Congress protests FIR against Rahul Gandhi over purification ritual remarks
Swara Bhasker has revisited the controversy surrounding her 2018 open letter to filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali after watching Padmaavat. Years after the films release, Swara explained that the debate around her letter largely focused on one particular line, while the broader concerns she raised about women, sexual violence and the portrayal of jauhar received less attention. Speaking at an event hosted by the India International Centre (IIC) in Delhi, Swara recalled her reaction to the films climax. Padmaavat, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, was released in January 2018 following months of controversy. Inspired by Malik Muhammad Jayasis 16th-century epic poem Padmavat, the film revolves around Rani Padmavati and the conflict between Rajput ruler Ratan Singh and Alauddin Khilji. Swara said the depiction of jauhar, in which hundreds of women collectively die by self-immolation, made her question the message being conveyed to survivors of sexual violence. Im watching this, these 800 women committing jauhar, and I was like, yaar, if I had been, God forbid, if I was a rape survivor, what is this film telling me? I would feel like a coward, that I didnt kill myself to save my honour. Is that what you want to tell in a society like ours, where I feel like theres anyway a rape epidemic? she said. She further questioned the connection between a womans life and the idea of sexual purity. Is this what we want to tell our survivors, that you didnt deserve to live? That if you actually had been honourable and brave women, you would have killed yourself. Are we saying that rape is the end of a womans life? she said. Swara also recalled being particularly disturbed by a close-up of a pregnant woman during the jauhar sequence. And then there was that one shot, it made me so mad, I was like, chiii, in the audience loudly. There is a close-up of a pregnant womans belly. And she is going, so youre saying that a foetus that might be female doesnt deserve to be born, because she might be raped by a Muslim ruler? she said. The actor clarified that she did not write her open letter immediately after watching the film. Instead, she waited five days to reflect on her response. And then I came out and I was like this is terrible. And normally people think that I do these things out of rage. But I waited for five days. And I was like, let me check if I still feel like this. And then at the end of five days, I wrote this letter, she recalled. Published by The Wire in January 2018, the letter questioned the glorification of jauhar and the portrayal of womens worth through sexual purity. Swara said the subsequent discussion, however, focused heavily on one phrase from the letter. I just want to say that when it got published, there was one line in the letter where I was trying to say that women are more than their private parts. And watching this film made me feel that Im reduced to a vagina, she said. Bhumi Pednekar has spoken out following the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl inside a moving sleeper bus in the Delhi-NCR region. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of women and minors while travelling on private buses. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken cognisance of the case. Bhumi addressed the incident through her Instagram Stories on Monday. Questioning how such cases continue to occur despite repeated discussions about womens safety, she wrote, How can we see this happen again and again and again! Shame! According to a Hindustan Times report, Delhi Police arrested the driver and conductor of a sleeper bus for allegedly gang-raping the minor. Police said the teenager, a Class 11 student from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly misled into boarding the bus in Greater Noida earlier this month. The accused allegedly drove her across different parts of Delhi-NCR before abandoning her near Kashmere Gate. The case has also resulted in a jurisdictional dispute between the police forces of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. UP Police have alleged that Delhi Police did not inform them about the incident despite the alleged assault taking place within the Gautam Buddh Nagar Commissionerate area. According to Delhi Police, the teenager had left her home on August 3 without informing her parents after being reprimanded by her mother over her studies. She was travelling to her cousins residence in Sector 63, Noida. Police said the girl accidentally got down at Pari Chowk after it became dark and heavy rain began. She reportedly signalled to an approaching bus for help, following which the conductor allegedly told her that the bus was headed towards Sector 63. She boarded the vehicle, where police said there were no other passengers. The conductor allegedly behaved inappropriately with her after the bus started moving. Police alleged that both the driver and conductor sexually assaulted the teenager and threatened to kill her when she resisted. Following the complaint, Delhi Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The girl underwent a medical examination, which confirmed the assault. Investigators used CCTV footage and other information to trace the bus to a parking area in Timarpur, north Delhi. The vehicle was seized and sent for forensic examination. The teenager was subsequently produced before the Child Welfare Committee and, following its directions, handed over to her father. On the work front, Bhumi was last seen in Daldal, where she portrayed DCP Rita Ferreira, a police officer investigating a series of murders in Mumbai while dealing with a troubled past. The series, based on Vish Dhamijas bestselling novel Bhendi Bazaar, is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Before Daldal, Bhumi appeared in films including Mere Husband Ki Biwi, Khel Khel Mein and Bhakshak. Govt failed to deliver on peoples mandate: Hakeem Yaseen
Srinagar, Aug 31: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) President and former Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Monday criticised the government for allegedly failing to address the concerns of the people despite receiving a massive mandate, saying that the past two years have not brought the expected relief or development to the public. Addressing various delegations from Budgam district, Yaseen said that people had voted with great expectations, but the government has failed to deliver on its promises. It has been two years since the government received a massive mandate, but people are still waiting for tangible action on issues concerning their daily lives, he said. Yaseen said political statements, blaming games and taking credit for ongoing projects would not resolve the problems confronting the people. He alleged that successive governments had failed to safeguard the interests of Jammu and Kashmir and said all political parties were responsible for selling power projects, water and other resources while leaving the people to face hardships. He expressed concern over the difficulties faced by farmers and horticulturists due to flash floods, heavy rains, hailstorms and other weather-related incidents. He said many farmers suffered extensive crop losses, but adequate compensation had not been provided by the concerned Agriculture and Horticulture departments. Yaseen also alleged that there was a lack of accountability in the functioning of various departments. Referring to reports of spurious and substandard pesticides being sold in the market, he demanded strict inspections and a time-bound investigation to identify those responsible.

