Ganga Aarti on the Thames: When an ancient Indian river ritual finds a new meaning in London
Highlights: Ganga Aarti comes to the Thames on 13 September in Greenwich. The ceremony is rooted in gratitude, prayer and reverence for nature. The Ganga and Thames connect heritage, memory and a sense of home. Thousands are expected to gather for the Ceremony of Light. The event brings an ancient tradition into a distinctly London setting. For generations, the Ganga has been much more than a river. She is revered as a mother, a source of life and a sacred presence, woven into Hindu traditions, pilgrimage, prayer and family memory. Along her banks, people gather to offer lamps, sing devotional songs and express gratitude for the river and the natural world. On Sunday 13 September, that ancient tradition will find a new setting on the banks of the Thames. At the historic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, thousands are expected to gather for Ganga Aarti on the Thames: A Ceremony of Light, presented by Chinmaya Mission UK in collaboration with Totally Thames. The event will be one of the largest Ganga Aarti ceremonies held in the UK. But the significance of the evening goes beyond the visual beauty of illuminated lamps beside the river. It raises a simple but profound question: What does it mean to honour the spirit of the Ganga beside the Thames? Why Ganga Aarti is performed Ganga Aarti is a traditional Hindu ceremony centred on the offering of light. During the ritual, large multi-tiered oil lamps are raised towards the river as prayers, music and chanting accompany the ceremony. The gesture is one of gratitude. The river is understood not merely as water flowing through a landscape, but as a giver of life. The ceremony acknowledges the forces of nature that sustain human existence and expresses reverence for something larger than the individual. The Ganga carries particular spiritual significance in Hinduism. She is associated with purity, renewal and the flow of life. For generations, her banks have been places of pilgrimage, worship, remembrance and celebration. Yet the central idea behind Ganga Aarti, gratitude towards nature, is not limited to one river or one country. That is what gives the Thames ceremony its meaning. When two rivers meet The Ganga and the Thames could hardly seem more different. One flows through the heart of the Indian subcontinent and has been central to Hindu civilisation for thousands of years. The other winds through London, passing historic landmarks and becoming part of the everyday landscape of one of the world's great cities. Yet rivers share something fundamental: they connect people to place. The Thames is part of London's identity. It has witnessed generations of migration, change and renewal. For many families living in Britain, the river has become part of the landscape of everyday lifejust as the Ganga remains embedded in memories of India. Bringing Ganga Aarti to the Thames therefore creates a meeting point between two worlds. It is not an attempt to recreate Varanasi or Haridwar in London. Nor is the Thames being presented as a replacement for the Ganga. Instead, the ceremony carries the idea behind Ganga Aarti to another river: that water, nature and the environment deserve gratitude and respect wherever we encounter them. That principle is reflected in an important detail of the event. Nothing from the ceremony will be placed into or released into the Thames. The lamps will be held ceremonially towards the river, allowing the ritual to take place without compromising the waterway. A living tradition in a London landscape The setting adds another layer to the ceremony. The Old Royal Naval College is one of London's most recognisable historic sites. Against its architecture and the Thames, the glow of traditional lamps will create a striking meeting of Indian heritage and British surroundings. There will also be cultural performances, live music and activities designed to explain the meaning of the Aarti before the main Ceremony of Light at 7:15 pm. The occasion forms part of global celebrations marking 75 years of Chinmaya Mission, honouring the work of its founder, Swami Chinmayananda. His teachings helped bring Vedantathe philosophical tradition of Hindu thoughtto audiences around the world. In that sense, the river becomes a fitting metaphor. Water flows across boundaries, just as ideas, traditions and stories travel from one generation and one country to another. As the lamps are raised towards the Thames at dusk, the ceremony will bring an ancient Indian tradition into a distinctly London setting. The Ganga will be present through its symbolism, memory and spiritual meaning. The Thames will be present as the river beside which the ceremony unfolds. And between them lies the heart of the evening: a reminder that traditions can travel without losing their meaning, and that gratitude for the natural world belongs wherever people gather beside a river.

How to Choose Best Probiotic Supplement for Bloating & Gas?
