3 injured in separate bear attacks in Ganderbal, Kulgam

Three people were injured in separate bear attacks in Ganderbal and Kulgam districts on Tuesday. In Ganderbal, a 50-year-old man was injured in a bear attack in Watalbagh village of the Lar area, officials said. The injured was identified as Mohd Maqbool Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Watalbagh. Officials said the attack took place around 11 a.m. Bhat sustained injuries. He was shifted to District Hospital Ganderbal for treatment. The attack triggered concern among residents of Watalbagh and adjoining areas. Residents said wild animals were moving close to residential areas. They urged the Wildlife Department to intensify surveillance. They also sought preventive measures in vulnerable areas. Residents called for timely intervention and better safety measures. In Kulgam, two people were injured after a wild bear attacked a group working in an orchard in Ahmadabad village. The injured were identified as Abdul Salam Teeli of Ahmadabad and Bilal Ahmad Kholi of Danipora, DH Pora. Both were shifted to Sub-District Hospital Damhal Hanjipora. Officials said their condition was stable. Wildlife Control Room in-charge DH Pora, Syed Irshad, said a cage was installed in Ahmadabad village to trap the bear. There has also been a spurt in bear attacks across Kashmir. The ongoing apple harvest is drawing bears toward orchards and nearby villages. This has increased the chances of human-wildlife encounters. The attacks have raised concern among residents, who have sought stronger surveillance to prevent further attacks.
