Srinagar, Aug 5:Khalin Joshi shot a five-under 66 to extend his lead to seven shots at 13-under 129 on day two of the INR 1 crore J&K Open 2026 being played at the picturesque Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar. The 33-year-old Bengaluru golfer, who began the day with a two-shot advantage, backed up his opening 63 with another assured display. His bogey-free round featured three birdies and an eagle as he pulled clear of Delhis Rashid Khan and Chandigarhs Angad Cheema, who shared second place at six-under 136. Starting from the 10th tee, Joshi, as per a statement, made his first birdie of the day on the 12th after striking a five-iron to two feet. He followed it with a six-foot birdie conversion on the 13th before picking up another shot on the third, where he hit his lob wedge to three feet. The defining moment came on the par-five seventh. Joshi found the centre of the fairway with his drive and struck a seven-iron from about 190 yards to 20 feet before rolling in the eagle putt. That was one of the best putts I made all day, said Joshi. I struck the ball solidly and gave myself more chances than I did yesterday, but I didnt convert as many. Considering how well I hit the ball, I probably could have shot a little lower score, but Im very pleased, especially to keep the card bogey-free. Srinagar, Aug 4: Bengaluru golfer Khalin Joshi produced a superb eight under 63 to grab the opening round lead at the INR 1 crore J&K Open 2026 at the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar on Tuesday. The 33-year-old carded nine birdies and just one bogey to finish two shots clear of the field. Chandigarh's Ajeetesh Sandhu and Gurugram rookie Harman Sachdeva shared second place after returning identical six under 65s. Joshi, a former Asian Tour winner, credited his putting and two chip ins for the impressive round. He chipped in on the third and 15th holes and said he was delighted with his performance. Speaking after the round, Joshi described Royal Springs as one of the most beautiful golf courses and said playing in Srinagar always feels like a holiday. He expressed hope of maintaining his form over the remaining three rounds. Sandhu recovered from an uncertain start with eight birdies and said a birdie on the fourth hole helped him settle into his round. He also praised the scenic beauty and hospitality of Srinagar. J&Ks menstrual hygiene usage rises to 82.5%
Srinagar, Aug 04: The proportion of women aged 15-24 in Jammu and Kashmir using hygienic methods of menstrual protection rose to 82.5 per cent in the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6, 2023-24), overtaking the national average of 79.2 per cent, according to data cited by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The question was raised by MP Prof. Manoj Kumar Jha, who asked whether the government maintains State and UT-wise data on menstrual hygiene indicators among Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) women and girls. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel gave the reply, providing a caste-disaggregated breakdown from NFHS-5 (2019-21), in which J&K's overall figure stood at 74.5 per cent, while also citing the more recent NFHS-6 national figure of 79.2 per cent. For J&K, the NFHS-5 data placed 76.1 per cent of SC women and 51 per cent of ST women in the hygienic-methods category, a gap of 25.1 percentage points, among the widest recorded across states. Since then, the NFHS-6 fact sheet shows J&K's overall figure across all women aged 15-24 climbing to 82.5 per cent, with usage at 95.5 per cent in urban areas and 79.3 per cent in rural areas, an improvement of 8 percentage points over NFHS-5. The ministry said data was not available for six UnionTerritories, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Puducherry,in the NFHS-5 caste breakdown. It added that menstrual hygiene management is being strengthened through the Menstrual Hygiene Scheme under the National Health Mission, in coordination with States and UTs, while data on water, sanitation and allied indicators is collected separately by the concerned ministries.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha extended his heartiest congratulations to teachers, administrators, and every stakeholder for the historic achievement. Out of 1,80,317 non-literates identified, 1,78,680 have passed (99.09 percent) under the ULLAS scheme. The criterion for declaring a State or UT fully literate is achieving a literacy rate of 95 percent or above, acknowledging that 100 percent literacy is unfeasible due to factors such as advanced age and intellectual abilities. So far, nine States and UTs had declared themselves as fully literate under ULLAS: Ladakh, Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand. Jammu and Kashmir is the 10th State/UT to achieve this status and has the largest population among those declared fully literate so far. States and UTs have prepared their strategies and plans and adopted best practices to achieve full literacy in accordance with the above criteria.

According to an Air India spokesperson, Earlier today, Air India flight AI2379 operating from Phuket to Delhi experienced a sudden loss of altitude during cruise. After the momentary event, the aircraft continued normally and landed safely in Delhi at 11:07 hrs IST. The Airbus A320neo aircraft was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members. Of these, 13 passengers and four crew members sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical evaluation. As of 18:50 hrs on August 4, five passengers have been discharged, while the remaining individuals continue to receive treatment and care, the airline said. Air India teams remain at the hospitals and in close contact with those affected to provide all necessary assistance and support, the spokesperson said. In accordance with established safety and regulatory procedures, the relevant regulatory authorities have been informed. Air India is fully cooperating with the investigation, and the aircraft manufacturer has also been notified. Air India's foremost priority remains the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew. We will continue to support those affected and their families and will work closely with the relevant authorities throughout the course of the investigation, the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, a passenger onboard recounted the ordeal, saying his father was thrown into the air and hit the aircraft's roof, while his mother and two-year-old daughter also suffered injuries, describing the incident as a rebirth. My father was sitting on the aisle seat and was having coffee. He was not wearing a seat belt as there was no mandatory light for it. Suddenly, a big jolt happened and he flew and hit the roof and fell on the floor, the passenger said. My mother, who was sitting near the window, had her head smashed into the overhead cabins, which got swollen. She was later treated at the airport by the Medanta team, he said. One part of the overhead cabin fell and hit my mother near her left eye and caused swelling there too, the passenger added. Recounting how his wife and two-year-old daughter were affected, he said, My wife and my two-year-old daughter also flew in the air and dropped into the passage between the seats. My daughter suffered a head injury and swelling but was also treated by the Medanta team at the airport. Since the doctor said that the injuries were minor, we were discharged and left for Chandigarh by cab, he said. Describing the experience as extremely frightening, the passenger said, I would say that it was a rebirth for all of us. There were screams and my elder daughter, who is five years old, was so scared, as were we all. But we stayed put in Waheguru, and we landed safely. Praising the flight crew, he said, The pilot did a good job in helping us calm down. The crew was very helpful.
