Astropad Launches Rock Paper Pencil 4.0 With New Graphite Apple Pencil Tip

Astropad today launched Rock Paper Pencil 4.0 , an updated version of its screen protector and Apple Pencil tip combo made for the iPad . Rock Paper Pencil offers a paper-like writing experience on a tablet display by pairing a paper-textured screen protector with custom tips for the Apple Pencil. The new version of the product comes with two Apple Pencil tips, one with a smooth ballpoint feel and one that mimics a soft graphite pencil. Two of each tip come in the kit for four total. Astropad says the new graphite tip is meant to feel just like a 2B pencil with a soft, toothy drag that's ideal for sketching or shading. It even has the sound of a pencil on paper. The ballpoint tip is meant to feel like a smooth gel pen, and it's suited to writing and linework. The reusable screen protector remains the same as before, and users can put it on when writing or drawing on the iPad and take it off for other activities like gaming. It uses Astropad's NanoCling technology to attach, and it leaves no residue on the iPad's display because it doesn't use adhesive. The paper-like feel of the screen protector comes from a microscopic texture that adds a small amount of friction to improve control. When not in use, the screen protector can be kept in an included protective storage sleeve. Rock Paper Pencil is compatible with most iPads, with a list available on the website . The tips work with all Apple Pencil models, including the Apple Pencil Pro. Rock Paper Pencil 4.0 can be purchased from the Astropad website for $49.99. Astropad is also running a Peel It Off promo that offers $20 to people who switch to Rock Paper Pencil and share the removal of their old screen protector on social media. Meta Agrees to Limit Teens

Meta today said it will implement major changes to Facebook and Instagram's child safety features as part of a settlement agreement with almost all U.S. states. Here's what will change for users under 18 on Instagram and Facebook if the agreement is approved. Time Limit - Teens will have a two-hour daily time limit on Facebook and Instagram, though it can be overridden by a parent. The two-hour total includes both apps. Night Mode - Users will be blocked from posting and viewing content between midnight and 6 a.m. School Mode - Notifications are muted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Prompts - The apps will send prompts after every 15 minutes of continuous screen time. There will also be prompts when daily usage hits 60 minutes and 90 minutes. Feed Control - Teens can choose a non-algorithmic feed that does not include personalization through the Instagram and Facebook recommendation systems. Parents will be able to require this setting. Autoplay Control - Teens will be able to turn off autoplay. Parents can require this setting. Hidden Likes - Teens won't see the likes and reactions on a post by default. Filters - Cosmetic surgery and extreme makeup filters won't be accessible to teens. Age Assurance - Meta plans to strengthen tools it uses to catch accounts belonging to users under 13, as well as accounts used by teens aged 13 to 17 to make sure the accounts have experiences designed for teens. Parental Controls - Meta will add new controls for parents, notifying them if a teen links a second account or interacts with suspicious accounts. Parents will also get periodic updates on teen usage. Direct Messages - Direct messages are exempt from Time Limit, Night Mode , and School Mode. Meta will also pay approximately $18 billion to states to fund online youth safety initiatives, which is far less than its 2025 net income of $60.5 billion. The payment will be spread over a 10-year period, and Meta is withholding $5.3 billion unless TikTok and YouTube implement similar measures. If they do, Meta says it will lower daily usage limits from two cumulative hours across both apps to one hour for each app and expand Night Mode to run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Meta wants YouTube and TikTok to add a one-hour daily limit, night mode, and age assurance measures, as well as pay $5.3 billion each to match Meta's withheld $5.3 billion. Meta posted an open letter calling on TikTok and YouTube to implement the same measures. Teens with restrictions on Instagram and Facebook could instead just move over to TikTok and YouTube, and Meta likely doesn't want to be the only company losing out on revenue. Meta has been in a federal trial over the lawsuit, and had it continued, it could have been forced to pay more. California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey were seeking closer to $200 billion in civil penalties, according to Reuters . The settlement came before Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was set to testify, but Florida declined to settle and will continue litigation. New Mexico was also uninvolved because it won its own case against Meta earlier this year. Apple Wallet IDs: How to add your license (and where it actually works)

Macworld Apple added the capability to add digital state IDs or drivers licenses to Apple Wallet years ago, with the very first supporting states announced back in 2021 . Its a standards-based approach ( ISO 18013-5 ) that is meant to be more secure and private than physical identification, as well as finally closing one of the last loopholes that make people unable to leave the house without their wallet. If your state doesnt support drivers licenses in Wallet (or you dont have a drivers license), but you have an active passport, you can now add a Digital ID to your Apple Wallet . Updated August 26, 2026: Your Virginia Mobile ID can now be added to Apple Wallet. Add your drivers license or ID to Apple Wallet Adding your drivers license or ID to Apple Wallet is simple, just follow these steps: Open Wallet Tap the Add (+) button in the upper-right corner. Tap Drivers License or State ID and select your state. Now follow the on-screen instructions: First youll be asked if you want to add your ID to just your iPhone or your Apple Watch as well if you have a paired Apple Watch. Next you will be asked to take photos of your current ID, likely the front and back. You will then need to take some matching images of yourself. The phone will direct you to be in a well-lit area with a plain dark background and put your head in the frame. Then youll turn your head or make facial expressions (closing your eyes, opening your mouth) as directed by your phone. This information will be used to help match your appearance with your photo on record with the state. Think of it like a human making sure you look like the photo on your ID. Foundry States that support Apple Wallet ID This is the current status of which states support Apple Wallet ID and which may be coming soon. States that support Apple Wallet ID States that have announced future support Arizona Connecticut Arkansas Kentucky California Mississippi Colorado Oklahoma Georgia Utah Hawaii Illinois Iowa Maryland Montana New Mexico North Dakota Ohio Puerto Rico Virginia West Virginia Will the U.K. support Apple Wallet drivers licenses? The U.K. government has announced plans to launch a GOV.UK Wallet and App in which licenced drivers will be able to store a digital copy of their drivers licence. The new app is coming this summer and the ability to store digital drivers licences, later in 2025. The digital drivers licence will be piloted later in 2025, with plans to offer a digital alternative, alongside paper or card credentials, by the end of 2027. More here: U.K. iPhone users will soon be able to store digital licenses and IDs . Why add ID to Apple Wallet? Your ID in Apple Wallet is more secure than carrying around a physical card that could be lost or could reveal personal information to someone you may not wish to have it. Digital IDs in Apple Wallet do not display any personal information other than your name. If you tap the (i) button to get more info, and then tap Drivers License Info , your iPhone requires a Face ID or Touch ID login to see things like your address, date of birth, height, eye color, ID number, and so on. The transaction starts over NFC and negotiates a secure Bluetooth LE sessionno barcodes. So, you never have to hand your phone over to a police officer, TSA agent, or anyone else, and even if you do, they cant get your personal info without your authentication. Using your digital ID works a lot like Apple Pay. You hold your iPhone near the reader (which may be another iPhone), and a screen will pop up saying exactly which information youre going to share. Double-tap the side button to approve it, just like approving a payment. Currently, police agencies do not accept digital IDs as drivers licenses, so youll have to carry your physical card with you when you drive. Rather, the feature works at select TSA checkpoints ( see a map here ) and participating businesses or age-restricted venues. Whats more, apps that require age identification (like renting a car or ordering alcohol) can use the info stored in Wallet to provide proof of age. Whats nice about digital IDs is that they can transfer only the information needed, and nothing more. A bouncer who wants to check ID at the entrance to a venue would have a reader that shows your ID photo and simply confirms if youre over 21, for examplethey wouldnt get your actual date of birth, ID number, address, or any other info they dont need. The same goes for apps that need age verification. With the Apple Wallet implementation, nothing is transferred without your authentication, so not only do you not have to hand your phone over to anyone else, it wouldnt even help to do so. Why cant I add my drivers license? If you are in the U.S. it may be that your state doesnt yet support the feature. If your State is in the list above and you cant add your license it may be because of an Apple Server outage ( check that here ). If thats not the issue then Apple recommends contacting your issuing authority. If you are outside the U.S. its bad news. The ability to add ID and drivers licenses is likely unavailable where you are. Its not for Apple to implement the feature, but rather a decision on a country level. The U.K. government has announced plans for a digital version of the Driving Licence and other countries are likely to do the same.

iOS 27: 13 Ways the Messages App is Smarter and Less Annoying

The Messages app is arguably the most important app on the iPhone, and in iOS 27 , Apple is adding some useful improvements. There are some quality-of-life fixes for longtime issues, and new AI features. Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos. Contextual Suggestions Messages uses Apple Intelligence to surface one-tap suggestions based on what's being discussed in a conversation. If someone you're talking to asks you to send a photo, Messages recognizes the request and suggests adding the relevant photos. If someone invites you to an event, Messages offers to add it to your Calendar. If someone asks you to pick something up at the store, Messages will suggest adding it to your Reminders list or to the Notes app. Messages will also suggest Genmoji you might want to generate based on the conversation. Write With Siri There's a systemwide Write with Siri feature that's available in the Messages app. Siri AI can compose entire messages for you, proofread your messages, or give you feedback. There is a dedicated Write with Siri button above the keyboard where you can get to the new Siri tools. Smart Reply suggestions also use your writing style so they sound more natural. Siri AI Siri AI integrates with the Messages app. You can ask Siri to find images, videos, links, addresses, phone numbers, and more in the Messages app, plus Siri can draft message replies and act on info in the Messages app, like adding an event date to the Calendar app. Drawing You can use a new Drawing interface in the Messages app to send little sketches and notes. It's available when tapping on the + button next to the text bar in a conversation. The drawing interface is the same as the Markup tool available in apps like Photos and Notes. There's a marker, a pen, a highlighter, and an eraser, plus options to use the tools in any color. Accidental Recordings The iOS 27 Messages app includes an option to remove the audio button from the text bar. In the Messages section of the Settings app, you can navigate to Show in Text Field to set the right-side button to Record Audio, Start Dictation, or None. Setting the option to none will prevent you from accidentally recording a voice message with an errant tap. Tapbacks Messages now consolidates notifications for Tapback responses, which is useful when you're in a group thread and tons of people are sending emojis. Sending When a message fails to send in iOS 27, your iPhone will automatically retry sending it. In iOS 26 , you get an alert if a message fails, but you have to manually tap to try to send it again. The Messages app also supports continuous sending of photos, videos, and texts. If you're sending someone a photo and your connection is poor or you go offline, it automatically resumes sending when the connection is restored. Syncing Cross-device syncing is improved in iOS 27, so conversations will sync more reliably across the iPhone, iPad , Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. Fewer messages will fail to sync and display properly when you switch between devices. Messages, read states, reactions, and attachments sync faster. When you take a photo and then go to the Messages app to send it, you're more likely to see it right away. Apple says the iPhone is faster to add recent camera captures to Messages. Search Apple improved its search index across apps like Mail and Messages, so you're more likely to find what you're looking for. You can also search for conversations in Messages using a phone number or a contact's nickname. Offloaded Media If you have photos or videos that have been offloaded to save storage space, you can still find them in the iOS 27 Messages app when you search. Thumbnails are also displayed for offloaded media instead of a placeholder image, so you know what's there. RCS In RCS message conversations with Android users, you can now long press on a message to send an inline reply. iOS 27 also shows reaction emoji directly on images and videos, a feature that was not functioning in iOS 26. Genmoji Apple revamped Genmoji creation in iOS 27. There's an updated interface for describing an emoji that you want, with options to start from an existing emoji, choose an image from Photos, or select a person. After uploading an image or using a text phrase to create a Genmoji, there's a new Describe a change interface for making updates to what you've already created. You can iterate on designs and change individual elements of a Genmoji, tweaking colors and objects. Each change uses the old base instead of regenerating a new Genmoji. With a series of requests, it is possible to make a complicated, multi-element Genmoji. Along with describing changes, you can add in additional emoji, and the interface makes suggestions on what to do next. Genmoji output is more consistent, and Genmoji look more like real emoji with a 3D, cartoonish style by default. There is now an option to change style, so if you don't want the cartoonish look, you can ask for something else like a drawing or a sketch. Large Conversations Large conversations load and scroll faster in iOS 27, according to Apple. Read More More on all of the features in iOS 27 can be found in our iOS 27 guide . These are the new iPhone 18 Pro colors Apple will unveil September 9

