Removing Suryakumar Yadav As T20I Captain At This Stage May Not Be Right, Says MSK Prasad

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Former India wicketkeeper and chief selector MSK Prasad on Thursday cautioned against removing Suryakumar Yadav as captain of the mens T20I side, saying such a move at this stage would not be the right one and that selectors should instead look to groom younger leaders from now onwards. Despite a few halfcenturies in the bilateral series against New Zealand earlier this year and a matchwinning knock in the T20 World Cup opening game against the USA, consistency has eluded Suryakumar. After India won the T20 World Cup under his leadership, Suryakumars form dipped further in IPL 2026, where he managed only 270 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 147.54, with just two fifties. With Indias selectors set to meet in Mumbai on Saturday for selecting squads for the two games against Ireland, to be played on June 26 and 28, followed by five T20Is in England from July 1 to 11, apart from picking India A squad for the two red-ball games against Sri Lanka A, Suryakumars future as the T20I captain will be a hot topic of discussion. See, are you sending your first team or are you sending your second level? That's the biggest concern. So, if they are sending the first team, I think overlooking Surya is not the right thing to do because he just handed over one more Mens T20 World Cup to us. So, ideally, probably next 56 months or now you have to get ready with your next leaders, right? Axar Patel was your vicecaptain till the T20 World Cup win. Ideally, if you look at it, you have to look forward to the younger leaders. So, if you can identify such leaders and make a deputy to Surya, it will be nice to see. Surya is a phenomenal player, Prasad told IANS in an exclusive conversation on Thursday. Prasad admitted that Suryakumar has endured a lean patch but urged patience towards him. I know that he has gone through a rough patch in the last 11.5 years. Of course, we have other players like Rajat Patidar coming up, and they also deserve their places. So, what I would like to say is that, removing Surya at this stage, I think, is not the right signal. Give him a couple of series, and if his lean patch continues, then you have a deputy to whom you can hand over the captaincy baton. On possible successors of Suryakumar like Shreyas Iyer, the ODI vice-captain, and Hardik Pandya, apart from Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma in the mix, Prasad said, See, Hardik is one potential candidate. Then, Shreyas is another potential candidate, too. People like Ishan Kishan, Tilak Verma, and Sanju Samson are also in line. See, Sanju has led RR for quite some time. Ishan has led recently, and he showed glimpses of class in his captaincy. Tilak Verma is a potential guy. We think that Tilak Verma is the guy and the answer for the next few years for Indian cricket in T20 formats. So, he is not a bad choice, too. Rajat Patidar (who led RCB to back-to-back IPL titles) is also one of those. I don't know whether its from a captaincy point of view, but he is definitely a guy who should be looked into. So, you have enough ammunition with you. But are you sending your first eleven or are you sending your, maybe, probably the second eleven? Shreyas, the frontrunner to succeed Suryakumar, comes with proven captaincy credentials - having led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and guiding Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals in 2020 and 2025, respectively. Kishan captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pat Cummins absence during IPL 2026 after earlier leading Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumph. Varma, meanwhile, has been a regular leader for India A in whiteball cricket and is set to captain them in the upcoming 50over triseries in Sri Lanka starting June 9. Samson has previously led Rajasthan Royals to the runnersup spot in IPL 2022 and was adjudged Player of the Tournament in Indias T20 World Cup win. Pandya, who has captained India in Rohit Sharmas absence, also guided the Gujarat Titans to the IPL crown in 2022, though his leadership stint with the Mumbai Indians has not been that memorable. Prasad further suggested giving some players a break who featured in both the World Cup and IPL for the trips to Ireland and England. If you see, after the World Cup, all the players who played in the World Cup looked jaded and exhausted in the IPL. So, why don't you give a break to all those World Cup players and give opportunities to those who have performed in this IPL? So, in that way, you hand over that baton to Shreyas Iyer or XYZ and whoever is seen as a future leader. I think Shreyas is definitely a potential guy. So, you make and send them to Ireland because I am sure that they can beat Ireland. So, give a break to them because this IPL has been a very, very hot summer, and immediately after the World Cup. Also Read: Live Cricket Score They are already playing for the country in some form or another. So, make a good side, then Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is there too, while Abhishek and Sanju are anyway there. Give some break to all those people who looked very tired - both physically and mentally, he concluded. Article Source: IANS

