6 ways the fall iPhone event will

Macworld Over the past several years, Apples fall launches have generally been seen as lackluster. Each September, the company tends to put out refreshed iPhone and Apple Watch models with just a couple of tweaks here and there. And thats understandable, as the classic smartphone and smartwatch formulas have matured, and theres little left to develop on an annual cycle. That wont be the case this year, however. Rather than merely rehashing last years iPhones and Apple Watches, Apple is set to announce a truly inspiring range of products on September 9including first-generation editions of never-before-seen technology. While the event will undoubtedly still feature some iterative upgrades, a flurry of bigger announcements will give this years show an excitement that we havent had in years. The Ultra iPhone unfolds The fall launchs most significant announcement will likely be the highly anticipated iPhone Ultra . The rumored foldable will reportedly resemble an iPhone/iPad mini hybrid, unlocking basic multitasking features unavailable on current iPhone models. Thanks to its book-style design, the iPhone Ultra will be iPhone-like in its folded form, while unfolding it will turn it into more of an iPad. Given its ist-gen status, many customers may be wary of investing in an iPhone Ultra. After all, the first Samsung Galaxy Fold infamously suffered from crease issues and wasnt as durable as consumers would expect a flagship device to be. Hopefully that wont be the case with the iPhone Ultra. The iPhone Ultra is exoected to have similar dimensions to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. Luke Baker Samsungs first folding phone launched seven years ago. During this period, Apple has been prototyping foldables internally to master the formula. It may not have released any folding iPhones to the public, but it sure has been experimenting with different concepts and materials all along. Reports indicate that eliminating the crease is a top priority at Apple, and the companys rigorous testing will ensure that the iPhone Ultras quality will meet its high standards. The price is another story, however. We expect the iPhone Ultra to start at more than $2,000, and the current RAM crisis could push prices closer to $2,500. That might be too much for most people to swallow. Next-gen Watch power The past few Apple Watch annual upgrades have been some of the most iterative. The fundamental design has largely remained unchanged other than small tweaks, while the chip tends to get a boost only every three years. But this year, the Apple Watch Series 12 will likely pack the faster S12 chip, which could unlock exclusive watchOS features for years to come. The upcoming watchOS 27 infamously cuts off all smartwatch models older than three years due to the increasing demands of Siri AI. The S12 chip will future-proof the Series 12 and potentially unlock exclusive features in OS 27 and beyond. It may seem like an unexciting performance boost from afar, but its actual impact will likely be meaningful. The Apple Watch Series 12 will likely have a faster processor for better AI processing. Foundry A truly Pro camera While iPhones have become the go-to digital cameras for most Apple users, they still struggle to completely replace DSLR and mirrorless cameras popular among professional photographers. No matter how much iPhones improve, the limited space and the sensors small size restrict the outputs quality. According to some credible rumors, at least one iPhone 18 Pro model will help bridge that gap. Reports claim that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will introduce a variable aperture lens. This will allow users to physically control the lens opening to match the environment and lighting. In dim places, for example, users can open the lens wide to allow more light in and produce clearer shots. Conversely, they can narrow it down in bright settings to prevent overexposure. Beyond adapting to the lighting conditions, a variable aperture can provide support for true optical depth control. While Portrait mode already allows you to artificially tweak the depth, the results dont always appear natural. So, whether youre shooting regularly or in Portrait mode, the variable aperture lens will help produce superior results, elevating iPhone photography further. Apples smart home ambitions could begin to take shape at the Surprise and Shine event. Foundry Smarter homes For years, Apples smart home efforts have revolved around two main product lines: HomePod and Apple TV 4K. While the two devices offer convenient ecosystem integrations for iPhone users, theyre not as smart as other smart speakers and set-top boxes. However, with Siri AI finally on track to launch next month, things are about to change. Apple is reportedly ready to release more capable versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K , letting users utilize its overhauled AI chatbot directly on those devices. More importantly, Apple could use the Surprise and Shine event to announce its long-rumored HomePad , a smart home hub that might borrow features from iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS. This would potentially allow users to conveniently control their HomeKit accessories, FaceTime their contacts, glance at relevant data, and do more using its touchscreen. With OS 27 introducing new camera-related HomeKit features, reports also suggest that Apple may soon reveal its own security camera. Such a product could become the go-to option for privacy-conscious customers who dont necessarily trust third-party manufacturers with live video feeds of their intimate spaces. Will new AirPods pop up at Apples fall iPhone event? Foundry Surprise AirPods While a recent leak revealed the existence of AirPods Pro with cameras to leverage Apples new AI features, theyre not expected to arrive until 2027. Were still holding out hope, but even if they dont show up, that doesnt mean AirPods wont make some noise at Apples iPhone event. A recent report by Bloombergs Mark Gurman suggested that AirPods 5 could arrive at the September show. We dont know much about them, and since they already have an H2 chip, a bigger update could be in store. Weve heard reports for years about a new design or a cheaper budget model, so perhaps Apple has a real surprise for us this time. Unreleased OS 27 features Speaking of surprises, it goes without saying that all of these unannounced hardware products will boast some software perks that Apple didnt disclose during WWDC26. The iPhone Ultra, for example, will reveal iOS 27s all-new multitasking system. Meanwhile, the firm will unveil watchOS 27s new watch face during the keynotes Apple Watch Series 12 segment, possibly along with a fresh health or fitness feature. We could also see Camera app tweaks when Apple previews the iPhone 18 Pro. After a summer of beta testing, the Release Candidate versions of Apples annual operating systems pretty much always pack a few surprises aimed at the newest devicesand we cant wait to see whats in store for us.