Macworld Its iPhone leaks season again. On September 9 , Apple is expected to unveil three new phones: the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max , and a new foldable iPhone rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra. But as always, one of the most important questions for buyers will be: What colors will Apple release this time? Like last year , Macworld has received information from a source familiar with Apples supply chain regarding the color options for the iPhone 18 lineup. We can now reveal an inside look at the colors Apple is planning to release in September, along with our own renders to show what to expect. Dark Cherry is the hot new hue Every year, Apple introduces a new signature color for the iPhone Pro models. With the iPhone 17 Pro , the color that stood out the most was the vibrant Cosmic Orange . What about this years models? While other sources have previously reported on a Dark Red color, the information weve heard suggests that Apple has been working on a Dark Cherry option to serve as the headline new color for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Previously, Bloombergs Mark Gurman and other leakers had suggested that Apple has been experimenting with a shade of red for this years phones, but we can reveal the hue will be much closer to wine than fruit punch. While Dark Cherry color wont be as bright and striking as Cosmic Orange in person, it will still be unique enough to distinguish it as the new iPhone 18 Pro. As always, Apple is expected to discontinue the current lineup of colors, including Cosmic Orange. The iPhone 18 Pro could come in three all-new colors. Foundry Apple has also been reportedly experimenting with two other new color options for this years Pro lineup. One of them is Light Blue, which would resemble the current Mist Blue color of the base iPhone 17. The other color in development is a dark shade of gray. Finally, our source also reports on the existence of a silver variant of the iPhone 18 Pro, similar to the current generation. Once again, our source notes that the colors are all in development, but since the iPhone 18 Pro hasnt gone into mass production yet, Apple still has time to change them. Also, bear in mind that Apple doesnt always offer four color options for the Pro models, so one of these hues could be dropped. Last year, both Macworld and the reliable leaker Sonny Dickson reported that Apple had also considered launching the iPhone 17 Pro in black or steel gray. However, those color options never saw the light of day. Here are the Pantone color codes our says are being used internally by Apple: Light Blue (Pantone 2121) Dark Cherry (Pantone 6076) Dark Gray (Pantone 426C) Silver (Pantone 427C) We used these codes to generate the image above. Of course, colors may look a bit different in real life due to the material and lighting conditions. Since this report was published, weve seen real-world evidence of these colors, specifically the Dark Cherry hue , so were confident it will be among the options when the phone arrives in September. A very familiar design with minor changes Macworlds sources also had access to the CAD drawings of the new iPhones. These documents support the rumors that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will look very similar to their predecessors, with only minor changes. Most notably, the renders show a smaller Dynamic Island on the screen, which has been rumored to be one of the changes for this years models. This means the display will have more screen space for content when the Dynamic Island isnt showing Live Activities. The Dynamic Island could be smaller on the iPhone 18 Pro. Foundry Another interesting change noted by our source is that, in one of the renders, the gap between the glass cutout on the back and the camera bump is a bit smaller. Our source was unable to verify whether this is an old render, or if Apple is moving forward with a design change. Last year, a Weibo leaker known as Instant Digital reported that Apple would adopt a new process to minimize the color difference between the glass and the aluminum frame, so perhaps that change also involves reducing the gap between the glass and the camera bump at some point. More neutral colors for the foldable iPhone Weve also received details about the color options for the rumored foldable iPhone. The device, which will reportedly look like an iPad mini when unfolded, wont come in fun colors like the base iPhone and may have even fewer options than the iPhone Pro. For the foldable iPhone, Apple has been working on a classic silver and white model, as well as an Indigo option similar to the iPhone 17 Pros Deep Blue. The iPhone Fold will reportedly come in a dark Indigo option. Foundry The source also corroborates leaked CADs and renders showing the potential design of the foldable iPhone, which is expected to feature two rear cameras, a selfie camera on the outer display, and another selfie camera in the upper-left corner of the inner display. The schematics seen by our source reveal that the foldable iPhone will be just 4.7 millimeters thick when unfolded, making it significantly thinner than the 5.6mm iPhone Air. The iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone are all expected to launch in September, while our sources also report that the foldable model will hit stores at a later date . The base model of the iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e , and a new Air have been rumored to arrive in the first half of 2027, which has also been confirmed by our source.

Surprise and Shine! Apple

Macworld Apple has officially announced the date and time of its big September iPhone event: Wednesday, September 9, at 10 am PT. Thats a day later than its usual fall events because of the Labor Day holiday on Monday. The event invitations went out with an image of an Apple logo shining brightly like a sun in the sky along with the tagline Surprise and shine. The event will be streamed on apple.com , on the Apple TV app, and on the Apple YouTube channel . We will of course have full coverage right here on Macworld including a liveblog. Apples event invitations often contain some clue about what we expect them to announce, but its hard to imagine what this one could be referencing from the current rumors and leaks. Theres a bit of a new day angle with this being the first Apple Event under incoming CEO John Ternus, but we dont expect anything related to super-bright displays or anything that would obviously relate to this motif. The prevailing color is blue, which could be a reference to one of the new iPhone 18 Pro colors , and the overall brightness could reference the new camera system. And we obviously want a surprise, but Apple tries to make every new event full of surprises. Whatever it means, heres what we expect Apple to announce: iPhone 18 Pro / Max: With a similar design to the iPhone 17 Pro/Max, the next iteration of Pro phones will reportedly sport a new Dark Cherry color, a fast new A20 Pro chip, and a new main camera with a variable aperture. Learn more about the iPhone 18 Pro / Max . iPhone Ultra: The first folding iPhone is expected to be called iPhone Ultra. According to rumors, it will have an unusually wide passport size when folded and include the A20 Pro, two cameras (wide and telephoto), and use a new Touch ID button instead of Face ID, but its the software features and capabilities that will really make or break the new product, of which we know very little. The price is expected to be high at $2,000 or more. Learn more about what we expect fromt the iPhone Ultra . Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: Apple always launches a new Apple Watch together with the new iPhones. This year that should be the Series 12, and potentially the Ultra 4. We dont expect any big changes to either of thesethere will be minor chip improvements for better performance, but the latest rumors say not to expect major design changes or big new features like blood glucose monitoring this year. Learn more about Apple Watch Series 12 . Other surprises could show up Apple has multiple other products on the way soon that could make an appearance at this event, but arent necessarily expected. That includes a new Apple TV 4K and a new HomePod mini (both with chip updates that let them support the new Siri AI), as well as a totally new product: a smart home hub with a squarish 7-inch screen and a new operating system. Apple just revealed new M6 Mac mini and M5 Mac Studio products that ship later in September. But there are other Macs in the works, including an entry-level M6 MacBook Pro, a touchscreen MacBook Pro with a totally new design, and an M6 iMac with new colors, but we expect those to be bundled at an event later in the fall. Similarly, Apple is preparing AirPods with cameras . While AirPods are very often announced together with new iPhones, the rumor is that this model isnt expected to ship until 2027. However, Apple could use this event to announce AirPods 5, according to a rumor this wee k from Bloombergs Mark Gurman.

The iPhone event is September 9. The iPhone you want might not be there

Macworld Apples fall iPhone event has become one of the easiest product launches to predict. Every year since 2011, weve gotten the full lineup of new iPhones, joined in 2014 by the Apple Watch, and occasionally a related launch like AirPods or Apple Pay. We now know that the event will be held on Wednesday, September 9. However, according to strong rumors, this years keynote will be quite different from previous ones. While it will still be an Phone event , only the iPhone 18 Pro , iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumored foldable iPhone Ultra , are expected to be announced, along with the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. That means there will be a lot of disappointed Apple fans this year. Heres whats not comingand when to expect it to arrive. Dont expect the full iPhone 18 family For years, Apple has announced every flagship iPhone model at the same event in September. But that seems set to change this year as Apple both expands and shifts its iPhone lineup to welcome new models. Multiple reports suggest Apple is splitting its iPhone roadmap into two launch windows. Premium models, including the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra, are expected to debut this September. The standard iPhone 18 , however, is rumored to arrive several months later, likely alongside the spot usually reserved for the iPhone 18e. Screenshot Apple This would mark a major shift in Apples strategy and will make the September keynote much more of a Pro event than a simple iPhone event as we know it today. From Apples perspective, the move makes sense. Launching six phones at once inevitably means some products receive far less attention than others. Separating the lineup gives Apple two opportunities each year to dominate the smartphone conversation while also simplifying manufacturing and supply chain logistics. For buyers, though, it creates a different problem. If youre interested in Apples more affordable phones, the September keynote may not have much to offer. That means youll probably have to wait much longer to buy the phone you want. No iPhone Air 2 just yet Another notable omission from this years September keynote is likely to be the iPhone Air. Apple spent a lot of time talking about its new ultra-thin iPhone last year. This time, however, rumors suggest that we wont see a new Air alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and Ultra. Instead, Apple reportedly plans to keep the current iPhone Air on the market for a few more months before introducing a new iPhone Air in the spring with the 18 and 18e. Since this is the first update, this would put the Air on a slower update cycle, more similar to products like the iPad Pro, rather than the standard iPhone lineup, though its unclear whether the 3rd-gen model would arrive next spring or the following fall. A longer update cadence makes sense if you consider what the Air represents. Its less about chasing annual performance gains and more about offering a unique design for people who prioritize thinness above everything else. Also, according to multiple sources, Apple is still exploring ways to improve the iPhone Airs hardware in light of the models low sales figures. The Apple Watch SE 3 will likely stick around for another year. Chris Martin / Foundry The next Apple Watch SE skips another year Another Apple product that doesnt follow a regular update cycle is the Apple Watch SE . Last year, Apple updated its most affordable smartwatch with the latest chip and an always-on display, while keeping the same Series 4-based design introduced with the original Apple Watch SE in 2020. Those waiting for a new version of the Apple Watch SE will likely have to wait another year, as there are no rumors of a new SE model coming out this fall. Thats not a surprise, as Apple has never updated the Apple Watch SE in back-to-back years. At $249, the Apple Watch SE is still an easy recommendation for first-time Apple Watch buyers, but its becoming increasingly hard to ignore just how outdated it looks compared to the flagship models. Exciting announcements coming this fall Although it may seem that this years September event might feature fewer products than usual, its still shaping up to be the most exciting iPhone event in years. Apple is reportedly preparing its biggest iPhone shake-up in years with the debut of the foldable iPhone Ultra, while the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to introduce new camera hardware and other refinements. There are also expected to be a new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, as well as new Siri AI features reserved for the new devices. Apple is likely launching is first folding phone in September. Foundry There could be some surprises too. A recent leak revealed that Apple is preparing to introduce new AirPods models at the iPhone event, including an entirely new version with built-in cameras to enable AI features. Apple could also use the event to launch its long-rumored smart home push , including the so-called HomePad home hub as well as a new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini. Finally, Apple is also working on a new iPad mini with an OLED display and a faster chip, as well as an Apple Intelligence update to the entry-level iPad, either of which could make an appearance at the September event. But if youve been holding out for an iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, iPhone Air 2, or a new Apple Watch SE, you may need to keep waiting just a little longer. Thats becoming the new normal for Apple: Fewer products per keynote, but more launches spread throughout the year.