Ram Charan That tight, swollen feeling after meals is one of the most common digestive complaints people search for help with, and it sends most of them straight to a search bar typing some version of est probiotic supplement for bloating and gas. The problem is that the answer isn't one product. It's a set of criteria, and most buying guides skip straight to product names without explaining what actually separates an effective probiotic supplement for bloating & gas from a bottle of capsules that does very little. This guide breaks down exactly what to check before you buy: strains, CFU count, delivery technology, prebiotic support, and formulation quality. It also looks at how the current crop of probiotic brands, in India and globally, stack up against each other, so you know what a genuinely well-built product looks like before you compare prices. Why Bloating and Gas Occur? Bloating and gas are usually signs of an imbalance in the gut microbiome, the community of trillions of bacteria that live in your digestive tract and help break down food. When the ratio of beneficial to non-beneficial bacteria shifts, a condition often called dysbiosis, digestion slows down and food ferments longer in the gut, producing excess gas. Diet, stress, antibiotic use, and irregular eating patterns all disturb this balance. A well-formulated probiotic for bloating and gas works by reintroducing specific beneficial bacterial strains that may help restore that balance and support smoother digestion. Not every probiotic is built for this job, though, which is exactly why strain selection matters more than marketing claims. What to Check Before You Buy a Probiotic Supplement 1. Strain Specificity, Not Just Probiotic on the Label The single biggest mistake buyers make is assuming all probiotics are interchangeable. Different strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium do different jobs. Strains studied specifically for bloating and gas relief, such as certain Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium lactis varieties, have shown promise in clinical research for reducing abdominal discomfort. A label that lists specific strain names, not just genus and species, is a stronger signal of a well-researched formulation than one that says probiotic blend with no further detail. 2. CFU Count and Potency at Expiry CFU, or colony-forming units , measures how many live bacteria are in each dose. Most gut-health formulations fall somewhere between 10 billion and 60 billion CFU. Higher isn't automatically better; consistency matters more. Check whether the CFU count is guaranteed at the time of manufacture or at expiry, since potency naturally declines over the shelf life of the product. Brands that guarantee CFU count through the expiry date, rather than only at the moment of packaging, are generally more transparent about what you're actually getting. 3. Delivery Technology That Survives Stomach Acid Live bacteria have to survive the acidic environment of the stomach to reach the intestines where they're needed. Delayed-release capsules, enteric coatings, or encapsulation technology designed to protect bacteria through digestion matter as much as the strain itself. A high-CFU probiotic with no protective delivery system may lose most of its potency before it ever reaches the gut. 4. Prebiotic Support Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers, like inulin or chicory root, that feed the beneficial bacteria already present and introduced by a probiotic. A formulation that pairs probiotics with prebiotics is generally considered more complete, since the bacteria have a food source to support their activity in the gut rather than working in isolation. Also Read: Triphala for Gas and Bloating 5. Third-Party Testing and Manufacturing Standards Because supplements aren't as tightly regulated as pharmaceuticals, third-party testing for purity and potency is one of the clearest trust signals available. Look for GMP-certified manufacturing and lab verification that confirms the product contains what the label claims, at the potency claimed. 6. Formulation Fit for Your Symptoms Bloating tied to occasional dietary triggers is different from bloating linked to IBS or chronic digestive discomfort. Some formulations combine probiotics with digestive enzymes to target hard-to-digest foods directly, while others focus purely on rebalancing gut flora over time. Matching the formulation type to your specific symptom pattern, rather than picking the highest-rated product blindly, tends to produce better results. 7. Look for Authentic, Transparent Brands Choose probiotic brands that clearly list their strains, CFU count, prebiotic ingredients, dosage, storage instructions, and manufacturing standards. Avoid products that rely only on vague claims like supports gut health without explaining what is actually inside the formula. Brands such as The Good Bug and Cosmix Wellness often use symptom-focused marketing around gut reset, sleep, and hormonal health. ZeroHarms probiotic capsules for bloating takes a broader approach by combining multiple probiotic strains with prebiotic inulin in one capsule. The best brands do more than promote benefits. They help buyers understand how to read the label and compare strain diversity, CFU strength, prebiotics, usage guidance, and overall product transparency. Frequently Asked Questions 1) How long does a probiotic supplement take to help with bloating? Some people notice changes within one to two weeks of consistent use. Mild temporary bloating may occur at first, but ongoing discomfort should be discussed with a healthcare professional. 