Punjab Police busts two ISI-backed 2 modules in Amritsar, arrests 9 including 4 juveniles
Punjab Police has busted two Pakistan-based ISI-backed cross-border terror modules operating in Amritsar and arrested nine persons, including four juveniles, in a major operation aimed at dismantling terror networks in the border state. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the operation was carried out by the Amritsar Commissionerate Police, leading to the recovery of three illegal pistols, four petrol bottle bombs and nine live cartridges. In a post on X, the DGP said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were working at the behest of foreign-based handlers linked to Pakistans Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). According to Yadav, the handlers were attempting to recruit local youth to carry out terror-related activities, conduct surveillance of security installations, procure illegal weapons and create disturbances to public peace in Punjab. The investigation has also uncovered the installation of surveillance cameras near railway tracks, with the footage allegedly being shared with foreign handlers, the DGP said. Police have registered separate FIRs at Mohkampura, Airport and C-Division police stations in Amritsar. Further investigations are underway to identify other members of the ISI-backed network, establish its forward and backward linkages, trace the financial trail and ascertain whether those arrested were involved in any other terror-related activities. Reaffirming the forces commitment to tackling terrorism, DGP Yadav said Punjab Police remains steadfast in dismantling terror networks and safeguarding the peace, security and sovereignty of the state. Meanwhile, the Punjab Police has also launched an Anti-Gangster Helpline, seeking public cooperation in its ongoing crackdown against organised crime. In another post on X, the DGP appealed to citizens to share credible information about wanted gangsters, criminals and their associates directly with the police. He said information received through the helpline would help security agencies trace and apprehend fugitives more effectively. Assuring complete confidentiality, Yadav urged people to actively participate in the campaign, saying public support was crucial in strengthening law enforcement efforts against organised crime and anti-national elements in the state.

Actor Kanikka Kapur has responded to the comparisons with Kiara Advani that surfaced online after the makers of Batwara 1947 unveiled a poster featuring her alongside Karan Deol. While many social media users mistook Kanikka for Kiara, others even questioned whether the poster had been created using artificial intelligence. Speaking exclusively to Variety India, Kanikka said she is no longer bothered by such comparisons and is simply grateful to be part of the film. Kanikka Kapur has no problem with comparisons to Kiara Advani Reacting to the online discussion, Kanikka said she has seen mixed reactions from fans, with some believing she resembles Kiara Advani while others disagree: I am leaving it to the people to judge if they find me like Kiara (Advani). I have been reading mixed comments. Many people are convinced that I look like her in the poster, while some have said that I don't. The actor revealed, I have been compared to Kiara before as well. So, I am used to it now. Earlier, I would clarify whether it's her or me, but now I laugh it off. I am used to it, and I find her very pretty. So, I have no problem with the comparisons. Kanikka also clarified that she never discussed the social media chatter with anyone from the film's team: I did not discuss it with anyone and no one spoke to me about it. I am just happy to be on the poster. Kanikka also opened up about auditioning for Batwara 1947, admitting that knowing the scale of the project made the process more challenging. She recalled that, unlike some of her earlier auditions where she was unaware of the production house, she knew from the beginning that this was a major film directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. She said, Sometimes, you don't know what you are auditioning for, so cracking it becomes easier. When I was selected for Dono, I did not know I was auditioning for Rajshri Productions. For this film, I met Rajkumar Santoshi before my auditions. So, I knew about the project's scale. I did feel the pressure, but I gave it my best. She added, I had to work on my dialect. But since I belong to a Punjabi family that has witnessed the Partition, I have grown up with my grandparents who speak the dialect. Bonding with the cast Although most of her scenes are with Karan Deol, Kanikka said the cast spent time together during script readings and off-set interactions. Speaking about Preity Zinta, she shared: Most of my scenes were with Karan Deol. I would interact with the other cast members off-set during readings. Preity Zinta is very goofy and fun to be with. She is very chill. I love her vibe. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Batwara 1947 is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The film features music by A. R. Rahman with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, the period drama is scheduled to release in cinemas worldwide on August 14, 2026. Two Punjab residents chargesheeted in fake MES recruitment fraud case in J&K
Jammu, Aug 4: The Crime Branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has filed a chargesheet against two Punjab residents for their alleged involvement in a fake recruitment scam in the Military Engineering Services (MES), an official said on Tuesday. The scam came to light in 2023 after the accused allegedly duped two residents of J-K's Samba district of Rs 14 lakh by promising them jobs in the MES, a Jammu Crime Branch spokesperson said. He said the Special Crime Wing (SCW) of the Crime Branch Jammu filed the chargesheet against the accused -- Bakshish Singh of Amritsar and Amandeep Singh of Jalandhar -- in the court of the Additional Special Mobile Magistrate, Samba on Monday. The case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered in 2023 on the complaint of two residents of Samba who alleged that the accused induced them to pay Rs 14 lakhs on the false promise of securing MES jobs. While Bakshish was arrested from Amritsar after sustained efforts, the co-accused Amandeep remains absconding despite extensive raids and a lookout notice. Proceedings have been initiated for declaring him a proclaimed offender, the spokesman added. He mentioned that the victims were provided forged appointment letters and repeatedly sent to different locations, including Ranchi and Meerut, under the pretext of medical examinations, document verification and joining formalities. Subsequent verification from MES authorities confirmed that the appointment letters were fake and had never been issued by the department, the spokesman said. During the investigation, he said the SCW collected documentary, digital and financial evidence, including bank transaction records and forensic examination of questioned documents, which corroborated the allegations. The crime branch has advised the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent job rackets and to verify the authenticity of recruitment offers through official government channels before making any payment.