1-800-APL-CARE Now Connects You With AI Assistant Instead of Human

If you dial Apple Support's phone number 1-800-APL-CARE from the U.S. or Canada, there is a good chance that an AI-powered support assistant will now answer. While many of Apple's phone systems already had a basic automated operator, the Apple Support phone line is now using a voice powered by generative AI. The assistant can answer questions and troubleshoot issues with your Apple products, with it able to provide detailed step-by-step instructions. The assistant can still transfer you to a human advisor if it cannot answer a specific question, or if you ask to speak to a real person. An anonymous tipster claimed that Apple has partnered with Sierra AI on the virtual assistant, but we have not independently confirmed this information. A concern is that Apple's increasing use of AI for customer service may result in a reduction in human advisors, through fewer job listings and/or layoffs. It appears that the AI assistant for Apple Support phone calls went live earlier this year. Apple has also been testing a new AI-powered chatbot in its Apple Support app , through a new Ask tab that has rolled out to a limited number of users. Leaked Images Give First Look at Apple

Images claiming to show the inside of an Apple-made AI server, believed to power Private Cloud Compute, surfaced online this week, offering a first look at how the hardware is laid out. The images were shared earlier this week by the X user @hsuchingpo , an account with a track record of Apple hardware and prototype leaks. Captioned simply Apple M5 Server, the leaker said the hardware is most likely Apple's Private Cloud Compute (PCC) system. Private Cloud Compute is Apple's system for offloading demanding Apple Intelligence requests from a device to the cloud while keeping user data from being stored or shared. The images show a rack mountable chassis packed with compute modules. Each one has a separate circuit board mounted on a carrier bar and secured with blue and red ejector latches for quick removal. The boards connect into a backplane through gold edge connectors, with heatsinks running through the center of each column and a service diagram taped inside the lid mapping out numbered board positions and Apple part numbers. M5 #apple pic.twitter.com/BJE4W0qPWF (@hsuchingpo) August 24, 2026 Each single chassis holds up to 32 boards. The layout appears to be built around airflow, with heatsinks running down the center and fans at both ends. One close-up image shows a board with its thermal paste wiped away, revealing an Apple logo printed directly onto a chip package, appearing to confirm the hardware uses Apple's own silicon. Two NAND flash chips sit nearby. The leaker added that the server cannot manage its own workload independently. In replies, they explained that the hardware equires use in conjunction with Mac Studio (serves the function of software control) and apart from Apple , no one can activate it, since doing so needs both a physical control machine and a control account. Apple produces AI servers domestically at a facility in Houston, Texas , as part of a $600 billion U.S. investment commitment. iPhone 17 Remains World