Macworld During Apple surprise Mac announcements last week, the company declared in its press release that the Mac Studio features a next-generation SSD architecture built on PCIe Gen 6. However, that mention has since been removed from the Mac Studio press release and site, as spotted by MacGeneration . The PCIe Gen 6 statement has been removed from the Apple U.K., Apple Germany, and Apple Japan press releases, though strangely, the PCIe Gen 6 reference still exists in the Apple France press release . The releases still list August 25, 2026, as the day of publication and have no record of an update, but we, along with many other outlets, quoted the PCIe Gen 6 in our original stories and havent been contacted by Apple about a correction. The press release now reads, Storage performance is up to twice as fast, with a next-generation SSD architecture, delivering industry-leading read and write speeds for rapid project loading, file transfers, and loading huge LLMs. The twice as fast comparision is to the M3 Ultra Mac Studio. The Internet Archive has a copy of the U.S. Mac Studio press release, recorded on August 25 at 13:03:29, and it contains the PCIe Gen 6 reference. Other copies recorded by the Internet Archive on August 25 still have the reference, but the first record of the press release on August 26 at 02:03:13 shows that the release was revised to remove references to PCIe Gen 6. PCIe Gen 6 is the next generation of the PCIe interconnect standard, offering performance upgrades over the PCIe Gen 5 standard. Apple did not specify that the M5 Ultra Mac Studio implements PCIe Gen 5, but the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are equipped with it. So its likely that the M5 Ultra has it too, and Apple made an error in its press release. Apple was contacted for clarification and had yet to respond at the time of this posting.

Apple's AirPods with cameras could improve spatial audio on the iPhone and other Apple devices by detecting the position of the display the wearer is looking at. Details on the capability were found in macOS Tahoe 26.7 code, and shared on the MacRumors forums by member Mactracker. Sensors in the current AirPods power a spatial audio head tracking feature, and cameras could take that further. Code suggests the camera-equipped AirPods will find the physical screen the wearer is watching content on, comparing the screen's direction with the direction estimated by the motion sensors in the AirPods. The AirPods may be able to identify laptops, displays, smartphones, tablets, and TVs, even detecting multiple displays and narrowing audio to the one the wearer is looking at. Screen detection will work behind the scenes and may pause when the wearer is in motion. Devices with Face ID already use the Face ID sensors to assist with head tracking, but if the user also has AirPods with cameras, the AirPods will prefer camera input over Face ID. Code also references a server-based visual reasoning feature, further reinforcing rumors of Visual Intelligence support. The AirPods will reportedly send camera data to Apple's servers for Visual Intelligence requests. Apple today added three Macs to its list of obsolete products . The 2018 Retina MacBook Air , the 13-inch 2018 MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, and the 13-inch 2017 MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports are now considered obsolete. The three products were previously part of the vintage list, but have been moved. Apple adds a product to the vintage list when it's been five years since it was last distributed for sale, and it becomes obsolete at the seven-year mark. Vintage products can still be repaired at Apple retail locations and by Apple Authorized Service Providers if Apple has the parts available. Devices that are obsolete are generally not eligible for repair, and Apple stops making repair components. Apple has a battery-only repair policy for Mac laptops for up to 10 years after the Mac was last distributed for sale, so 2017/2018 MacBook Pro and 2018 MacBook Air owners may still be able to get battery replacements. The 2018 MacBook Air was the first in the Air line with Touch ID and a Retina display. Macworld Bloombergs Mark Gurman reported on Monday that Apple executive Phil Schiller is stepping down from his roles as leader of the App Store and manager of product events. The news comes on Tim Cooks last day as Apple CEO . Schiller became an Apple Fellow in 2020 after initially stepping down as SVP of Worldwide Marketing, a position he had held since 2000. He joined Apple as a product marketing manager in 1987, but left in 1995 for Macromedia. He rejoined Apple in 1997 when Steve Jobs returned to the company. When Schiller became an Apple Fellow, he relinquished his marketing role to Greg Joswiak , but he continued to lead the efforts for the App Store and product events. The