NC directs all MLAs, MPs to reach Delhi by July 19 for statehood protest
Srinagar, July 15: The National Conference (NC) high command has directed all its Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) to reach New Delhi by July 19 to participate in the party's proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20, sources said. According to the directions issued by the party leadership, all legislators have been asked to ensure their presence in the national capital without waiting for formal permission or any further communication. The protest, announced by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and NC Vice President Omar Abdullah, is aimed at intensifying the party's demand for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. During a recent address at Hazratbal, Omar Abdullah said the National Conference had pursued the issue of statehood through dialogue for nearly two years but was now compelled to adopt a democratic and peaceful mode of protest as the promise of restoring statehood remained unfulfilled. NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah has invited 52 leaders, including prominent politicians from across the country, to participate in the July 20 protest on the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon session, in a bid to build wider political support for the demand for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. Chandrashekar Rao, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, J&K Apni Party Chief Altaf Bukhari, J&K Congress chief G A Mir, J&K BJP president Satpal Sharma, Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone, cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and J&K Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam.