The iPhone 17 retained its position as the world's best selling smartphone in the second quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint Research , with the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro holding the next two spots on the firm's quarterly ranking. Data from Counterpoint's Global Handset Model Sales Tracker places the standard iPhone 17 at 6% of global smartphone unit sales for the second quarter, building on the top spot it already held in the first quarter. Apple and Samsung filled all ten of the top spots, with a combined 26% share of worldwide unit sales that was two points higher than a year earlier. Counterpoint tied the growth to regional strength outside Apple's usual core markets, with gains in India, Japan, and the Middle East and Africa, plus a near doubling of sales in South Korea. The base iPhone 17 model remained the best selling smartphone during the quarter, supported by significant upgrades that narrowed the gap with the Pro models. Meanwhile, strong premium demand drove the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max sales, aided by trade in programs, promotions, and accessible financing options that improved affordability. Rising smartphone prices across the industry also nudged buyers toward more expensive pricing tiers generally, which largely worked in Apple's favor given its lineup skews upmarket already. The iPhone 17e took seventh place following its refresh that added MagSafe and increased storage for the same price, boosted by compelling carrier deals in the U.S. and Japan. The iPhone 16 rounded out the list at number ten, leaving Apple with five of the ten slots, which is the same count and nearly the same positions Apple held a year earlier with the iPhone 16 lineup and iPhone 15. Samsung's best performer was the Galaxy S26 Ultra in fourth place, which is the first time that Samsung's top tier device has outsold every other Android phone in the second quarter. This is said to partly be a reflection of Samsung steering more marketing spend toward its flagship models to protect margins as costs climb. Samsung's cheaper Galaxy A phones also remained competitive further down the market. Overall, the smartphone market shrank 11% in the quarter, a contraction Counterpoint links to the ongoing shortages and price rises that has manufacturers concentrating resources on their most profitable phones. Apple and Samsung both grew unit sales against that backdrop, a divergence that is visible in Counterpoint's regional data as well. Apple M5, 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports: $1,299/1,299. Apple M5, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports: $1,399/1,399. Additional options: Up to 32GB memory, 4TB storage. What are display specifications? While referred to as 13-inch, when measured diagonally the screen is 13.6-inches. The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina on the M5 MacBook Air display has a native resolution of 2,5601,664 and 500 nits brightness. The MacBook Air M5 can support two external displays. How do I connect stuff? The M5 MacBook Air models supports Thunderbolt 4, which means that they can support a dual monitor set up . If you want to connect USB-A devices, you need either a USB-C to USB-A adapter, like Apples $19 / 19 one, or a USB-C hub that has USB-A ports. In the U.K. and Europe Apple has stopped including a Power Adapter in the box, so you will need to buy one separately. See our round-up of the best USB-C hubs and adapters . The 2026 MacBook Air offers Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) for connecting to a network. It also provides built-in Bluetooth (6) for wirelessly connecting a mouse or other peripherals. If you want to connect to an ethernet network, you need an adapter. How fast is it? In our tests the M5 saw consistent gains over the M4 in the previous generation, as you can see in our Mac processor benchmarks . In some benchmarks the M3 even beats the M1 Ultra. If you are upgrading from an old Mac especially if it is one with an Intel chip you will see a huge difference. Any other considerations? The MacBook Air should be more than fast enough for general-purpose use. The only issue is that, because it doesnt have an internal fan, it may slow down during long processing sessions to keep cool. So if you are likely to be video editing or compiling code the MacBook Pro with its fan is a better choice. Also note that its impossible to upgrade the storage or memory after purchase, so you should buy the model with the largest amount of storage and memory you can afford or invest in external storage. Why we recommend the 13-inch MacBook Air: The MacBook Air is a great choice for someone who does general-purpose work and moves around a lot, such as a student or a self-employed person. We compare the MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro separately. The MacBook Neo is Apples new entry-level Mac laptop. Its powered by an iPhone-class chip (the A18 Pro) rather than an M-series processor, and it introduces a colorful design and a simplified feature set at a much lower starting price, although not as low as it was, thanks to Apples June 2026 price hikes which pushed prices up $100. Whos it for? The MacBook Neo is designed to appeal to students and those who want to use a laptop for everyday tasks like web browsing, video calls, schoolwork, streaming, email and office apps. Because it uses an A18 Pro iPhone chip and is limited to 8GB of non-upgradable RAM, it is not suitable for heavy video editing or large-scale photo processing. How much does the MacBook Neo cost? At launch the MacBook Neo was the the cheapest Mac laptop Apple has ever released, starting at $599/599. That price is now slightly more, at $699/699, but its still about half the price of a MacBook Air. What are the specifications? The MacBook Neo is the first Mac to use an A-series processor, the same family used in iPhones. That chip has a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, 8GB unified memory, and either 256GB or 512GB storage. Apple A18 Pro, 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, 8GB memory, 256GB SSD, two USB-C ports: $699/699. Apple A18 Pro, 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, 8GB memory, 512GB SSD, two USB-C ports: $799/799. Additional options: None. What are display specifications? The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with 2,4081,506 resolution at 220 ppi, at up to 500 nits and sRGB color. That should be good enough for everyday work. How do I connect stuff? Connectivity is basic. There are two USB-C ports; one is USB 3, the other is slower USB 2. There isnt a separate MagSafe port so charging is via USB-C. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6 are included. How fast is it? MacBook Neo uses the A18 Pro chip that first appeared in the iPhone 16 Pro. Our tests and benchmarks of that chip indicate that it offers similar performance to the M1. It is suitable for everyday tasks like web browsing, streaming, and office apps. Any other considerations? To get to the low price Apple has made several trade-offs. The MacBook Neo lacks Thunderbolt and MagSafe support, there is no keyboard backlight and no Touch ID on the base model, and RAM is limited to 8GB with no option to increase that to 16GB. Why we recommend the MacBook Neo : This is the most affordable way to own a Mac laptop unless you buy a used or refurbished model. If you dont need pro-level performance its a very compelling entry-point into Apples ecosystem. The 15-inch MacBook Air is essentially identical to the 13-inch model above aside from the bigger screen and six-speaker system rather than four speakers. Surprisingly, battery life isnt better on the 15-inch, despite the bigger battery. Whats new? The M5 MacBook Air arrived in March 2026. Like the 13-inch version it features the M5 chip for faster CPU and GPU performance compared to the previous generation. The base configuration now starts with 512GB of storage (double the previous model), along with faster SSD speeds, more memory bandwidth, and support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Whos it for? The 15-inch MacBook Air is ideal for anyone who wants a big-screen laptop for far less than the price of a 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro. The big screen will allow more room for spreadsheets and browser tabs, and for multitasking with multiple apps open. Its also great choice for anyone who values portability due to its lightweight and thin design. How much does the 15-inch MacBook Air cost? The price of the 15-inch model was $1,299/1,299, but following the June 2026 price increases it now starts at $1,499/1,499. There are three configurations and you can create build-to-order models with up to 32GB memory and 2TB storage. What are the specifications? The specifications of the 15-inch M5 MacBook Air are generally the same as the 13-inch model, expect there is no 8-core GPU option here. The actual screen measurements, measured diagonally are 15.3in. You are essentially paying $200/200 more for the bigger screen. Apple M5, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports: $1,499/1,499. Additional options: Up to 32GB memory, 4TB storage. What are display specifications? While referred to as 15-inch, when measured diagonally the screen is 15.3-inches. The 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display has a native resolution of 2,8801,864 and 500 nits brightness. The MacBook Air M5 can support two external displays. How do I connect stuff? Both M5 MacBook Air models support Thunderbolt 4 and can support a dual monitor set up . For USB-A devices you need a USB-C to USB adapter (Apple sells one for $19 / 19 ), or a USB-C hub with USB-A ports. In the U.K. and Europe Apple has stopped including a Power Adapter in the box, so you will need to buy one separately. See our round-up of the best USB-C hubs and adapters . The 2026 MacBook Air offers the new standards of Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and Bluetooth (6). If you want to connect to an ethernet network, you need an adapter. How fast is it? This is the same M5 as found in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, so you can expect similar performance. In our tests we found the M5 to be faster than the M1 Ultra in some benchmarks. If you are updating from an older Mac expect a big boost. Any other considerations? The Air doesnt have a fan to keep the computer cool, so it may throttle down its speed during long processing sessions, such as video editing or compiling code. If thats the kind of work you intend to do, a MacBook Pro would be a better option. Also note that you wont be able to update RAM or storage later, so get as much as you can afford. Why we recommend the 15-inch MacBook Air: Starting at $1,499/1,499, the 15-inch MacBook Air is a much more affordable Mac laptop than the 14-inch MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,999/1,999, so if you want your screen to be bigger than 13 inches, and you dont need the power of a MacBook Pro for the kind of work you do, the 15-inch MacBook Air is a great option. There are three distinct types of MacBook Pro, the M5 model discussed here, and the M5 Pro and M5 Max models we look at separately. Like its more powerful siblings, the M5 MacBook Pro has an HDR ProMotion display, which the MacBook Air lacks. The MacBook Pro offers more ports than the MacBook Air: HDMI and SDXC slots. The 14-inch MacBook Pro offers 24 hour battery life which, along with the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro chip, is the best battery life ever on a MacBook. Whats new? In October 2025 Apple updated the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip. There were no other major changes, aside from the new option to add 4TB storage at point of sale. Bigger changes came with the launch of the M4 MacBook Pro in October 2024, back then we saw RAM increase from 8GB to 16GB as standard, camera improvements, and Thunderbolt 4 support. Whos it for? The 14-inch MacBook Pro is for a more demanding user than the MacBook Air. Its main benefit is the design allows for better cooling, which means that if you push the machine it wont slow down to avoid overheating. However, there are other MacBook Pros available from Apple (including a 16-inch model) that offer faster processors, so if you really need a powerful machine one of those might be more suitablewe discuss the M5 Pro and M5 Max models below. How much does the 14-inch MacBook Pro cost? The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 starts at $1,999/1,999 (up from the $1,699/1,699 it cost in March 2026 (even that was an increase compared to the $1,599/1,599 it cost at launch in October 2025). What are the specifications? The standard specs for the 14-inch MacBook Pro offer an improvement on the previous generation. The MacBook Pro now ships with 1TB SSD as standard, up from 512GB. Apple M5, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, 1TB SSD, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, SDXC, HDMI, $1,999/1,999. Additional options: 32GB memory; up to 4TB storage. What are display specifications? Apple refers to it as a 14-inch screen, but the screen measured diagonally is actually 14.2-inches. The 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display has a native resolution of 3,0241,964 and 1,000 nits brightness, 1600 nits peak, 600 nits SDR brightness, and ProMotion for adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. The notch at the top of the display conceals the 12MP FaceTime camera which now features Centre Stage. How do I connect stuff? There are three Thunderbolt 4 ports. These are compatible with USB-C (if you have wired devices that arent USB-C, youll need an adapter, we have a separate MacBook Pro Thunderbolt adapter guide to help you decide which ones youll need). The 14-inch MacBook Pro also comes with an HDMI port for connecting an external display or projector, and an SDXC Card slot for plugging in memory cards from cameras, audio recorders, and other devices. The HDMI port also supports multichannel audio output. The 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro still has the older Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity (the other MacBook Pro models and Air have been updated to the newer standards. In the U.K. and Europe Apple has stopped including a Power Adapter in the box, so you will need to buy one separately. How fast is it? Apple described the M5 chip in the MacBook Pro as offering a big leap in AI performance thanks to a Neural Accelerator in each core. It also offers 4x better graphics performance compared to the M4, according to Apple. In some of our tests the M5 beat the M1 Ultra, which shows the progress Apple has made with its silicon over the past few years. The MacBook Air matches the specs of the M5 MacBook Pro, but the Pro outperforms the Air due to the inclusion of a fan for cooling (the MacBook Air doesnt have the space for this). If you need it, more power is available from the MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or Max. Any other considerations? Our advice is to max out the RAM (aka Unified Memory) and storage when you buy a Mac because you cant update it later on. Why we recommend the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5): The 14-inch MacBook Pro costs $1,999/1,999, which is much more than the 13-inch MacBook Air at $1,299/1,299. However the $700/700 difference is misleading: when comparing like for like: the 15-inch MacBook Air with 1TB SSD costs $1,799/1,799, which is $200/200 less than the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the same 1TB SSD. For that extra $200 you get a bigger screen on a machine that is better suited to processor intensive work. The Pro and Max MacBook Pro can support up to 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB memory and 8TB storage, for a seriously fast Mac laptop. Theres a larger 16-inch MacBook Pro with similar specs that we discuss below. Whats new? The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max was introduced in March 2026 and introduces Apples new Fusion Architecture chip that combines two 3nm CPU and GPU dies into a single unified system on a chip, which lets Apple scale performance and efficiency. In addition, the GPU includes a Neural Accelerator in every core, which Apple claims delivers up to 4x the AI performance of the previous generation. There is also faster memory and faster SSD speeds. Whos it for? If your work demands serious processing power, these machines are built to handle it. If you regularly work in professional software, the 14-inch MacBook Pro is a strong choice, and with either the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip theyre the most powerful laptops Apple has ever made. The 14-inch model costs less than the 16-inch version, making it the more budget-friendly option, and if you use an external monitor the screen size matters less. The M5 Pro MacBook Pro is designed for demanding professional tasks like software development, managing large photo libraries, or editing 4K video, while the M5 Max is aimed at even heavier workflows such as 3D animation, complex simulations, AI development, and high-end video production. How much does the 14-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Pro & Max cost? The price now starts at $2,499/2,499 (up from $2,199/2,199) for the M5 Pro. The M5 Max version starts at $4,099/4,099, up from $3,599/3,599 prior to June 2026, and a gigantic leap from the previous generation starting price of $3,199/3,199 (that M4 Max model came with 1TB SSD rather than 2TB). What are the specifications? Here are the standard configurations for the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Apple M5 Pro, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, 1TB SSD, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, SDXC, HDMI, $2,499/2,499. Apple M5 Max, 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 48GB memory, 2TB SSD, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, SDXC, HDMI, $4,699/4,699. Additional options: 128GB memory; up to 8TB storage, Nano-texture display. What are display specifications? Apple refers to it as a 14-inch screen, but the screen measures 14.2-inches. The 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display hasnt changed from its native resolution of 3,0241,964, 254 pixels per inch, 1,600 nits of maximum brightness and 1,000 nits for HDR content, but it now offers 1000 nits for standard content, up from 600. Youll also get a 1,000,000-to-1 contrast ratio and ProMotion support with a refresh rate up to 120Hz. The notch at the top of the display conceals the 12MP Center Stage camera with support for Desk View and 1080p HD video recording. The notch does not affect the available screen areathe work area is a 16-by-10 space, while the screen surrounding the notch is considered extra space and is used to display the menu bar. How do I connect stuff? Unlike the M5 model, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and Max offers Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and Bluetooth 6 for wireless connectivity. There are three Thunderbolt 5/USB C ports, an SDXC slot for plugging in memory cards from cameras, audio recorders, and other devices, and an HDMI port for connecting an external display or projector (the HDMI port supports multichannel audio output). In the U.K. and Europe Apple has stopped including a Power Adapter in the box, so you will need to buy one separately. How fast is it? Apple built the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with pro users in mind and it shows in the performance. With the M5 Pro and M5 Max you can enjoy the fastest Mac laptops Apple has ever made. When it comes to graphics prowess the Max will always beat the Pro, so if you need the fastest then youll want the M5 Max. Any other considerations? The MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro chips cost significantly more than other Macs, and the Max version costs even more, so you should consider whether the extra performance will actually benefit your workflow. Why we recommend the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro or M5 Max): If you want a laptop that can handle any task you throw at itand you dont have a constraining budgetyou want a MacBook Pro. The only reason not to buy the 14-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro would be if you saw a good deal on the discontinued M4 Pro/M4 Max version, just remember that that there was less storage in those model (512GB rather than 1GB at the entry-level). 16-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro/M5 Max, 2026) Spacious display for demanding workflows Price When Reviewed: 4,399 (was 3,899) Best Prices Today: Retailer Price $3,999 View Deal $3999 View Deal $4124.65 View Deal $4199 View Deal $4399 View Deal $4399 View Deal Price comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwide View more prices What is it? This design allows Apple to scale both performance and efficiency. The GPU also includes a Neural Accelerator in every core, which Apple says means it can deliver up to four times the AI performance of the previous generation. There is also faster memory and improved SSD speeds compared to the previous generation. Whos it for? This is Apples largest pro laptop and its designed for people who need a portable Mac to do work that demands extreme processing power. You could save some money with the 14-inch MacBook Pro, but if you need a big screen on your laptop this is the Mac for you. Youll also benefit from longer battery life. Configured with the M5 Max this is the fastest and most powerful laptop Apple has ever created. How much does the 16-inch MacBook Pro cost? There are four standard configurations starting at $2,999/2,999 (up from $2,699/2,699, which was already $200/200 more than the previous generation, although with double the storage). These laptops also come with an HDMI 2.0 port for connecting an external display or projector, and an SDXC Card slot for plugging in memory cards from cameras, audio recorders, and other devices. The HDMI port supports multichannel audio output. In the U.K. and Europe Apple has stopped including a Power Adapter in the box, so you will need to buy one separately. How fast is it? The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are both built for pro users the 16-inch MacBook Pro doesnt get any faster or more powerful options than the 14-inch model, but you will benefit from better battery life. The arrival of the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips make these the fastest Mac laptops Apple has ever made 30% faster performance and stronger AI and graphics capabilities than the M4 generation, according to Apple. When it comes to graphics prowess the Max will always beat the Pro, so if you need the fastest then youll want the M5 Max. Any other considerations? Apple has increased prices for this generation of MacBook Pro, compared to the predecessors, which makes what are already high-priced Mac laptops even more expensive. While this is partly explained by the inclusion of twice as much storage (now 2TB as standard) shoppers will want to consider whether they really need the extra performance. Look out for deals on the discontinued M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro models, but note that the older models will have less storage. Why we recommend the 16-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro or M5 Max): The 16-inch MacBook Pro offers the largest display and longest battery life in Apples laptop lineup. The M6 Mac mini is Apples smallest and most affordable desktop Mac. It has the same compact 55-inch design introduced with the M4 Mac mini in 2024, but the M6 replaces the M4 chip inside. Unlike an iMac, the Mac mini doesnt include a display, keyboard or mouse, so it is particularly attractive if you already own those things. There is also a more powerful Mac mini with an M5 Pro chip, which we discuss separately. Whats new ? Apple updated the Mac mini with the M6 chip in August 2026, although the new model doesnt go on sale until September 22. The design hasnt changed, but there are some significant improvements inside. The M6 has a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, up from 10 CPU and GPU cores in the M4, along with Neural Accelerators in every GPU core and Apples first Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Maximum unified memory increases from 24GB to 32GB and memory bandwidth rises from 120GB/s on the M4 to as much as 170GB/s. Apple also says storage is up to twice as fast. Connectivity has been upgraded with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard. Whos it for? The M6 Mac mini is a good choice for anyone who wants a powerful desktop Mac but doesnt need the additional performance of the M5 Pro Mac mini or Mac Studio. It has more than enough power for everyday work, web browsing and office apps, but is also capable of photo and video editing, coding and gaming. Apple is particularly pushing the M6 Mac mini for AI workloads, including running local AI models and AI agents. If your work involves demanding video production, 3D rendering, large AI models or other processor-intensive professional workflows, the M5 Pro version will be a better choice. How much does the Mac mini cost? The M6 Mac mini starts at $899/899 with 16GB unified memory and a 256GB SSD. Thats $100/100 more than the M4 Mac mini cost immediately before it was replaced, and $300/300 more than the M4 models original $599/599 launch price in October 2024. A 16GB model with 512GB storage costs $1,199/1,199. There is also an M6 configuration with 24GB memory and 512GB storage, while additional memory and storage upgrades can be selected when you order. What are the specifications? Apple M6, 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 16GB memory, 256GB SSD, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, 2 USB-C, HDMI, 2.5Gb Ethernet, $899/899. Additional options: 24GB or 32GB unified memory; up to 2TB SSD, and 10Gb Ethernet The Mac mini does not include a display, keyboard, or mouse, so youll have to provide your own, or you can customize your order to include these devices as extra-cost options. How do I connect stuff? There are two USB-C ports on the front of the Mac mini, supporting USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s, alongside a 3.5mm headphone jack. On the back are three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports capable of speeds up to 40Gb/s, an HDMI port and a 2.5Gb Ethernet port. The Ethernet connection can be upgraded to 10Gb when you order. Wireless connectivity has also been upgraded to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and the Mac mini includes Thread networking support. The M6 model can drive as many as three displays , including two 6K screens and a third 5K display. Unlike some older Mac mini models, there are no USB-A ports, so youll need an adapter or hub for older USB accessories. How fast is it? Apple says the M6 delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance and twice the graphics performance of the M4. For everyday use, the M6 Mac mini is more powerful than most people will need. It is more than capable of photo and video editing, coding, gaming, and demanding creative and AI workloads. However, if you regularly work with heavy 3D rendering, high-end video production, or large local AI models, the M5 Pro Mac mini will be faster and better suited to sustained workloads. Any other considerations? As with other current Macs, the unified memory and internal SSD cant be upgraded after purchase, so think carefully about how much memory and storage youll need before you order. The 256GB SSD is likely to feel restrictive if you store lots of photos, video or large applications and wed consider 24GB memory if you want to run more demanding creative or AI workloads. If you need more memory, Thunderbolt 5, or better performance look at the M5 Pro Mac mini instead. Why we recommend the Mac mini M6: Though not