App Store duties move over to Apples services division, which is run by SVP Eddy Cue. Carson Oliver will run the App Store on a daily basis. Apples events team is now run by Nola Weinstein, who has acted as Schillers deputy since 2023, according to Gurman. Weinstein reports to Kristin Huguet Quayle, Apples vice president of communications and public relations. Schiller will still serve as an Apple Fellow and will work on unspecified initiatives, but the change is an indication that Schiller is moving towards full retirement. When he stepped down as SVP in 2020, it was viewed as the start of a gradual move towards leaving the company. Apples executive suite has been undergoing a series of personal changes in the past few years as leaders age towards retirement. Lisa Jackson (VP for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives) retired in January, John Giannandrea (SVP, Machine Learning and AI) retired in April, and Katherine Adams (SVP Government Affairs) will retire by the end of the year. In 2025, Luca Maestri (CFO) and Jeff Williams (COO) retired , whille Alan Dye (VP Human Interface Design) left for Meta. And of course, Tim Cook steps down as CEO this week. The executive changes will be a challenge for incoming CEO John Ternus , but the company is in a position where it is seeing growth and success with all of its products. Apple's press release for the new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips last week initially stated that the computer had ext-generation SSD architecture built on PCIe Gen 6. However, as spotted by the French blog MacGeneration , Apple removed the PCIe 6.0 mention from the announcement shortly after it was published. The press release still mentions that the new Mac Studio has a ext-generation SSD architecture that delivers up to twice as fast storage speeds compared to the previous generation, but it no longer mentions PCIe 6.0. Apple has yet to respond to our request for comment, but it seems like the company simply made a mistake in the press release, as it is much more likely that the new Mac Studio supports the PCIe 5.0 standard. First, we already know that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the same M5 Max chip available in the new Mac Studio have SSDs with PCIe 5.0, and Apple likewise advertised up to twice as fast SSD speeds for those laptops. Second, there are no consumer PCs on the market yet that have SSDs with PCIe 6.0 support. The M5 Ultra chip is all new, but it probably supports PCIe 5.0 as well, or else Apple would not have needed to edit its Mac Studio press release. All in all, the new Mac Studio appears to support PCIe 5.0, not PCIe 6.0. Indeed, three months later, the Weibo poster Instant Digital insisted that neither the Series 12 nor the Series 13 would get a new look, and that the big redesign was actually coming in 2028. This is how it tends to go: pundits and leakers get publicity from predicting Apple Watch redesigns, and then Apple ends up sticking to essentially the same design because it dominates the market and doesnt need to take any risks. Based on this, and the fact that nobody has leaked any radical new CAD drawings or photos of a redesigned chassis from the supply chain, wed cautiously predict that (aside, potentially, from a slightly larger screen, fractionally slimmer bezels, or a new color), the Apple Watch is going to stay essentially the same for yet another year. But for the sake of variety, wed love to be wrong about that. However, a report from Bloombergs Mark Gurman claims that Apple has tested a white and dark gray ceramic model that could make an appearance this year. The last time Apple sold a ceramic watch was the Edition model in 2019. Apple Watches have looked roughly the same for years. Faster S12 processor Same battery life Continuous heart-rate tracking Whereas design tends to stay largely the same from year to year, as discussed above, Apple habitually makes worthwhile upgrades to the Apple Watchs internals. S12 processor Lets start with the processor, and this is one pattern that changed last year. Every Apple Watch from Series 1 to 10 had a corresponding chip, from the S1 to the S10. But the Series 11 came with the S10 again. Even the Ultra 3 was stuck with the previous years chip. Its unlikely that Apple will freeze the processor for another year, so wed expect the Series 12 to get something new. Whether that will be an S11 (logical) or S12 (neater, since it matches the Series number, plus it sounds newer and therefore better) doesnt really matter to customers, since the labels are more of a marketing tool than anything else. The real-world performance upgrade varies widely from generation to generation; in fact, the S6, S7, and S8 were essentially identical. Our expectation would be an S12 processor with a moderate performance bump from the S10. But processing speed isnt much of a bottleneck