal and political loss, recalling his contributions as a doctor, legislator and public servant. He said Dr. Kamal had dedicated his life to serving the poor, continuing to run a free medical clinic in Tangmarg even while serving as Jammu and Kashmir's Health Minister. Omar also highlighted his electoral journey, noting that Dr. Kamal was elected to the Assembly from Tangmarg in 1987 and 1996 and later represented Patan and Hazratbal through by-elections. Calling it a difficult time for both the Abdullah family and the National Conference, Omar said the large turnout of mourners reflected the impact Dr. Kamal had on people's lives.

'The Pitch Changed A Little, And Made India's Chase Easy,' Says Brook After Loss In 1st ODI
ODI World Cup: England captain Harry Brook felt the pitch became easier to bat on in the second innings after his side suffered a six-wicket defeat to India in the opening ODI at Edgbaston but admitted that his teams middle-order collapse ultimately proved decisive. After opting to bat first, England slumped from 61 without loss to 80/5 after losing five wickets for just 20 runs. A fighting 121-run stand between Joe Root (76 not out) and Liam Dawson (68) lifted the hosts to 258 before Axar Patel claimed the last four wickets to finish with figures of 4-62. India chased down the target in 45.2 overs through Shubman Gills fluent 80 before he retired hurt, while Axar Patel (57 not out) and Washington Sundar (52 not out) shared an unbroken 102-run partnership to seal victory and give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Reflecting on the defeat, Brook believed the surface behaved differently in the chase. Today, there was a poor period when we lost five for 20 runs, which has obviously made a massive difference in the game, really. I think the pitch changed a little bit from the first innings to the second innings, which made it easier for them to chase down what we thought at the halfway line was a decent score, Brook told reporters after the match. The England skipper acknowledged that the batting collapse hurt his side more than anything else, despite Root and Dawson rescuing the innings. Their partnership was vital. I thought they played it perfectly for the situation. Very risk-free, didnt really hit the ball in the air much, and got us up to what we thought was a total that we could defend, he added. Looking ahead, Brook insisted England would continue building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup while focusing on improving in the ongoing series. Obviously, the focus, the 2027 World Cup, comes into view quite heavily. There are always areas you want to get better at in any format. The World Cups a long way away, and hopefully we can come back stronger in Cardiff, he said. Brook also welcomed the return of all-rounder Brydon Carse to the squad, saying the all-round seamer adds aggression and balance ahead of the remaining two ODIs. Obviously, the focus, the 2027 World Cup, comes into view quite heavily. There are always areas you want to get better at in any format. India Need Not Make Changes If Gurnoor And Gill Are Fit, Says Irfan Ahead Of 2nd ODI
New Delhi: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes India should resist making unnecessary changes for the second ODI against England after their convincing series-opening victory at Edgbaston, saying the team's priority should be maintaining momentum while monitoring the fitness of Shubman Gill and Gurnoor Brar. India claimed a six-wicket win in Birmingham to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with Axar Patel starring with both bat and ball and captain Shubman Gill laying the foundation during the chase before retiring hurt with cramps. Fast bowler Gurnoor Brar also picked up two key wickets after appearing to struggle physically during the match. Looking ahead to the next fixture, Pathan said India have little reason to alter a winning combination, while England face the bigger challenge of regrouping after the defeat. The main thing is to maintain this momentum. It's good that you won, so there isn't much you need to change. Anyway, it's just a day's break. England will have to work very hard. They will have to manage the short turnaround and come back with better planning. So, there are more challenges for them than for India, Pathan told JioStar. India recovered from the early losses of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the chase of 259, with Gill's 80, followed by an unbeaten century partnership between Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, sealing victory with 28 balls to spare. While backing continuity, Pathan identified fitness as the only area that could influence India's selection for the second ODI. For the Indian team, my main concern would be how serious Gurnoor Brar's injury is and how serious Shubman Gill's hamstring issue is, considering he retired hurt. Those are the two things I will be watching closely, he added. Gill retired hurt after making a fluent 80, while Brar played an important role with the ball by triggering England's middle-order collapse during the first innings. Pathan added that only injury concerns should prompt changes to the playing XI, even as discussions continue about the possibility of bringing in spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Gill retired hurt after making a fluent 80, while Brar played an important role with the ball by triggering England's middle-order collapse during the first innings. F-35s, F-15s in Iran's Crosshairs? Tehran Claims Major Strike on Jordan Airbase
Tensions between Iran and the United States are escalating as Tehran claims a major drone strike against a U.S. military facility in Jordan. Iran's military says its forces targeted Al-Azraq Air Base, claiming hangars housing F-15, F-16, and F-35 fighter jets, along with MQ-9 drones, were hit during the operation. The strike was described as part of Iran's wider retaliatory campaign against American positions in the region. Jordan, however, says its air defenses intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles that entered its airspace and warned against any threat to its sovereignty. The claims come as the Middle East faces rising military tensions, with U.S. bases and allied territories increasingly caught in the crossfire.