as affordable as it once was, the Mac mini is an appealing way to get a powerful Mac if you already own a display, keyboard and mouse. Its combination of a tiny footprint, extensive connectivity and enough performance for everything from everyday work to photo and video editing makes it one of Apples most versatile Macs. The M5 Pro Mac mini is the more powerful of the two Mac mini models introduced in August 2026. It uses the same compact five-by-five-inch design as the M6 Mac mini (and the predesessor), but substitutes the more powerful M5 Pro chip and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. Despite the apparently older chip name, M5 Pro is significantly more capable than M6 for demanding professional workloads, with more CPU and GPU cores, greater memory bandwidth, support for up to 64GB of unified memory, and support for three 6K displays. Whats new ? The higher-end Mac mini moved from M4 Pro to M5 Pro in August 2026, with availability from September 22. It now offers up to an 18-core CPU, 64GB unified memory and 307GB/s memory bandwidth, plus Neural Accelerators in every GPU core. Connectivity improves with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and standard 2.5Gb Ethernet, while genlock over USB-C supports professional video workflows. Whos it for? The M5 Pro Mac mini is for developers, video editors, 3D artists, musicians, researchers and other creative or technical professionals who need more processing and graphics power than the standard Mac mini offers, but dont need to step up to a Mac Studio. Its particularly well suited to running larger local AI models thanks to its 307GB/s memory bandwidth and support for up to 64GB of unified memory. Apple also highlights app development, video rendering, scientific simulations, 3D design, VFX and game development as suitable workloads. For ordinary office work, web browsing, photo editing and less demanding creative work, the M6 Mac mini should be more than sufficient and costs considerably less. How much does the Mac mini cost? The M5 Pro Mac mini starts at $1,699/1,699 with 24GB unified memory and a 512GB SSD. Thats $100/100 more than the M4 Pro model cost following Apples June 2026 price increase, and $300/300 more than the M4 Pro Mac minis original $1,399/1,399 launch price. What are the specifications? Apple sells three Mac mini models. Apple M5 Pro, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, 512GB SSD, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, 2 USB-C, HDMI, 2.5Gb Ethernet, $1,699/1,699) Additional options: M5 Pro with 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU; 48GB or 64GB unified memory; up to 8TB SSD, and 10Gb Ethernet The Mac mini does not include a display, keyboard, or mouse, so youll have to provide your own, or you can customize your order to include these devices as extra-cost options. How do I connect stuff? The M5 Pro Mac mini has two USB-C/USB 3 ports and a headphone jack on the front. On the back are three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI and Ethernet. Thunderbolt 5 offers transfer speeds up to 120Gbps and can also be used for display, storage, docks and other high-performance peripherals. It can drive up to three 6K displays . Wireless connectivity is Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while wired networking is now 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, with 10Gb Ethernet available as an option. Apple has also introduced genlock over USB-C, which will be useful in professional video setups where cameras and displays need to be synchronized. How fast is it? The M5 Pro offers up to an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU and 307GB/s memory bandwidth, versus the M6s 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU and 170GB/s. That makes M5 Pro better suited to demanding video, 3D, development and local Al workloads. Apple claims the M5 Pro Mac mini offers up to 4x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio, 1.4x faster ray-traced rendering in Blender, and 1.5x faster image processing in Affinity compared to the M4 Pro Mac mini. Any other considerations? Memory and storage cant be upgraded later, so choose carefully; for demanding work, extra unified memory is worth prioritising. Youll also need your own display, keyboard and mouse. The M6 Mac mini is cheaper and powerful enough for most users, while those needing substantially more performance should consider the Mac Studio. Why we recommend the Mac mini (M6): Its not as affordable as it once was, but the M5 Pro Mac mini packs impressive professional-level performance into an exceptionally small desktop. Compared with the M6 model, it offers more CPU and GPU cores, almost twice the memory bandwidth, up to 64GB unified memory, Thunderbolt 5, and support for three 6K displays. For developers, video editors, 3D artists, and demanding AI workloads, its a good middle ground between the standard Mac mini and the more expensive Mac Studio. The Mac Studio with M5 Max is Apples high-performance compact desktop for professional users. It between the Mac mini with M5 Pro and the more expensive M5 Ultra version of the Mac Studio. It doesnt come with a display, keyboard or mouse, but its small desktop design packs in considerably more sustained performance and connectivity than Apples laptops. The M5 Max version supports up to 128GB of unified memory and five external displays. Whats new? Apple updated the Mac Studio in August 2026, replacing the M4 Max chip in the model introduced in March 2025 with the M5 Max. The design hasnt changed, but there are significant upgrades inside. The M5 Max has an 18-core CPU and up to 40-core GPU, with Neural Accelerators built into every GPU core for much faster AI processing. Memory bandwidth increases to as much as 614GB/s, storage is up to twice as fast, and the Mac Studio gains Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Apple has also added support for genlock over USB-C and Thunderbolt 5 clustering, which allows multiple Mac Studios to work together on distributed AI workloads. Whos it for? The Mac Studio with M5 Max is aimed at creative and technical professionals who need more performance than a Mac mini can provide, but dont need the extreme power or price of the M5 Ultra. Apple specifically highlights musicians, photographers, software developers, engineers and designers working with 3D and motion graphics. Its also a strong choice for video editing, software development, AI image and video generation, and running large language models locally. If your work involves exceptionally large AI models, complex VFX simulations or huge quantities of 8K video, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio may be more appropriate. How much does the Mac Studio cost? The M5 Max Mac Studio starts at $2,499/2,499. That gets you the M5 Max with an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB unified memory and 512GB SSD. The starting price hasnt changed from the price Apple introduced in June 2026, but it is substantially higher than the previous models original launch price: the M4 Max Mac Studio started at $1,999/2,099 when it arrived in March 2025. What are the specifications? The entry-level M5 Max Mac Studio offers: Apple M5 Max, 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, $2,499/2,499. Additional options: M5 Max SoC with a 18-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU; up to 128GB unified memory; up to 8TB SSD storage. The memory bandwidth of the M5 Max is 614GB compared to 546GB/s for the M4 Max model. How do I connect stuff? The M5 Max Mac Studio has the following ports: Four Thunderbolt 5 ports on the back supporting speeds of up to 120Gb/s. Two USB-C ports on the front (these are Thunderbolt on the M5 Ultra model). SDXC Card slot on the front. Two USB-A ports. 10Gb ethernet. HDMI. 3.5 mm headphone jack Wi-Fi 7. Bluetooth 6. The M5 Max supports up to five external displays. The Mac Studio doesnt include a display, keyboard or mouse, so youll need to provide your own or add Apples as extra-cost options. How fast is it? The M5 Max Mac Studio is significantly faster than the previous M4 Max model, with some of the biggest improvements coming in AI workloads. Apple says LLM prompt processing in LM Studio can be up to 3.9x faster than M4 Max, while text-to-image generation can be up to 3.5x faster. Magic Mask processing in DaVinci Resolve Studio is up to 3x faster, while Redshift scene rendering is up to 1.4x faster. Apple also says the new GPU can be up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation for graphics-intensive work. The 18-core CPU is also faster than the M4 Max and memory bandwidth rises to 614GB/s. The M5 Max can simultaneously play as many as 19 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30fps. The Mac Studios active cooling also means it is designed to maintain this level of performance during long, intensive workloads. Any other considerations? The M5 Max is an extremely powerful chip if you dont regularly perform processor-, graphics- or AI-intensive work, a Mac mini will probably offer better value. The main disadvantage is that the Mac Studio is just the computer: youll need to provide a display, keyboard and mouse or trackpad, which can add considerably to the overall cost if you dont already own them. You should also choose your memory and internal storage carefully when you order because neither can be upgraded later. Why we recommend the Mac Studio (M5 Max): The Mac Studio with M5 Max strikes a strong balance between performance and price for professionals who rely on processor- and graphics-intensive apps. Its 18-core CPU, powerful GPU, up to 128GB of unified memory and high memory bandwidth make it well suited to video editing, 3D rendering, software development, music production and AI workloads, especially if you regularly spend time waiting for projects to render, compile or export. At $2,499/2,499 it isnt cheap, and youll still need to provide a display and peripherals, but it offers substantially more performance than the Mac mini while costing far less than the $5,499/5,499 M5 Ultra model. With the Mac Pro discontinued, the Mac Studio is now Apples highest-performance desktop and the best fit for many creative professionals, developers, engineers and other power users. The Mac Studio with M5 Ultra is Apples most powerful Mac and its highest-end desktop. The M5 Ultra chip combines two M5 Max dies using Apples UltraFusion architecture, giving it significantly more CPU and GPU cores, memory capacity and bandwidth than the M5 Max model. It is designed for workloads that would overwhelm most Macs, including complex 3D rendering, multiple streams of 8K video, scientific simulations and running very large AI models locally. Whats new? Apple introduced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, replacing the M3 Ultra model that arrived in March 2025. The headline change is the M5 Ultra chip, which offers up to a 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU, with a Neural Accelerator in every GPU core. Memory bandwidth rises from 819GB/s on M3 Ultra to 1.2TB/s, while maximum unified memory remains 512GB. Apple has also introduced faster PCIe Gen 6-based SSD storage, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and genlock over USB-C. The external design is unchanged. Whos it for? The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is for people with exceptionally demanding professional workloads. That includes VFX artists rendering complex scenes, filmmakers working with multiple streams of high-resolution video, engineers running simulations, and AI researchers or data scientists working with very large models. Its ability to support as much as 512GB of unified memory is particularly significant for AI developers who want to run huge LLMs locally rather than rely on cloud services. Most users, including many creative professionals, will find the considerably cheaper M5 Max Mac Studio more than powerful enough. How much does the Mac Studio cost? The Mac Studio with M5 Ultra starts at $5,499/5,499, with a 30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 96GB unified memory and 1TB SSD. That is $200/200 more than the M3 Ultra model cost immediately before it was replaced, and $1,500 more than the $3,999 launch price of the previous-generation M3 Ultra Mac Studio when it was introduced in March 2025. There are a number of build-to-order options, including a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, and 16TB SSD. There was also a 512GB Unified Memory option, but memory shortages mean that wont be available until October 2026. A Mac Studio with M5 Ultra, 16TB SSD and 256GB unified memory costs $18,299, the 512GB RAM option will cost even more when it is available. What are the specifications? The Mac Studio withMac Ultraprocessors offers these specs: Apple M5 Ultra, 30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 96GB unified memory, 1TB SSD, $5,499/5,499 Additional options: M5 Ultra with 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU, up to 512GB unified memory (October onwards), and up to 16TB SSD. The memory bandwidth of the M5 Ultra is 1.2TB/s compared to 819GB/s in the M3 Ultra model. How do I connect stuff? The Mac Studio has the following ports: Four Thunderbolt 5 ports on the back supporting speeds of up to 120Gb/s. Two Thunderbolt 5 ports on the front. SDXC Card slot on the front. Two USB-A ports. 10Gb ethernet. HDMI. 3.5 mm headphone jack Wi-Fi 7. Bluetooth 6. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio can drive up to eight displays, including up to four Studio Display XDR displays at 5K and 120Hz. The Mac Studio does not include a display, keyboard, or mouse, so youll have to provide your own, or you can customize your order to include these devices as extra-cost options. How fast is it? How fast is it? Apple says the M5 Ultra delivers up to 1.3x faster multithreaded CPU performance, 1.8x faster graphics and 4.3x the peak AI compute performance of the M3 Ultra. Compared with M1 Ultra, Apple claims up to 2.4x faster CPU performance, 4.7x faster GPU performance and 9.8x faster AI performance. In specific workloads, Apple claims up to 3.3x faster ML training in Foundry Nuke, 4x faster LLM processing in LM Studio, 4.3x faster text-to-image generation and 1.7x faster Redshift rendering. SSD performance can also be up to twice as fast as the previous generation. Any other considerations? The biggest consideration is whether you actually need this much performance. At $5,499/5,499 before any upgrades, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio costs $3,000/3,000 more than the entry-level M5 Max Mac Studio. The M5 Max model is already an extremely powerful workstation and will be sufficient for many video editors, developers, photographers and other creative professionals. If you do need large amounts of unified memory, remember that memory and internal storage cannot be upgraded after purchase, so choose your configuration carefully. Why we recommend the Mac Studio M3 Ultra: The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is excessive for most people, but that is the point. It offers the highest CPU core count in any Mac, Apples most powerful GPU, up to 512GB of unified memory and an extraordinary 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth in a compact desktop. The jump in AI performance makes it particularly compelling for developers and researchers who need to run extremely large models locally, while its 80-core GPU, powerful media engines and extensive Thunderbolt 5 connectivity make it equally well suited to demanding video, VFX and 3D workflows. If your work can actually take advantage of that hardware, this is the most powerful Mac you can buy. The iMac is what Apple is famous for, although the current design is as far removed from the original as you. can get. Its the Mac to have in a living room or an office reception somewhere you can show it off. Whats new? In October 2024 Apple introduced the M4 version of the 24-inch iMac. Little has changed since the redesign of 2021, which represented the first major update in more than a decade, with a cleaner design and a choice of seven bright colors (slightly lighter shades for 2024). Whos it for? The iMac is great for both novices and demanding users. It can handle general-purpose and heavy-duty tasks equally well, although those after a replacement for a 27-inch IMac or iMac Pro might want to wait to see if the rumored iMac Pro ever materializes, or settle for a Mac mini Pro or Mac Studio. Its ideal for someone who needs to buy a complete computer setup (keyboard, mouse or trackpad, and display) and wants to maximize workspace efficiency. The 24-inch iMac is a design icon that will look great in any office. How much does the iMac cost? Following the June price hikes, the three standard configurations start at $1,499/1,499 (up from $1,299/1,299) for the entry-level model, and $1,699/1,699 (up from $1,499/1,499) for the mid-range. What are the specifications? The 24-inch iMac still uses Apples M4 chip. Compared to other Macs, there is half the storage as standard, at 256GB. There are several configurations available as well as build-to-order options: Apple M4, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB memory, 256GB SSD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, $1,499/1,499. Apple M4, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, 256GB SSD, four Thunderbolt 4 ports, $1,699/1,699. Apple M4, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD, four Thunderbolt 4 ports, $1,899/1,899. Apple M4, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 24GB memory, 512GB SSD, four Thunderbolt 4 ports, $2,099/2,099. Additional options: 32GB memory; up to 2TB storage What are the display specifications? The 24-inch 4.5K Retina display has 11.3 million pixels and supports the P3 wide color gamut, over a billion colors, 500 nits of brightness, and True Tone. Apple treats the display with an anti-reflective coating to help with readability. The display hasnt changed since the M1 model launched. How do I connect stuff? The $1,499 24-inch iMac 24 has two Thunderbolt 4 ports that also work with USB-C devices. The $1,699 and $1,899 iMacs have four Thunderbolt 4 ports (the previous generation had two Thunderbolt/USB 4 and two USB 3 ports). If you have a USB-A device, you need to buy an adapter, such as Apples ( $19 / 19 ). If you have multiple USB-A devices and other items, consider a Thunderbolt hub . The 24-inch iMac also has a headphone jack on the side. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 are built-in. Apple doesnt put a gigabit ethernet port on the 24-inch iMacinstead, its on the power adapter. But that ethernet-equipped power adapter comes standard with the $1,699 and $1,899 models. Its not included with the $1,499 model, but you can select it as an option at the point of purchaseand yes, that means youll have to pay extra for it. How fast is it?: The 24-inch iMac is the only Mac still using the M4 chip, so its not as fast as the other Macs, but its still got all the speed general consumers need, and it can even handle pro applications with no problem. However, the $1,499 model has only one fan inside its body, while the $1,699 and $1,899 models have two fans. That means the high-priced models do a better job of keeping the internals cool. The $1,499 model may need to slow down its performance on heavy-duty tasks in order to maintain a proper temperature. Any other considerations? The iMac doesnt represent particularly good value at its current price. A better buy is the MacBook Air, which offers a faster M5 chip with a 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB of memory, and a 512GB SSD for $1,299/1,299. By comparison, the iMac costs $1,499/1,499 yet includes an older M4 chip with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, the same 16GB of memory, and only a 256GB SSD. We feel that the iMac price is high compared to the specs on offer, but we do admire the design. We are holding out for a bigger screen. Apple is rumored to launch a M6 iMac in 2027. Why we recommend the iMac (M4): The iMac was transformed when Apple introduced the redesigned 24-inch model in 2021, with major improvements to its design, display, and performance. If youre buying one today, the $1,699/1,699 model is the sweet spot, adding more ports, Touch ID, and Ethernet. Wed still love to see Apple revive the iMac Pro with a larger display, and sincerely hope one is in the pipeline. Read our full Apple iMac (M4, 2024) review Which Mac is best for what you do? We address this question in detail in our comparison of the MacBook Air vs Pro. Its really a question of price versus power. The Air is sufficient for most peoples needs, the Pro will give you that extra boost in terms of what the Mac is capable of. Buying an entry-level MacBook Air for $1,299/1,299 will get you an excellent Mac laptop. If you want to spend less than that you may be able to find a discounted MacBook Air we round up the best MacBook Air deals regularly. If you want a larger screen, the 15-inch MacBook Air is a great option that is a lot cheaper than the smaller 14-inch MacBook Pro. The price of the Pro and Max MacBook Pro models is high, but these models offer the kind of specs professional users, especially creatives, need, including support for more RAM, and more CPU and GPU cores. If you can afford to stretch to the Max you will get the ultimate Mac without a doubt, but you need to be willing to make a significant investment. The choice between the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro is all down to the screen size. The 16-inch models are more expensive, but once you spec them out in such a way to be comparable the price difference is minor. The bigger difference is between the Pro and Max processors. Other than speed, MacBooks with Max processors can connect up to four external displays (three over Thunderbolt and one over HDMI), while since the M4 all models allow two external displays in addition to the laptop screen. (There are workarounds if you need to connect more screens). There is now another Mac laptop to consider, the MacBook Neo lowers the price of ownership of a Mac laptop to $699/699. If budget really is tight though, you might want to consider a discounted previous generation MacBook Air instead. 2. Should I upgrade from my Intel Mac? Yes. Its time! We are now more than six years into Apples transition from Intel processors to its own silicon that includes CPU, GPU, and unified memory. The transition began with the introduction of the M1 in November 2020. Since June 2023 every Mac Apple sells uses Apples own chips rather than Intel processors. If youve yet to upgrade your Intel Mac to one powered by Apples silicon what are you waiting for? If you are concerned that a must-have app doesnt run on an M-series Mac, consider finding a new app because the performance gains are tremendous. Another good reason to update your Intel Mac is that Intel chips will not be supported by Apple for much longer in terms of security updates. With the arrival of macOS Tahoe, the number of supported Intel Macs was fewer than ever, and when the next version of macOS macOS Golden Gate launches later in 2026it will not support any Intel powered Macs. This doesnt mean that in fall 2026 Intel Macs will be out in the cold, because Apple continues to support older versions of macOS with security updates for a couple more years, but, with only a few of the most recent Intel Macs supported by 2024s Sequoia the days of Intel Macs are certainly numbered. Read: How long does Apple support Macs . 3. Where can I get the best price for a new Mac? Apple rarely offers direct price cuts on new hardware, but resellers frequently do. Getting the best price on a new Mac requires knowing where to look and when to buy: Top U.S. Retailers: Amazon : Often has the lowest prices, especially during events like Prime Day. For example, during the July 2026 Prime Day event, a 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro was available for $1,749, a $450 discount. Even outside of events, Amazon frequently undercuts Apples MSRP. Best Buy : A reliable source for discounts and trade-in offers. In late 2025, Best Buy offered a massive $1,150 off an M2 Ultra Mac Studio. B&H Photo : A well-regarded authorized reseller that often has competitive pricing on Macs. Walmart : Known for exclusive deals on older models, like the M1 MacBook Air, which has been sold brand-new for just $599. Top U.K. Retailers: Amazon UK : Similar to the U.S., Amazon UK is a primary source for discounts. KRCS : An Apple Premium Reseller that frequently offers good deals. John Lewis & Currys : Reliable high-street retailers that often have competitive prices and good customer service. If youre looking for a great offer, visit our MacBook Pro deals , MacBook Air deals , iMac deals , Mac Studio deals , and Mac mini deals pages which are regularly updated. 4. What specs do I really need for my Mac? Chip : The specs you need depend on what you plan to do with your Mac. For everyday tasks such as web browsing, email, office apps and light photo editing, a standard M-series chip is more than sufficient. Apples latest entry-level desktop chip is the M6, available in the Mac mini, while other Macs still use M4 or M5-generation chips. If you regularly work with complex spreadsheets, large Photoshop files, audio projects, video editing or more demanding games, look at a Pro chip. The M5 Pro Mac mini, for example, offers up to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU and up to 64GB unified memory. For professional video production, 3D work, software development and other intensive workloads, a Max chip is more appropriate. The Mac Studio with M5 Max offers an 18-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU and as much as 128GB unified memory. The M5 Ultra, with up to a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 512GB unified memory, is aimed at the most extreme workloads, including VFX, scientific computing and running very large AI models locally. GPU : One of the biggest differences between Apples chips is GPU performance. Standard M-series chips are easily sufficient for everyday graphics, casual gaming and light creative work. Pro chips add considerably more GPU power for video editing, graphics work, 3D applications and gaming. Max chips are designed for professional graphics, high-resolution video and demanding 3D workflows, while Ultra provides Apples highest GPU performance. The M5 Max offers up to 40 GPU cores, while the M5 Ultra doubles that to 80 GPU cores. Both also have Neural Accelerators built into every GPU core to speed up AI workloads. RAM : Apple calls RAM Unified Memory. The MacBook Neo is limited to 8GB, which is probably the biggest drawback of that machine. Most Macs start with at least 16GB, which is plenty for everyday use, although we recommend choosing more if your budget allows because the memory cannot be upgraded later. 24GB or 32GB is a good choice for heavier multitasking, photo editing, podcasting, moderate video production and gaming. Developers and professional creative users may benefit from 48GB, 64GB or more. The new M5 Pro Mac mini can be configured with up to 64GB, M5 Max Mac Studio with up to 128GB, and M5 Ultra Mac Studio with an enormous 512GB. Storage : Even with iCloud and external drives available, it can seem like you can never have enough storage inside your Mac. 256GB may be sufficient for basic web and office use, but it can fill up quickly. We recommend 512GB for most people who want to keep a Mac for several years, particularly if you store photos, games or media locally. For regular video or audio production, 1TB or more is preferable. Professional users may need several terabytes: the M5 Pro Mac mini can be configured with up to 8TB, while Mac Studio configurations go even higher. As with unified memory, internal Mac storage cannot be upgraded after purchase, so it is worth thinking about future requirements when ordering. Apple Giving Some Mac Mini Customers a Free Upgrade