for the Apple Watch anyway, so we should be looking elsewhere for more meaningful change. Continuous heart-rate monitoring A report in August from Bloombergs Mark Gurman claimed that Apple has been testing a feature that will allow the Apple watch to continuously collect data throughout the day through the heart-rate sensor. Currently, it collects sporadic readings when not in the Heart Rate, Mindfulness, or Workout apps. microLED screen Perhaps the screen will get an upgrade? The Apple Watch has always had an OLED screen, and the past three Series models have been capped at 2,000 nits of brightness. (The Ultra 3 can go up to 3,000.) But there have been rumours for some years, dating back to the Apple Watch X theories, that Apple would like to switch to superior microLED tech. microLED means improved color fidelity and better power efficiency. But the biggest impact could be on brightness. At CES in 2025, Samsung showed off a concept capable of 4,000 nits . Theres a good chance this is coming at some point, but it may not happen in 2026. The Series 11 has an always-on screen, but it leaves something to be desired on the brightness front. David Price / Foundry Touch ID Another long-running rumor, but one that gained traction in late summer 2025. Apple has at the very least been exploring the idea of putting a fingerprint sensor in the Apple Watch. Macworld has seen developer code clearly referring to the 2026 Apple Watch models and mentioning support for AppleMesa, Apples internal codename for Touch ID. No previous models have featured such mentions in their code. At the time of discovery, this appeared to be at the prototype stage, so we cant be sure its coming to actual shipping products. But Touch ID on the Apple Watch, whether hidden in a side button or beneath the screen, would be useful for Apple Pay, health/fitness apps, and private messaging, not to mention unlocking the device when its companion iPhone isnt around. Blood glucose tracking Apple often gives the Apple Watch a new health or safety feature from time to time, but its been a few years since the last such upgrade. While the Series 8 was the first model to get crash detection, and hypertension and sleep apnea notifications were new on the Series 9, the Series 10 and 11 missed out in that department. The Series 12 could reverse that trend with blood glucose tracking, yet another long-term rumor. Really long term, in fact: Macworld reported on this back in 2017, when sources claimed Apple had a secret team of biomedical engineers working on non-invasive, continuous glucose monitoring to help diabetes patients, and its since emerged that research on this topic was underway in the Steve Jobs era. Activity by a British medical sensing firm led to more speculation in 2021 , and we understand that the feature reached the proof of concept in 2023. This could finally be the year, but the feature remains a long shot. watchOS 27 and Siri AI As the latest incarnation of Apples smartwatch hardware, the Series 12 will of course run the companys latest software, which means plenty of new features that havent been available in the past (and wont be available on some older Apple Watches ). watchOS 27 was announced at WWDC in June 2026 and will become publicly available in the fall. The Apple Watch hasnt previously had access to Apples AI tech, but thats all changing this year. watchOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI requires an Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, or SE 3. Youll also need a compatible iPhone . Apple Watch Series 12 price: Will the price of the Apple Watch go up this year? We expect the Series 12 to start at around $429 On June 25, 2026, Apple announced dramatic price rises across most of its range, including iPads, Apple TVs, HomePods, and both desktop and laptop Macs. The Apple Watch escaped unscathed, which is good news, right? Probably. Its important to note that Apples statement at the time said the company had now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including todays increases for iPad and Mac. That suggests that theres more to come, which may include higher starting prices for the new Apple Watch (and iPhone) models in the fall. The main point in favor of flat pricing for the watches is their comparatively low RAM allocation. Rising RAM prices are one of the main contributors to the situation, and Apple Watches have far less RAM than iPads and Macs. But wed expect a small price increase compared to the Series 11, which (at time of writing!) starts at $399, or $499 for the cellular models. Around $429 seems likely. Should you wait to buy the Apple Watch? We think so. Now is a bad time to buy an Apple Watch at full price, and even if you can get one on sale, you should wait if you possibly can. Google said it made this change in response to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) updating the name for Lake Ontario to Lake America, following an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump last week. Google Maps users in Canada will still see the Lake Ontario name only, while users outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names. Cook has been Apple's CEO since 2011 Tomorrow, Apple's hardware engineering chief John Ternus will become the company's next CEO. Cook will remain at Apple as the executive chairman of the company's board of directors. In this new role, Apple said Cook will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world. Apple finally hits a VR home run