Janmashtami 2026 is one of the most important festivals dedicated to Lord Krishna. Devotees celebrate the birth of Bal Gopal, lovingly known as Kanha, by performing midnight prayers, offering sweets and preparing special bhog. Traditionally, 56 different food items, known as Chhappan Bhog, are offered to Lord Krishna on Janmashtami. However, if preparing all 56 dishes is not possible, devotees are traditionally advised to offer five important offerings with devotion. 5 Main Bhog Offered to Lord Krishna 1. Makhan-Mishri Makhan-Mishri (fresh butter mixed with sugar crystals) is considered one of Lord Krishna's favourite offerings. Since Krishna is popularly associated with his love for butter, offering Makhan-Mishri is considered especially auspicious on Janmashtami. 2. Dhaniya Panjiri Dhaniya Panjiri, prepared using coriander powder along with other ingredients, is a traditional Janmashtami prasad. It holds a special place in many households and is commonly prepared for the festival. 3. Panchamrit Panchamrit is prepared by combining five ingredientsmilk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. It is traditionally used during the abhishek of Lord Krishna and is also offered as prasad. 4. Makhan-Mishri Peda or Makhana Kheer Milk-based sweets such as Peda or Makhana Kheer are also commonly offered to Bal Gopal. Devotees can choose an offering according to their family traditions and convenience. 5. Charanamrit and Tulsi Leaves Tulsi leaves (Tulsi Dal) hold special significance in Vaishnav traditions. Devotees traditionally place a Tulsi leaf with Krishna's bhog, as Tulsi is considered especially dear to Lord Vishnu and Krishna. Why Is Chhappan Bhog Offered to Krishna? According to a popular religious tradition, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Braj from torrential rains caused by Indra. It is believed that Krishna held the hill aloft for seven days and remained without food during this period. After the rain stopped, the people of Braj expressed their gratitude by preparing 56 varieties of food for him. The number 56 is traditionally associated with the eight daily periods (prahars) multiplied by seven days: 7 8 = 56. This is considered one of the traditional explanations behind the practice of offering Chhappan Bhog. What Is Included in Chhappan Bhog? The 56 offerings can include a wide variety of traditional dishes, sweets, fruits and beverages. Some commonly mentioned categories include: Grains and savoury foods: Kachori, puri, samosa, mathri and bhujia. Sweets: Ghevar, rasgulla, peda, barfi, malpua, rasmalai, jalebi and halwa. Beverages: Lassi, buttermilk, shikanji, milk and rabri. Fruits and dry fruits: Cashews, almonds, pistachios, raisins, makhana and seasonal fruits. In many households, devotees worship Krishna in his child form, known as Laddu Gopal. It is traditionally believed that serving and worshipping Krishna brings happiness, peace and prosperity to the home. Bringing certain sacred items into the house before Janmashtami is also considered auspicious. These are not merely decorative objects but are regarded as symbols of devotion and seva. 1. Wooden Flute at Home Bringing a flute associated with Lord Krishna home before Janmashtami and placing it in the puja room is considered auspicious. The flute is traditionally associated with love, sweetness and harmony. It can be placed near Laddu Gopal or in another clean and respectful place in the home. Devotees are advised to treat the flute as a sacred symbol rather than simply a decorative item. Keeping it near Krishna during worship is believed to enhance the devotional atmosphere and bring a sense of peace and harmony to the household. 2. Cow and Calf Idol or Picture Lord Krishna has a deep association with cows and the tradition of Gau Seva. Bringing home an idol or picture depicting a cow and calf before Janmashtami is considered auspicious. It is traditionally associated with family happiness, nourishment and prosperity. The idol can be placed near Krishna in the puja area. The tradition also encourages devotees to cultivate respect and compassion towards cows. If choosing a picture, it should similarly be placed in a clean and respectful location rather than treated merely as home dcor. 3. Shri Yantra Devotees can worship Lakshmi-Narayan before or on Janmashtami. According to religious belief, seeking the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi is associated with peace, prosperity and stability in the household. A Shri Yantra may also be brought home and placed in a clean puja area. It is traditionally regarded as a symbol associated with prosperity and abundance. Simply purchasing a yantra is not considered enough in traditional practice. Devotion, regular worship, cleanliness and lighting a diya are regarded as important parts of the practice. 4. Tulsi Plant If there is no Tulsi plant at home, bringing one home before Janmashtami and caring for it regularly is considered highly auspicious. Tulsi is traditionally regarded as Vishnu Priya, or beloved of Lord Vishnu. Its worship is associated with auspiciousness, well-being and prosperity. Place the plant in a clean location and care for it regularly. Remove dried leaves and ensure the plant receives appropriate sunlight and water. Tulsi also holds a special place in Krishna worship, and offering Tulsi leaves as part of bhog is an important devotional tradition. 5. Pure Cow Ghee for the Puja Lighting a ghee diya during Janmashtami worship is considered a sattvic and auspicious practice. Devotees can keep pure cow ghee at home in preparation for the festival. Ghee is traditionally associated with purity, light and auspiciousness. A ghee diya can be lit during the midnight worship, around the traditional time associated with Krishna's birth.