Apple has informed some customers who recently ordered a Mac mini with an M4 chip that has yet to ship that it will be upgrading their order to an equivalent version of the new Mac mini with an M6 chip at no additional cost. Apple's email to customers: Thank you for your recent Mac order. We know you're looking forward to receiving your purchase. As you may know, Apple recently announced the new Mac mini. Since your order has yet to ship, we automatically upgraded you to the new Mac mini at no additional cost. Given the Mac mini now starts at $899 instead of $799 in the U.S., some customers are effectively receiving a $100 discount on the new model. One customer on social media was delighted to learn that they would not only be receiving the new Mac mini at no additional cost, but also saw their delivery estimate bumped up from October to September. On the other hand, a student emailed us to complain that their delivery estimate was pushed back by several weeks as a result of the free upgrade, as they said they need the computer imminently for their studies. The student said Apple did not offer them a choice to accept or decline the free upgrade. Apple announced the new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chip options this week, alongside a new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chip options. Both new Macs are available to pre-order now ahead and launch on Tuesday, September 22. The previous-generation Mac mini was released in November 2024. 75% of US Adults Aren

Three out of four U.S. adults say they have no interest in buying a foldable iPhone, according to a new survey from CNET . CNET 's survey was conducted online by YouGov between August 13 and 17, polling 2,605 U.S. adults. It found that 75% are not interested in an Apple foldable device, and those who are would not pay anywhere near the rumored $2,000+ price. Interest is low across every generation surveyed. Boomers (19461964) and Gen Xers (19651980) are the least interested, at 83% and 77% respectively, while 69% of Gen Z (19972012) and 68% of millennials (19811996) also said they would pass on a foldable iPhone. CNET noted that a quarter of respondents still expressing interest in the device is a notable proportion for what remains a niche product category. On average, U.S. adults said they would spend just $781 on a foldable iPhone, about $48 less than the $799 starting price of the standard iPhone 17 . Gen Z was willing to spend the most, an average of $919, followed by millennials at $859, Gen X at $690, and Boomers at $572. That mismatch between expected pricing and what buyers actually want to pay highlights just how far a $2,000+ device will sit outside most people's budgets. Moreover, CNET found that 41% of U.S. adults are rethinking their upgrade plans because of anticipated price increases. Apple raised prices on most of its devices in June, citing the global memory shortage, though iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods prices were untouched at the time. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to cost more than its predecessor when it launches for the same reasons. 5% of respondents said they are considering buying an older or cheaper model, 4% are considering switching brands, and 4% are looking at refurbished or used phones. Another 9% said they will only upgrade if a trade-in or carrier promotion covers the cost. 22% of U.S. adults said they have no plans to upgrade anytime soon regardless of what Apple releases, ranging from 16% of millennials to 27% of Boomers. Alleged Foldable iPhone Motherboard Photos Surface Online