Macworld Ive never had a desire to buy a Vision Pro . Even if I had $4,000 to blow at the Apple Store, Id probably pick up a loaded MacBook Pro or a Mac mini with a Studio Display XDR instead of Apples cutting-edge handset. But Friday Night Baseball in Apple Immersive changed my perspective. The first-ever broadcast of a live Major League Baseball game with 3D video recorded in 8K with a 180-degree field of view, watching the Red Sox-Yankees game on the Vision Pro was almost as breathtaking as being at Yankee Stadium. Even if I was able to take screenshots of the experience, it wouldnt have done it justice. Its literally the kind of thing you need to see to believe. Most of the time I was watching the game from just beside the dugout of the team that was batting. I could turn to see the on-deck batter warming up, watch the pitch come in, and see the whole park in front of me. As usual for Apples Friday Night Baseball, the picture quality was outstanding, from the on-field action to the footprints and sunflower seeds in the dirt below my view. Ive visitied many baseball stadiums and sat in all kinds of seats, but nothing compared to the immersive view Apple provided. You can get a sense of it in the post below, but a flat image doesnt really do it justice. While the camera put me inside the stadium, the broadcast still let me know that I was watching Apple TV. Paul Severino and Xavier Scruggs were the dedicated announcers (different from the ones on the Apple TV broadcast), and they often reminded viewers that they were witnessing something special. If I looked up, I could watch the flat Apple TV broadcast and see relevant stats. Live immersive MLB on Apple Vision Pro. It felt like I was at Yankee Stadium. The whole experience was incredible. I was so close to the action that I could hear muffled chatter in the dugout and see sunflowseeds spit in my direction. Between innings was particularly magical. There were no commercials, so the view stayed in the stadium, with the camera shifting to the broadcast booth above home plate numerous times to get an expansive overhead view of the whole field. And when David Bednar came in to close the ninth inning, the camera view shifted to center field so I could see his full bullpen entrance and watch him jog to the pitchers mound while his walkout song, Styxs Renegade, played in the stadium. It was so enthralling, I wanted a way to mute the broadcast to soak in the sounds of the stadium. It wasnt so much that the announcers were bad (though Apple TV has never been known for its broadcast crew), but the Spatial Audio microphones were so clear that the ambiance of the ballpark was enough. Unfortunately, the game ended 1-0, so there wasnt a ton of action other than a solo home run, but one particular play stands out as a showcase for what the immersive broadcast brings. In the top of the 7th inning, the Red Sox loaded the bases with one out, so I strapped on my Vision Pro to watch the rest of the inning. It only took two pitches to end the Red Sox threat. Wilson Contreras hit a fly ball to left field that was caught by Cody Bellinger, who fired the ball home to get a tagging-up Ceddanne Rafaela and end the inning. Watching the play unfold and turning to watch the throw reach home was incredible and and better than any TV boardcast Ive ever watched. A near homerun As we wrote in our review, Vision Pro is a pretty heavy device, so keeping it strapped on for two-plus hours isnt ideal. I dont have the Dual Knit Band, so that might help, but as it was, I watched the game in spurts. I took it off after the first three innings and then returned to it whenever there was a runner in scoring position. Theres also the issue of eye strain. I have prescription lenses for the Vision Pro, which could exasberate the issue, but my eyes quicky get tired when using Vision Pro. This was compounded by the sheer immersiveness of the picture that didnt give my eyes and time to rest. But Im already looking forward to the next game on Friday between the LA Angels and Pittsburgh Pirates. Its a shame Vision Pro is so expensive, because every baseball fan should get to experience it. Maybe Apple can sell Vision Pro tickets next season and start sell hot dogs at the Apple Store.

Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman today further outlined what to expect from the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 set to be unveiled on September 9 . While it was initially rumored that Touch ID may be coming to the Apple Watch this year, Gurman reiterated that he does not expect the Series 12 or Ultra 4 to have any major design changes compared to the current Series 11 and Ultra 3 models. Gurman does expect a ceramic case option to return for the Apple Watch Series 12. Today, he revealed that Apple has tested both white and dark gray ceramic case options, like those offered for the highest-end Apple Watch Series 3 in 2017. Another sketchy rumor claimed that the Series 12 would have a band with an embedded health sensor , but Gurman did not mention that. Apple has internally prototyped, tested, and considered launching an Apple Pencil for the upcoming foldable iPhone, according to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman . On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show , we discuss the new Mac mini and Mac Studio , the M6 and M5 Ultra chips, and invites to Apple's September event. Subscribe to The MacRumors Show YouTube channel for more videos Apple confirmed on Wednesday that its annual iPhone event will take place on Wednesday, September 9 at Apple Park , starting at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, with select members of the media invited to attend. The event's tagline is Surprise and Shine. Apple is expected to introduce at least six new products , including the the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, iPhone 18 Pro , iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first foldable iPhone. Pre-orders should follow shortly after, and along with release dates for iOS 27 , iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate. Apple announced the new Mac mini on Tuesday, offering M6 and M5 Pro chip options. The machine gains an N1 networking chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and moves to 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, up from 1Gb, with a 10Gb option. Thunderbolt 5 is restricted to the M5 Pro model, which gets three Thunderbolt 5 ports while the M6 model keeps Thunderbolt 4. Genlock support over USB-C also helps to sync a display's refresh timing to a camera such as the iPhone 17 Pro . Pricing starts at $899 with 16GB and 256GB, rising to $1,699 for the M5 Pro at 24GB and 512GB. Pre-orders are now open , with launch on September 22. The M6 is Apple's first 2nm chip . Its 12-core CPU is split into 2 super cores, 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores, making it the first Apple chip to combine all three core types in one design. Super cores are Apple's top tier, optimized for single-threaded speed. The 12-core GPU features a Neural Accelerator in each core for the first time in a Mac mini. The GPU also adds an updated shader architecture, Dynamic Caching, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, while an all-new Dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles peak compute over the previous generation, with system frameworks able to drive both engines at once. Memory starts at 16GB and tops out at 32GB, running at up to 170GB/s. M5 Pro scales further, to an 18-core CPU, a 20-core GPU and up to 64GB at 307GB/s. The new Mac Studio arrived alongside the Mac mini, with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chip options. The M5 Max offers an 18-core CPU with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores, an up-to-40-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in every core, and up to 128GB of memory at 614GB/s, with the GPU running up to 50% faster than the previous generation. Both configurations move to a next-generation SSD architecture on PCIe Gen 6 for up to twice the storage performance, and gain up to six Thunderbolt 5 ports at 120Gb/s, and the same genlock support as the Mac mini. Apple's N1 chip also brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to the Mac Studio. Pricing starts at $2,499 for the M5 Max at 36GB and 512GB, and $5,499 for the M5 Ultra at 96GB and 1TB, with the 512GB memory option not arriving until late October. The M5 Ultra is Apple's first quad-die chip , using a next-generation version of UltraFusion to join two dual-die M5 Max chips into a single processor. The result is a CPU with up to 36 cores, 12 super and 24 performance, delivering 1.25x the single-threaded and 1.3x the multithreaded performance of the M3 Ultra. Its up-to-80-core GPU is the most powerful Apple silicon GPU ever made and the first on an Ultra chip to feature Neural Accelerators. Second-generation Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading and third-generation ray tracing lift graphics up 40% over the M3 Ultra, and the chip features a 32-core Neural Engine. Memory reaches 512GB at 1.2TB/s, which is a 50% bandwidth increase. Other announcements this week included a new, softer Apple Polishing Cloth at $9, down from $19, and refreshed U.S. Magic Keyboards for the Mac, now featuring glyphs instead of edge text. Apple TV Buys an Existing Hit for the First Time Ever