Sachin Tendulkar Hails 15-Year-Old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's IPL 2026 Impact

Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar was impressed with the impact teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had on the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, saying the Rajasthan Royals opener affected the outcome of games in more ways than through the runs he scored. The batting legend also added that whenever Sooryavanshi walked out to bat, Rajasthan Royals seemed to have a renewed sense of belief. In his post looking back at the season, Tendulkar was particular about naming some of the standout performances and trends that caught his attention during the tournament. Amongst them was the phenomenal season of Sooryavanshi. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had an influence on games that went beyond the runs he scored. Oppositions were thinking about him, teams were planning for him, and fans were waiting for him long before he arrived at the crease, Tendulkar said in a post on Reddit. The 15-year-old went on to be the top run-scorer in the tournament and one of the biggest success stories. The former India skipper was more amazed by the young boy's temperament during the playoffs: His ability to score quickly in the Eliminator and Qualifier proved his intent was always the same, even as the stakes were high. Even more importantly, his batting seemed to give Rajasthan Royals an added sense of belief every time he walked out to the middle. Tendulkar also cited the dismissal of Jos Buttler by Josh Hazlewood in the 1st qualifier between RCB and RR, to highlight an instance of brilliant game awareness by a bowler: Josh Hazlewood's dismissal of Jos Buttler in the 5th over of the 1st Qualifier showed the value of deception. Buttler had hit deliveries for a 4, 6, and a 4, and once a batter settles into a rhythm like that, he often tends to commit early. He elaborated on this: What made the wicket special was how he subtly slowed down the next delivery by 10 km/hr, and Buttler had already gone through his shot by the time the ball reached him, the batting maestro said. Looking at the eventual champions, RCB, Tendulkar noted how their win was an all-round effort. Every successful team develops an identity over the course of a campaign. RCB's identity seemed to be built around shared responsibility. He reserved high praise for captain Rajat Patidar. Rajat Patidar led from the front right through, but more importantly, he helped create an environment where others could do the same. The balance between leadership and contribution was an important part of them going all the way to yet another final, he The legendary batsman, however, suggested a change to the rules, keeping in mind the course of most of the games in the season. One trend that I observed through this season was how many games were decided between overs 7 and 15. Teams are now much better prepared for Power-plays and death overs than before. Tendulkar suggested the splitting of the powerplay: I feel the Power-play needs to be split into two parts. First 4 overs as the batting Power-play and two overs of bowling Power-play, which could be utilised at any point in the innings. If implemented, this could become the most strategic phase of T20 cricket, he said. Tendulkar was also full of praise for Punjab Kings for their attitude, despite failing to win the trophy: Punjab Kings brought wonderful energy to the tournament. Their cricket was positive, brave, and at times game-changing. According to him, the lesson learned from Punjab's season was to strike a balance between process and results: Momentum plays a big part in lengthy tournaments, and eventually in such a quick tournament it comes down to process and not attaching yourself to the results. Punjab seemed to focus on the process in the first half, and on results in the second. I feel the Power-play needs to be split into two parts. First 4 overs as the batting Power-play and two overs of bowling Power-play, which could be utilised at any point in the innings. If implemented, this could become the most strategic phase of T20 cricket, he said. Also Read: Live Cricket Score Reflecting on IPL 2026, Tendulkar emphasised the importance of adaptation. When I reflect on IPL 2026, I was once again reminded that tournaments rarely follow a predictable course from the start. More than one instance this season, the table told a very different story at the mid-point compared to what we see at the end of the competition. He added. The teams responded, adjusted, and new strategies were developed as the competition grew. The game is all about continuous development, and that's what makes watching it so compelling. Mrs Neerja Birla Leads Mpower Initiative with BTECH to Expand Evidence-Based Suicide Prevention Programme in India