Images and video claiming to show circuitry from Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone are circulating on X and Chinese social media platforms. For example, on X, the user LusiRoy7 posted a short video alongside an image, as well as a labeled composite image identifying components, purportedly depicting the motherboard of Apple's foldable iPhone. The image appears to show the CPU, a hinge connector, a flex cable connector, and more. Separately, on the Chinese forum Baidu , a diagram from the repair parts vendor MIJING depicts the same components. The MIJING diagram uses Chinese repair-industry component numbering. The range of images appear to show the same parts. While the authenticity of the images is unknown, they are likely another sign that the launch of the first foldable iPhone is nearing. The device is widely expected to be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models next month. Rumors point to a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch inner display, the A20 Pro chip, and a 5,000mAh battery, as well as a 48-megapixel dual rear camera system and 18-megapixel selfie cameras on both the outer and inner displays. The device is expected to debut with a price of at least $2,000. M5 vs. M6 Chip Buyer

Apple yesterday announced the M6, its first chip built using a 2nm process and the first Apple silicon design to use three different CPU core types, but how does it compare to the M5? Compared to the M5 chip that Apple launched in October 2025, the M6 delivers: Up to 1.2x faster multithreaded CPU performance. Nearly 30% higher peak GPU compute for AI. Up to 2x peak Neural Engine compute. 50% higher geometry rates for complex graphics. 10% higher unified memory bandwidth. Apple did not publish real-world benchmarks comparing the M6 to the M5 directly, instead framing its Mac mini figures against the M4 and M1 models: Up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio versus M1, and up to 4.8x faster versus the M4. Up to 2.3x faster spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel versus M1, and up to 1.5x faster versus the M4. Up to 2x faster gaming performance with ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition versus the M4. The most significant architectural change is in the CPU. The M5 splits its ten cores into performance and efficiency groups, which is an arrangement Apple silicon has used since the M1. The M6 adds a third tier called super cores, which handle single-threaded workloads and which Apple says give the chip the world's fastest single-threaded performance. The performance cores join them for heavier multithreaded work, while the efficiency cores take background tasks. The second major change is the Neural Engine, which is now doubled, with system frameworks able to use both engines at once so apps see faster model execution without any work from developers required. Other hardware changes compared to the M5 include: Apple M5 Chip (2025) Apple M6 Chip (2026) Made with TSMC's third-generation 3nm process (N3P) Made with TSMC's first-generation 2nm process (N2) FinFET transistors Gate-all-around nanosheet transistors 10-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores 12-core CPU with 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores Super cores dedicated to single-threaded workloads 16-core Neural Engine Dual 16-core Neural Engine that system frameworks can run simultaneously 10-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core Enhanced shader cores Updated shader core architecture Second-generation dynamic caching Third-generation dynamic caching 153 GB/s unified memory bandwidth 170 GB/s unified memory bandwidth The move to a 2nm process is a significant technical change. Apple chips have used FinFET transistors for years, but the M6's N2 process uses a newer design with gate-all-around nanosheet transistors. This means that the transistor's gate wraps around the channel on every side, giving it better control and reducing power leakage at tiny sizes. TSMC says N2 can offer 1015% more speed at the same power, or 2530% lower power use at the same speed, compared with its N3E process. But the M5 uses the newer N3P process, not N3E, so the actual M5-to-M6 improvement is likely to be smaller than those figures suggest. The M6 is a broad but fairly modest upgrade. It improves the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and memory bandwidth, rather than delivering a dramatic gain in one area. The M5's biggest leap was in AI-focused GPU performance, thanks to Neural Accelerators built into each GPU core. The M6's reported 1.2 multithreaded CPU gain and 10% increase in memory bandwidth are good refinements rather than step-changes. Single-threaded performance is the main exception. Some tasks cannot be split across many CPU cores, including code compilation, file indexing, image editing, and parts of agentic AI workflows. These tasks depend heavily on the speed of one core, and the M6's new super cores are designed to improve that directly. A doubled Neural Engine should also help with local AI models, while the larger GPU can process prompts faster. For everyday work and general responsiveness, the difference will probably be difficult to notice. The M5 already has more than enough performance for normal use, so there is little general-purpose reason to upgrade from an M5 to an M6. The more consequential question for buyers is where the M6 sits in the lineup, because it is not part of a straightforward replacement for the M5 family. Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman reported in July that Apple has no plans to release M6 Pro, M6 Max, or M6 Ultra chips, having decided to accelerate development of the AI-optimized M7 generation. The new Mac mini illustrates this point, since its higher-specification configuration uses the M5 Pro. That makes the M6 the first of its kind to not have higher-end variants, and it means the M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra remain the chips to buy if you need anything more than base-tier performance. The dual Neural Engine and 2nm process give the M6 headroom for on-device AI tools that grow more demanding, but the M7 is expected in the first half of 2027 with neural processing upgrades that prompted Apple to cut the M6 lineup short. If your workloads are AI-heavy enough that the M6's gains matter to you, the chip designed for exactly that is less than a year away. The M6 chip is currently available only in the new Mac mini , which starts at $899 and ships on September 22. M6 versions of the MacBook Pro and iMac are expected to be announced in October . The M5 chip remains available in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, the latest iPad Pro , and the Apple Vision Pro , with M5 Pro and M5 Max in the higher-end MacBook Pro models and M5 Max and M5 Ultra in the new Mac Studio . Apple Maps Ads Are Here, and There

Ads in Apple Maps are live in the United States and Canada, which means iPhone and iPad users will see them when searching for locations and when viewing Suggested Places. Apple announced plans to bring ads to the Maps app in March, and said the feature would roll out starting in late summer. Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that ads began showing up for users over the last few days, with ad placement to ramp up in the coming weeks. Ads are shown in Suggested Places when initiating a search and after searching if a company has bought an ad for a keyword you're looking for. Ads are shown at the top of search results, with one ad per set of search results. There is no option to turn off ads in the Maps app, but ads are clearly labeled with a blue Ad tag. Apple says ads you interact with in the Maps app are not associated with your Apple Account, and data is not shared with third parties. Apple has been preparing to launch ads all summer, with signs of ads showing up in iOS 26 updates. Apple started allowing businesses to purchase ad slots in August, offering a 15 percent credit toward future ad spend as an incentive. Ads for home services, bail bonds, and cryptocurrency ATMs are not allowed in the Maps app per Apple's Advertising Services policy . Ads that promote or reference medical services may be allowed, and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Maps ads also have to adhere to Apple's other advertising rules. New Mac Mini and Mac Studio: 13 Things You Might Have Missed

Apple today announced new M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini models and M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio models. We've covered all of the announcements in-depth , but wanted to highlight some interesting tidbits about the new machines. Price Increases - The Mac mini now starts at $899, $300 over the original starting price of the M4 Mac mini when it launched in October 2024. Mac Studio pricing starts at $2,499, $500 more than the original price of the M4 Max model when it came out in March 2025. Connectivity - Apple upgraded the new Macs with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, so they are on par with the connectivity standards in the latest iPhone models. Wi-Fi 7 offers faster data speeds in the 6GHz band, lower latency, and an option to connect across 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz networks at once for reliability improvements. Genlock - The Mac mini and Mac Studio support genlock over USB-C, so there's no need for a separate sync box. Genlock is used in multi-camera shoots and virtual production to lock timing to a shared reference signal. The Mac's display and the camera filming it are synchronized, preventing flickering and tearing from a mismatch between the display refresh rate and camera shutter. Apple previously added genlock support to the iPhone 17 Pro models, so now an iPhone 17 Pro and one of the new Macs can work in tandem for pros who need the feature. Ethernet - The Mac mini now starts with 2.5Gb Ethernet instead of 1Gb. There's an option to upgrade to 10Gb, which is what the Mac Studio starts with (same as the prior-generation model). Neural Engine - The M6 chip has an upgraded Neural Engine with two 16-core engines instead of just one. Apple says the new Neural Engine offers 2x more peak compute so AI workflows run faster. GPU - The M6 Mac mini's 12-core GPU has Neural Accelerators in each core, offering up to 4x faster AI performance and 2x faster graphics than the M4 Mac mini. The Mac Studio's M5 Ultra is also the first Ultra chip with Neural Accelerators. Peak AI compute performance is 4.3x the M3 Ultra's performance. SSD - Mac Studio storage is twice as fast with new SSD architecture built on PCIe Gen 6. SSD Pricing - As Daring Fireball points out, upgrading a Mac mini with a 2TB SSD costs $1,000, which is more than the $899 base price of the machine. Upgrading to the 4TB SSD for the M5 Pro costs $1,800, which is $100 over the price of the base machine. Thunderbolt - The M6 Mac mini continues to have Thunderbolt 4, not Thunderbolt 5. The M5 Pro model does have Thunderbolt 5. Current Max Pricing - An M5 Pro Mac mini with 18-core CPU, 64GB RAM, an 8TB SSD, and 10GbE is $6,799. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio with 36-core CPU, 256GB RAM, and 16TB SSD is $18,299. 512GB RAM - The M5 Ultra Mac Studio supports up to 512GB RAM, with the option coming in late October. Upgrading to 256GB RAM costs $4,000, and the 512GB option will be even more expensive. 96GB and 256GB RAM are the only options right now. Announcement Timing - This is the first time Apple has announced new Macs in August since the 27-inch iMac debuted in August 2020. macOS Golden Gate - When the new machines launch on September 22, they will likely have macOS Golden Gate installed. The software update is probably going to come out the week of September 14. The new Mac Studio and Mac mini models can be pre-ordered starting today, and will be available on September 22. Amid raging price hikes, Apple slashes flagship cloth by more than 50%

Macworld On a day of high-priced product announcements, Apple has offered a crumb of comfort to its more cash-strapped customers: the beloved Polishing Cloth has dropped in price by a whopping 53 percent. Relentlessly memed on for charging a faintly absurd $19 for the square cloth at launch three years ago, the company is now happy to accept just $9 for seemingly the same product. The common thread uniting Tuesdays two big Mac updates was prices going up. The M6 Mac mini starts at $899, up from $599 for the equivalent M4 model just two months ago. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio , meanwhile, starts at $5,499, a price hike of another $200 over the previous price hike. But the Polishing Cloth went against the grain with a huge price drop. Apple didnt send out a press release advertising the nonabrasive fabric accessorys new bargain price. Instead, it quietly removed the previous store entry (which carried the product code MW693AM/A ) and put up a new one in its place ( MLH74AM/A ) with an updated price. Other than the price and code, it appears to be an identical product with an identical description. As before, that includes the endlessly amusing Compatibility section, which lists every iPhone and iPad going back to 2012, every single Apple Watch, and a huge list of MacBooks. In some ways, its surprising the company bothered to make the list since the description makes it clear that the Polishing Cloth cleans any Apple display, but we appreciate the effort. Whether this bargain price will last remains to be seen. Unlike other Apple devices the Polishing Cloth is unlikely to be affected by the ongoing memory shortage, but well be monitoring international microfiber shipments with the greatest of interest.