Apple TV has bought the worldwide rights to Small Prophets, breaking with how it normally operates in acquiring an existing English-language hit rather than commissioning a show of its own from the start. Apple TV has typically developed or, at the very least, commissioned shows in-house and given them their premiere on the service, regardless of where they may eventually end up. This was the model behind the BBC's Trying, which Apple TV+ produced first and later licensed to the BBC once its own run had finished. Apple has also picked up individual foreign-language titles in the past, such as the French-Japanese drama Drops of God. Small Prophets marks new ground since it is an English-language series and it had already become a broadcast hit elsewhere before Apple stepped in. The acquisition, reported by Deadline , follows a run on BBC Two that produced the strongest 28-day launch numbers for a comedy on the channel since 2022, a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the International Panorama award at this year's Series Mania festival. Small Prophets will stream on Apple TV worldwide starting on October 7, with the exception of the UK, where the show debuted on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two earlier this year. Viewers in the UK will be able to continue watching it on iPlayer before it eventually moves to Apple TV. The show is written, created, and directed by Mackenzie Crook, best known for appearing in The Office and The Detectorists. Small Prophets follows Quigley as the eccentric Michael Sleep, an ordinary man who, since his darling Clea disappeared seven years ago, has worked in a DIY store, while visiting his elderly dad Brian and hoping for Clea to return. One day, Brian shares an old recipe for a potion so a skeptical Michael can create homunculi magical spirits that can predict the future to learn if he will see Clea again. Pre-orders of Apple's iPhone 18 Pro may not open until Saturday, September 12, a day later than the company's usual schedule, according to a new report. Apple is set to hold its annual iPhone event on Wednesday, September 9, where the iPhone 18 Pro models, its first-ever foldable iPhone, and the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are all expected to be announced. Under Apple's typical launch plan, pre-orders begin the Friday immediately following the event, with devices shipping the following Friday. This year, that would place pre-orders on Friday, September 11, but Macworld reports that its German sister publication, Macwelt , has heard from a reliable source that Apple will instead push pre-orders back to Saturday, September 12. There is precedent for this as the shift is reportedly tied to the date itself. September 11, 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and Apple has moved pre-orders away from that date before. Apple's annual fall event takes place on Wednesday, September 9, when it is expected to unveil new iPhone 18 Pro models, the first foldable iPhone, an Apple Watch Series 12, a fourth-generation Apple Watch Ultra, and potentially AirPods 5. Apple may also make some additional new products available at its Surprise and shine event, but there are a handful of rumored upcoming devices that we don't expect to make an appearance this month. To help set expectations ahead of Apple's Surprise and shine event, here are the products that Apple is unlikely to announce in September, but rather later on in the year or in 2027. iPhone 18 Strange as it sounds, Apple's fall event this year will be missing a new regular iPhone. The successor to the iPhone 17 isn't expected until spring next year, as part of Apple's reported split-launch strategy . Going forward, Apple will dedicate its annual September event to its more expensive Pro-model iPhones and successive generations of its upcoming foldable iPhone. The iPhone 18 could adopt Apple's upcoming 2-nanometer A20 chip. As for memory, information is mixed. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the device to have 9GB of RAM , 1GB more than the iPhone 17, while analyst Jeff Pu believes Apple will upgrade it with 12GB . If the iPhone 18 is limited to 9GB RAM, it will not support all Apple Intelligence features . All iPhone 18 models could include a 24-megapixel front-facing camera , up from 18 megapixels. There are reports that Apple will use an improved display , which could also feature a smaller Dynamic Island . iPhone Air 2 The iPhone Air that came out in September 2025 alongside the iPhone 17 lineup didn't sell as well as expected, and a second version is no longer believed to be coming in September 2026. Despite some debate about the future of the iPhone Air, the latest rumors suggest a new model is still in development, and will likely arrive in spring 2027 alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. Apple is said to be adding a second camera to the next iPhone Air to make it more appealing to consumers and to justify its $999 starting price. Apple also wants to improve battery life, either through an increased battery size or improvements to efficiency. Given that the design of the new model is similar to the current design, there may not be room for a larger battery. The device will use an A20 Pro chip built on Apple's new 2nm process, so it could feature better efficiency. New Apple Watch SE 4 The current Apple Watch SE 3 is Apple's most affordable Apple Watch option. Apple updated it in September 2025, but we are not expecting a new model in 2026, and there's no word yet on when a new version is coming. New Macs Apple reportedly plans to release an updated 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip in late 2026, followed by a major high-end MacBook Pro redesign in late 2026 or early 2027. Reportedly dubbed MacBook Ultra , the new 14-inch and 16-inch models are expected to feature M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, an OLED display, a touch screen, a Dynamic Island, and a thinner design. Apple is also said to be readying new iMac models with an upgraded chip and