2) Can a probiotic supplement make bloating worse? Yes, some people may experience temporary gas or bloating, especially during the first few days. The response can vary depending on the strains and the cause of the symptoms. 3) Is it better to take probiotics before or after a meal? This depends on the product and probiotic strain. Follow the label instructions, as some formulas are best taken with food while others may be taken before meals. 4) Do I need a probiotic supplement, or can diet alone help? A fibre-rich diet with fermented foods is the foundation of good gut health. Supplements may provide extra support when diet alone does not improve persistent digestive discomfort. Final Thoughts Choosing a probiotic supplement for bloating and gas is not about chasing the most popular product or the highest CFU count. The better approach is to compare strain quality, CFU transparency, delivery format, prebiotic support, and testing standards based on your individual digestive needs. A reliable supplement should clearly explain what it contains, how it works, and how it should be used. Combine it with a balanced, fibre-rich diet and consult a healthcare professional if bloating is persistent, severe, or linked to an underlying condition. Aquaguard joins TVFs Gram Chikitsalay Universe with two new branded content films
Eureka Forbes has extended its partnership with The Viral Fever (TVF) with a new branded content campaign featuring Aquaguard within the world of Gram Chikitsalay. The collaboration comprises two films that use the shows characters and narrative setting to highlight different aspects of the water purifier brand, including safe drinking water and its 4-Year Unconditional Warranty. The first film focuses on the importance of consuming safe drinking water. Set within the familiar Gram Chikitsalay universe, the story uses the shows humour and character dynamics to raise a question around the safety of drinking water before introducing Aquaguard as part of the conversation. The second film takes a different approach, focusing on the experience of owning an appliance. An unexpected repair bill becomes the starting point for a conversation around maintenance costs and the uncertainty associated with appliance ownership. The film subsequently highlights Aquaguards 4-Year Unconditional Warranty as a proposition aimed at offering consumers greater assurance during the ownership period. According to the company, the two films have been developed around situations that fit naturally within the Gram Chikitsalay universe rather than functioning as standalone product advertisements. The campaign attempts to address two different stages of the consumer journey the need for safe drinking water when considering a purchase and the assurance sought after bringing a product home. View this post on Instagram A post shared by TVF | The Viral Fever (@theviralfever) Commenting on the collaboration, Anurag Kumar, Chief Growth Officer, Eureka Forbes Limited, said, The strongest branded content partnerships are built on a clear intersection between consumer relevance and the cultural context in which a brand chooses to participate. Our intent with TVF was not simply to feature Aquaguard within an established entertainment property, but to identify narratives where the brand could have a meaningful role. These two films allow us to address different but equally important moments in the consumer journey, from the fundamental need for safe drinking water to the confidence consumers seek throughout the ownership experience. When the proposition is intrinsically connected to the story, branded content moves beyond visibility and becomes a more effective way of building relevance. On 23rd June 2000, this writer was waiting for a flight from Bangalore to Srinagar. In the lounge, I spotted a tall, graceful personality Mr. M.Y. Khan, Chairman, J&K Bank. We boarded together and destiny gave us seats together. For three hours, I poured my heart out. Khan Sahab, Radio Kashmir talks about Chinar, Kehwa, Saffron, Pashmina everything beautiful. But we never talk about the empty pocket of our farmer. We never tell our artisan that his shawl has a price in Paris. Our own bank J&K Bank is our pride, but for a common man in Kupwara, it still looks like a locked government office. Why doesnt J&K Bank itself tell its people what the Bank is and what does the Bank have for them? Mr. Khan did not just listen. He heard it. For the entire flight, we discussed only this. It was, as i later called it, love at first hear. As we landed at Srinagar, he held my hand and said: Rafeeq, come to Zam Zam, my office. The idea born in the air must get wings on the ground. A week later, in his chamber at ZamZam House, Corporate Headquarters, the idea got wings. And in that same chamber, another history was born