Apple Smart Home Display Still Coming This Year

Apple remains on track to launch its first smart home device with a screen before the end of the year, according to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman . Gurman reiterated that the device will use facial recognition to determine who is standing in front of it and serve up personalized content for that individual user. The description lines up with code found in macOS Tahoe 26.7 earlier this week, which revealed that the smart home hub will support multiple user profiles and use ambient sensing to verify identity. Apple is also readying a new Apple TV and an updated HomePod mini as part of the same renewed push into the home, according to Gurman. Apple's smart home hub has been rumored for years. It is rumored to feature a square, seven-inch display with a front-facing camera, running an operating system closer to tvOS than iOS, with a home screen built around quick-access widgets. Pricing is expected to land somewhere around $350. Apple originally intended to release the device in spring 2025, then targeted spring 2026, before pushing it back to September because Siri AI was not ready. Gurman reported over the weekend that Apple is rearranging sections of its retail stores to accommodate new smart home products. Apple Quietly Refreshes Magic Keyboards

Apple today quietly introduced updated Magic Keyboard models with revised U.S. English key labeling. On the new keyboards, the tab, caps lock, shift, return, and delete keycaps are labeled with glyphs rather than edge text. On the full-size models with a numeric keypad, the change goes further, with the home, page up, page down, end, clear, and enter keys also swapping their text labels for symbols. Four models have been updated: the Magic Keyboard , the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID , and the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad in both white keys and black keys . The one U.S. English model Apple has not refreshed is the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad , which lacks Touch ID and continues to use text labels on the same keys. The change mirrors the one Apple made to its laptops earlier this year, when the new MacBook Air , MacBook Pro , and MacBook Neo adopted glyphs on the same set of keys. Since the U.S. English layout is the default option in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, among other countries, the new labeling effectively extends well beyond the United States. Apple has used glyphs on its British English and other European layouts for some time, so the symbols will already be familiar to customers there. Apple announces the M5 Ultra Mac Studio with up to 512GB of RAM

Macworld While all eyes are on the upcoming iPhone event, Apple threw us a curveball Tuesday morning with a rare August launch of an updated Mac Studio with the all-new M5 Ultra processor. The new Mac Studio is visually identical to the previous model but has major upgrades inside. Instead of the M4 Max and M3 Ultra, you can now buy a Mac Studio with an M5 Max or M5 Ultra processor, with up to a whopping 512GB of RAM. Here are the specs Apple is offering for the two chips: Mac Studio (M5 Max) Mac Studio (M5 Ultra) CPU 18-core CPU with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores 30-core/36-core CPU with 10/12 super cores and 20/24 performance cores GPU 32-core/40-core 64-core/80-core Neural Engine 16-core 32-core Memory 36GB/48GB/64GB/128GB 96GB/256GB/512GB Memory bandwidth 460GB/s 1.2TB/s Video encode engines Two Four ProRes engines Two Four Other features Hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProResRAW; Neural Accelerators; Hardware-accelerated ray tracing; AV1 decode Hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProResRAW; Neural Accelerators; Hardware-accelerated ray tracing; AV1 decode While the M5 Ultra is still double the capability of the M5 Max, Apple touts its next-generation UltraFusion technology to form a quad-die architecture for the first time in an M-series chip. The previous UltraFusion interconnector linked two Max dies over 10,000 high-speed connections that offer low latency and high bandwidth. It was previously reported that Apple was working to create a new version of the Ultra chip with more advanced UltraFusion architecture. Apple is leaning hard into AI and calls the M5 Ultra Mac Studio a game changer for AI workloads and says AI coding agents process significantly faster, image generation tools can render creations in an instant, and enterprise teams can cluster multiple systems to scale performance to new heights. In addition to the new chips, the Mac Studio now has an N1 chip to bring Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, as well as a next-generation SSD architecture built on PCIe Gen 6. We already praised the MacBook Pro for its super-fast storage speeds, and Apple now claims the new SSDs deliver industry-leading read and write speeds for rapid project loading, file transfers, and loading huge LLMs. Now for the not-so-good news. While the M5 Max model starts at the same $2,499 as the post-price-hike M4 Max, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio now starts at $5,499, an increase of another $200 over the previous price hike. That means youre paying $1,500 more than if you bought an M3 Ultra Mac Studio before June. Youre also paying more for storage and RAM, so get ready to shell out well over 20 grand for a fully loaded model (which wont be available until October). The most expensive M5 Ultra you can get now, with 256GB of RAM and 16TB of storage, costs $18,299. The M5 Mac Studio is available for pre-order now but wont begin shipping until September 22.

Apple launches new M6 Mac mini with another price hike

Macworld As predicted on this site earlier today, Apple has announced the launch of a new Mac mini model with M5 and M6 chip options. It doesnt feature any design changes or external upgrades, but it does offer a two-generation bump in processors compared to the previous model. Slightly confusingly, the version of the Mac mini with a chip from the M5 generation is the more powerful of the two, because its the M5 Pro . This spec starts at $1,699 for a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, but customers have the option to bump that to 18 and 20 cores, respectively, for an additional $200. There are also configuration options to increase RAM from the starting 24GB or storage from the baseline 512GB, and to upgrade to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The RAM options remain the same, but the 64GB highest-end option now costs $1,000. More appealing for the Mac minis traditional budget market will be the M6 model, which starts at a far more manageable $899. That, however, is still a $100 increase over the M4 model from 2024 that it replaces. Worse, the M4 model started at just $599 until June, when Apple responded to the ongoing memory crunch by imposing brutal price hikes . In other words, the cheapest entry point to Apples desktop Mac ecosystem has jumped by $300, or 50 percent, in the space of two months. The $899 version isnt exactly a state-of-the-art build, either. The entry-level configuration comes with 16GB of RAM and just 256GB of storage. We should note that it is possible to get this spec for $799, but only if youre an education buyer . Of note, the Mac mini is not available for the Apple Upgrade program either. Apple The price hike is likely to weaken the Mac minis appeal among budget buyers, but (aside from the necessity to accommodate increasing component costs) Apple may not care. In his report predicting that a new mini was on the way, Bloombergs Mark Gurman noted that the machine had become increasingly popular for running AI applications locally, and that Apple was struggling to meet demand. The company may not mind if fewer customers are prepared to pay the asking price, since there are plenty of AI fans ready to take their place. Those AI fans will likely be tempted by a new model with a new chip. Apple boasts that the M6 delivers gains across every dimension of performance and the ideal balance of performance, power efficiency, and on-device AI to effortlessly fly through daily tasks, coding, and creative projects. In numerical terms, the company claims the M6 version of the Mac will deliver up to 4x faster AI performance,2x faster storageand graphics, and 40% faster CPU performance than the M4 mini. The M5 Pro model, meanwhile, is rated by its maker as up to 8.5x faster at LLM prompt processing than its M2 Pro predecessor, and up to 4x faster than the M4 Pro model. Naturally we will put those claims to the test in our labs. Another surprise is how early Apple has announced the new Mac mini. Pre-orders are open now, but it wont go on sale until 22 September, almost a month from now.

Apple Unveils New Mac Studio With M5 Max and M5 Ultra Chips

Apple today announced new Mac Studio models with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, the latter of which is the company's most powerful chip ever. The new Mac Studio features a next-generation SSD architecture built on PCIe Gen 6 that Apple says is up to twice as fast as before. The machine also gains Thunderbolt 5 ports with up to 120Gb/s of bandwidth, along with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for the first time via Apple's N1 chip. The new Mac Studio also supports genlock over USB-C and can drive up to eight displays. The M5 Ultra chip includes an up to 36-core CPU that contains 12 super cores and 24 performance cores. It delivers up to 1.25x higher single-threaded performance and up to 1.3x higher multithreaded performance than the M3 Ultra from the previous generation Mac Studio. The M5 Ultra features a GPU with up to 80 cores, and a Neural Accelerator is built into each core, offering up to 4.5x the peak GPU compute for AI tasks compared to the M3 Ultra and more than 6x compared to the M1 Ultra . Apple says the GPU's latest shader core technology, paired with second-generation Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and third-generation ray tracing, delivers up to 40% faster graphics performance than the M3 Ultra. The chip also includes a more capable Media Engine, with dedicated hardware for H.264, HEVC, four ProRes encode and decode engines, and hardware-accelerated AV1 decode, along with a 32-core Neural Engine for on-device AI tasks. The M5 Ultra is built by connecting two dual-die M5 Max chips using Apple's next-generation UltraFusion technology, which increases inter-die bandwidth to over 4.4TB/s and connection density by more than 6x, allowing the four dies to function as a single processor. The new Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB of unified memory and up to 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth, which is a 50% increase over M3 Ultra. Apple says the added memory and bandwidth allows users to store large datasets locally, increase tokens per second, and run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on device. Users can also cluster multiple Mac Studio systems together using built-in support for Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA (remote direct memory access), creating a shared memory pool across systems. Apple says a cluster of four Mac Studio systems delivers up to 3x faster AI inference than a single system. The Mac Studio is also now available with the M5 Max chip, offering an 18-core CPU with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores, up to 40 GPU cores, up to 128GB of unified memory with up to 614GB/s of memory bandwidth, and up to 8TB of storage. Apple says the M5 Max delivers up to 3.9x faster AI performance than the previous generation. The new Mac Studio will be released on September 22, but the model with 512GB of unified memory launches in late October. It is available for pre-order now. Did China Secretly Disable U.S. Navy Destroyer? USS Benfold's Mysterious Four-Day Blackout Revealed

Did Chinas electronic warfare capabilities play a role in the mysterious four-day blackout of the USS Benfold in the South China Sea? The U.S. Navy says the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer suffered an engineering casualty involving its generators on July 24, 2026, leaving the warship without normal power for four days. The crew reportedly lost air conditioning, toilets, galley services and access to some potable water before the destroyer was towed to Subic Bay, Philippines, for repairs. But the location raises a bigger question: could Chinas advanced electronic warfare capabilities have played any role? There is currently no public evidence that China attacked or disabled the USS Benfold, and the U.S. Navys investigation into the generator failure is ongoing. Still, China and the United States are engaged in an intense electronic warfare and military-technology competition across the Indo-Pacific.