new color options. The new version is likely to be an updated 24-inch model with an M6 chip, replacing the existing M4 model that arrived in October 2024. While it isn't impossible, we're unlikely to see any Macs debut on September 9. Apple typically uses its fall event to focus on new iPhone and Apple Watch models. The company usually unveils new Macs in October via press release or a separate event. Possibly, Maybe In addition to new iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple Watch models, and AirPods, Apple is expected to prepare other products for release this year. Macworld Earlier this week, Apple surprised us with a brand-new Mac Studio powered by an M5 Ultra processor and up to 512GB of RAM. We expect that option, which wont be available until late October, will cost upwards of $15,000. That in itself will limit its availability to a very small percentage of Mac users. On top of that, given the 10- to 12-week backorder for the 256GB model just days after its release, we dont expect many people to actually get their hands on it anytime soon. So the people who try to buy one will be a very small group. It would stand to reason that people in that small group would be perfect candidates for Apples new Upgrade program , which lets you lease Macs for either 24 or 36 months and then upgrade to a new model once all payments have been made. However, Apple and Klarna, the financial partner for the program, have seemingly set up nearly impossible terms for qualification. There are numerous social media reports of people who have been declined for M5 Ultra Mac Studio leases, so I tried to get one and failed several times, with the following message: Klarna could not approve your application. Thank you for your interest in Apple Upgrade. Klarna was unable to approve your application at this time. Details about this decision will be sent to the email registered with your Klarna account. Your order wasnt placed and you havent been charged. If youd still like to proceed with your order, you can continue shopping with a different payment option. Your device selections have been saved, but you may need to make a few of your decisions again. I was also denied a lease for a fully decked-out 16-inch MacBook Pro, so its not limited to the Mac Studio. It just be noted that its been several hours and I havent received an email with any more details from Klarna. Its unclear why the system seems to be denying purchases of $10,000 or more. Klarna doesnt run a credit check, and approvals are often made within seconds for iPhones or iPads. But if youre looking to lease a very expensive Mac, you might be out of luck.

Which to Choose? Apple no longer sells the M4 Max or M3 Ultra models, which became relatively poor value for money by the end of their run. The M4 Max cost $2,499 with a 14-core CPU and up to 64GB of memory. For the same price, the M5 Max has an 18-core CPU, 614GB/s memory bandwidth, up to 128GB of memory, twice-fast storage, and WiFi 7. The M3 Ultra ended at $5,299 with a 96GB memory limit. For $200 more, the M5 Ultra brings back 256GB and 512GB options and adds 50% more memory bandwidth. Current M4 Max and M3 Ultra owners generally do not need to upgrade after only 17 months. Launch buyers paid $1,999 or $3,999, so replacing their machine now costs 2538% more for the same design, ports, Ultra core limits, storage limit, and Media Engine. The main exception is AI-heavy work. Local LLMs, on-device image or video generation, and demanding machine-learning tasks in applications like DaVinci Resolve or Nuke can benefit substantially from the new Neural Accelerators. The M5 Ultra's 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth can also improve large-model token generation. The upgrade makes more sense for M1 or M2 Mac Studio owners. Apple says the M5 Max can process prompts up to 10.7 faster than the M1 Max , while the M5 Ultra can train ML models up to 15.4 faster than the M1 Ultra . Older models also lack Thunderbolt 5, AV1 decoding, and the newer Media Engine. If you already skipped the 2025 refresh, this is a more meaningful step forward. The 2025 models are mainly worth considering used or refurbished at a steep discount. Apple raised prices in June, so lightly discounted older stock is often too close in price to a new model. One notable exception is an M3 Ultra with 256GB or 512GB of memory, since those configurations were unavailable new for much of 2026 and M5 Ultra equivalents will not ship until later this year. When configuring, buyers should remember that memory and graphics are linked. The M5 Max always has an 18-core CPU, so the key choices are GPU and memory. More than 36GB of memory requires the 40-core GPU. With the M5 Ultra, 512GB of memory requires the 80-core GPU. If memory is your limit, as it often is for local AI tasks, you may need to pay for more GPU cores too. Apple says the 512GB M5 Ultra arrives in late October , with pricing expected to start above $10,000. The M5 Ultra is now Apple's highest-end Mac. While its not available until September 22, Apples online ordering system still guarantees youll get it on that date, even with the highest memory and storage options. Thats about a month earlier than some of the longest estimates for the previous M4 model. So naturally, anyone who had an M4 on backorder would want to upgrade to the new model. The good news is you dont have toApple is already doing it for you. Numerous accounts on social media have shared an email from Apple regarding their M4 Mac mini orders: Thank you for your recent Mac order. We know youre looking forward to receiving your purchase.