the immortal tagline that became the voice of Kashmir: JAMMU & KASHMIR BANK BADHIYA, BE-NAZEER BANK It was not written by an ad agency. It was an emotion born in that room. Then it is history. Birth at Tagore Hall: 24th August 2001 For one full year, the format was worked out with my friends Qaiser Mirza and Air Voice Advertising. The brief was clear: No jargon. No preaching. Just 15 minutes of soulful conversation in Kashmiri, Urdu, Dogri and Gojri. Mr. M.Y. Khan showed rare vision. He approved it not as advertisement expense, but as Zimmedari Corporate Social Responsibility, long before the term became fashionable. The programme was formally launched on 24th August 2001 at Tagore Hall, Srinagar. The evening was doubly special it also had a Talha-Majboor comedy show. The Chief Guest was the then Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah, who blessed it saying, This is the best use of Radio. Next day, 26th August 2001, Sunday, the first episode went on air. I was sitting near my old Philips radio set at home, holding my breath. When I heard the words, my eyes were moist. A new chapter in Indian commercial broadcasting had begun. A team that never let it die A programme does not run for 25 years on one mans idea. It runs on a teams ishq. At Radio Kashmir, the early pillars were G.N. Rattanpuri, Late Bashir Shah, Late Ashraf Bhat, and Anjali Sharma at Jammu. In marketing and production Shakeel Bakshi, Zahoor Zahid, Meraj Din Ahmad, G.R. Akhoon, Wajih Siraj, Bashir Buch, Late Mansoor Ansari and Late Mustafa Ansari. Engineers Late Jamil Baksh, M.Y. Shah, A.K. Handoo, Irshad, Mushtaq supervised by Ayaz Malik, produced it free of cost in our studios. Initially, the Bank hired our studio. When I suggested to Khan Sahab that the Bank should have its own media team, he did it. He created it. And Sajad Bazaz, a brilliant Mass Communication pass-out, carried it brilliantly for years. The first trusted voices were Zahoor Zahid and Ms. Roohi Sultana. Later, fresh voices gave it new colour. 25 years ago the Bank was banking upon us for recording and editing, now it is fully self-sufficient with its own infrastructure. That journey itself is commendable. Through floods of 2014, earthquake of 2005, curfews, snowstorms, and COVID-19 when everything stopped, Radio did not stop. Tapes were recorded in makeshift rooms, but tape ready hai, Sir that call never missed. What did 15 minutes do? The format was simple but powerful: Aghaaz_ an opening note, Bank Aapke Ghar Par scheme explained in mother tongue, Sawal-Jawab listeners letters, and Kamyabi Ki Kahani the soul, a real success story. We never sold loans. We removed fear. We told people Bank se daro mat, Bank tumhara hai. Long before Delhi invented the slogan of Financial Inclusion, J&K Bank and Radio Kashmir were practicing it. The impact? Go to Shopian a farmer knows pledge finance. Go to Zaina Kadal a weaver knows export credit. Go to Rajouri a woman knows how to form a Self Help Group. That awareness was created in those 15 minutes. So much so that for three consecutive years, JK Bank Diary figured in the Balance Sheet and Annual Report presented to the Board and published in The Quest the Banks journal with a noting: Because of this programme, our credits have increased manifold and advances have touched skies. Khan Sahab, I only conceived it, you delivered it on the ground. Whose jubilee is it? If someone asks me today what is my biggest contribution in 40 years of broadcasting, I will say 15 minutes every week for 25 years. But this Silver Jubilee is not mine. It belongs to the listeners of Radio Kashmir that farmer from Anantnag who wrote, Loan ko Kashmiri mein samjhao, that mother from Bhaderwah who asked, Meri beti doctor banna chahti hai? It belongs to the clients of J&K Bank that boy from Baramulla who took Rs. 50,000 and became an exporter, that widow from Kishtwar who now employs 10 women, that student from Kupwara who is now a doctor in Delhi. And it belongs to the J&K Bank family from M.Y. Khan Sahab, my co-passenger who gave it wings mid-air, to every CMD thereafter, every Executive President, every Branch Manager and clerk who said, This programme must go on. Today, as a professional listener, I can say with pride JK Bank Diary still holds priority among listeners for knowledge, information and entertainment. It is still a high-ranking programme of Radio Kashmir. An archive request My only request on this Silver Jubilee is let these 1300 scripts be archived. They are not just scripts. They are the economic history of 25 years of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, told by its own people, in their own voice. And perhaps, the officers of All India Radio, the Bank and record keepers should note JK Bank Diary is perhaps the only programme in Indian broadcasting which holds a record as a commercial and revenue-generating creative for 25 years uninterrupted. If otherwise, please correct me. It started on 26.08.2001. It is still on. It is not a programme. It is a Rishta. A 25-year-old relationship between a Bank and its people, tuned in every week on radio waves. Shukriya listeners. Shukriya J&K Bank family. Shukriya M.Y. Khan Sahab. Dr. Rafeeq Masoodi IBS (Rtd), Former ADG, Doordarshan