In a significant step towards strengthening India’s mental health ecosystem, Mpower, an initiative of the Aditya Birla Education Trust (ABET) founded by Mrs Neerja Birla, has partnered with the globally renowned Behavioral Tech Institute (BTECH) to introduce a structured, evidence-based Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) programme in India.   This programme represents an important step in addressing high-risk mental health conditions, with Mpower being among the early mental healthcare providers in India to introduce a structured and evidence-based DBT programme at scale , particularly for individuals at risk of suicide and self-harm.   Representatives from Mpower, Behavioral Tech Institute, Marsh India, and participating clinicians during the ongoing DBT Intensive Training Programme in Mumbai   The initiative, which is also supported by Marsh India as part of its CSR commitment to enabling mental health initiatives in India, is being implemented through an ongoing DBT Intensive Programme in Mumbai for the first cohort, marking the beginning of a year-long structured capability-building journey aligned with global standards followed by the Behavioral Tech Institute. It goes beyond one-time training and includes foundational and advanced modules, ongoing case-based consultation, team-based learning, and real-world clinical application, ensuring sustained capability building.   India continues to face a significant mental health burden, with over 170,000 suicide deaths reported annually. Nearly 35-40 percent of these cases are among young people aged 15 to 29, with notable variations across gender. Despite this, access to structured and evidence-based interventions for high-risk individuals remains limited, particularly within public healthcare systems.   The programme has brought together leading clinicians and institutions, including NIMHANS, Punjab Health Ministry, Sion Hospital, Nair Hospital, KEM Hospital, Thane Regional Mental Hospital, Mindset Wellness, and Masina Hospital, as part of its first cohort aimed at strengthening the public healthcare system, reflecting a growing and multi-institutional commitment to building frontline clinical capacity.   Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Dr. Marsha M. Linehan, is globally recognised for its effectiveness in reducing suicide attempts, self-harm behaviours, and psychiatric hospitalisations. Its structured and skills-based approach makes it particularly relevant for individuals experiencing severe emotional distress and those at high risk of suicide. Over the next five years, Mpower aims to build a robust network of DBT-trained clinicians and enable the adoption of structured DBT protocols across leading public and private healthcare institutions, helping to bridge the gap between clinical need and access to specialised care in India.   Speaking on the initiative, Mrs Neerja Birla, Founder and Chairperson, Mpower and Aditya Birla Education Trust, said, “India is at a critical inflection point in its mental health journey. While awareness is increasing, there remains a significant gap between need and access, particularly for those at high risk of suicide and self-harm. DBT represents one of the most rigorously validated therapies globally for individuals in severe emotional distress. Through this collaboration, we aim to build clinical capability, equip practitioners with structured tools, and contribute to building more responsive and resilient mental healthcare communities in India by 2030.”   Mr Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh India and President and CEO, Marsh India Insurance Brokers Private Limited, added, “Mental health is integral to societal and economic resilience. Supporting structured and evidence-based approaches such as DBT aligns with our commitment to enabling stronger and more prepared communities.”   Dean Lester, CEO, Behavioral Tech Institute said, “India’s need for high-quality and evidence-based mental health interventions is both urgent and significant. Through this collaboration, we are supporting the development of clinical capabilities aligned with global standards.”   This programme represents an important step towards strengthening India’s mental healthcare ecosystem by building clinical capacity, enabling structured interventions, and improving outcomes for individuals at high risk.   About Mpower Backed by Aditya Birla Education Trust, Mpower is a pioneering holistic mental health initiative, now marking a pioneering holistic mental health initiative marking a decade of impact in transforming mental health awareness and care in India.Since its inception in 2016, under the leadership of Mrs. Neerja Birla, Mpower has been committed to building an inclusive ecosystem where individuals and their caregivers receive professional support, compassionate care, and acceptance—free from stigma or discrimination.   Through a multidisciplinary and integrated approach, Mpower delivers impact across a diverse ecosystem—including clinical services, outreach and awareness programs, institutional partnerships, helplines, educational initiatives such as Minds Matter, and sports-focused interventions like AMP .   Over the past 10 years, Mpower has played a pivotal role in normalizing conversations around mental well-being, reaching millions through its care delivery, prevention programs, and large-scale partnerships—continuing to enable individuals to seek support with dignity, confidence, and hope.   mpowerminds.com .
