Srinagar, September 2: The strike by MBBS and BDS intern doctors across Jammu & Kashmir entered its third day today, with interns continuing their peaceful protest at all Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) across the Union Territory and SKIMS Bemina. The interns are demanding an immediate enhancement of the internship stipend, which is currently 12,300 per month. On September 1, interns also organised peaceful candle marches within the campuses of GMCs across J&K and SKIMS Bemina, reiterating their demand for justice and an early resolution of the long-pending stipend issue. AIMSA representatives, including Dr Tasaduk, Dr Shahnawaz and Dr Faraz from SKIMS, Dr Akib GMC Anantnag said the government should immediately enhance the stipend instead of repeatedly stating that the file is under process. The representatives said that if their demands are not addressed, intern doctors are planning to go on a hunger strike in the coming days, while stressing that they have been waiting for a long time for the government to act. The demand was backed by AIMSA J&K In-charge Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, who urged the government to address the concerns of intern doctors and announce the stipend hike at the earliest. Srinagar, Sep 02: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration in Srinagar, pressing the BJP-led central government to fulfil its promises on restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees for the Union Territory. The protest, which was taken out towards the BJP headquarters here, saw NC workers raising slogans and carrying placards demanding the restoration of J&K's statehood a key promise made by the Centre both in Parliament and before the Supreme Court following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. If your game library is spread across Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, there is no single place that shows a complete picture. Your playtime, purchases, ratings, screenshots, and achievements are scattered between platforms that were never designed to work together. Minimap wants to become that missing layer. The South Korean service lets players connect accounts across the major gaming ecosystems and bring their histories into a unified profile . The immediate promise is simple: see more of your gaming life in one place, get recommendations based on games you actually played, and participate in a community built around games rather than general social-media noise. That is the part gamers should care about first. A player who spent 100 hours on Game X, completed Game Y, or rates narrative RPGs highly has a much clearer taste profile than someone who merely clicked on a genre tag. In theory, that should lead to better recommendations, more relevant discussion, and fewer generic you may also like suggestions. When I met Minimap chief global officer George Jeong in Pangyo (near Seoul), I asked the question that YOU would ask: why would a regular gamer install this? His answer was that people want to manage play records fragmented across several platforms, while also having a dedicated place to talk about games. That makes sense, but it also reveals Minimaps challenge. A unified profile is useful, but becoming a destination people open every day is much harder. The service works by asking users to voluntarily connect their gaming accounts. Minimap can then organize information such as owned games, playtime, ratings, and other activity into a personal profile, which is arguably a better user experience. This information can also make game discovery more personal. Rather than recommending a new game because it shares a broad category with something in your library, Minimap can look for more specific signals. A person who finished a difficult action game may be interested in another demanding title; a player who only sampled it for 20 minutes may not be. That distinction is where connected play history could be more useful than the basic preference systems offered by many storefronts. Minimap is also trying to make ratings more credible. The company has launched a service called Navicritic, which it says limits ratings to users who actually purchased and played a game. That does not eliminate arguments and disagreements about reviews: gaming communities will always find a way to have those, but it could reduce some of the noise from people rating a game they never touched. There is another user benefit: rewards. Minimap says people who choose to participate in sponsored activities can earn points, game keys, or playtest invitations. This is familiar territory for gamers, so the real question is whether the offers feel relevant and worthwhile. Minimaps business model begins where its consumer product becomes useful. Publishers and developers need low-friction ways to reach likely players for game launches, demo campaigns, pre-orders, surveys, and playtests. Minimaps pitch is that a game company can reach people according to actual, opt-in play histories. For example, a publisher could look for players who own a PS5 and rated NieR highly before promoting a related action title. Or a studio could recruit players who logged more than 100 hours in Hades II for feedback on a new game. The company says that matching runs on voluntarily connected play data and that personally identifiable information is not sold or shared with advertisers (source: Minimap for Business ). Minimap lists display advertising, newsletters, promotional events, offerwalls, user testing, focus groups, and PR as its commercial services. MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami backs protesting medical interns

Srinagar, Sep 1: CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, has extended his support to the ongoing protest by MBBS and BDS interns across Jammu and Kashmir and urged the government to immediately revise their monthly stipend, currently fixed merely at Rs 12,300, a figure that has remained unchanged for nearly six years. Interns at SKIMS Bemina, GMC Srinagar, GMC Jammu, GMC Anantnag and GMC Baramulla have been on an indefinite strike since August 31, demanding that the stipend be raised to Rs 30,000 a month. Tarigami, as per a statement, said the demand was neither excessive nor unreasonable but fair compensation for young doctors who are often the first to attend to patients in emergency wards and who routinely work shifts stretching to 24 or even 36 hours. These are young men and women who have spent years training to serve the sick, and today they stand on the roads instead of inside hospitals, because the system has failed to value their labour, he said. A stipend of Rs 12,300 a month, unchanged since 2019, insults the effort these interns put in every single day. He noted that a committee constituted by the Health and Medical Education Department in 2023 had itself recommended raising the stipend to around Rs 25,000, yet no formal order has followed. When your own committee tells you, the current amount is inadequate, and you still let the file gather dust for years, it stops being a matter of process and becomes a matter of will, he said. The strike also raises a larger question of equal work for equal pay, and the interns in J&K earn a fraction of what their counterparts receive in several other states despite comparable duties and training. He appealed to the Health and Medical Education Minister and the administration to treat the matter with urgency rather than assurances and to issue a formal revision order without further delay. Doctors who serve patients round the clock deserve dignity, not delay, Tarigami said, adding that continued inaction risked disrupting healthcare services across the Union Territory at the cost of ordinary patients who depend on government hospitals.

It is deeply concerning that medical interns across Jammu & Kashmir continue to receive one of the lowest stipends in the country, despite shouldering an enormous workload. Interns are routinely required to perform duties extending from 12 to 48 hours and, across J&K, are often denied even basic holidays and adequate leave, she said. She called upon the government to immediately initiate a meaningful dialogue with the protesting interns, resolve their concerns and enhance their stipend to Rs 30,000 without further delay. The government must also ensure that interns receive reasonable working conditions, adequate leave and basic protection commensurate with the demanding services they render, she said. The demand for a Rs 30,000 stipend is both reasonable and justified. Several states have already substantially revised their internship stipends upwards. Odisha and West Bengal provide around Rs 45,000, while Uttar Pradesh has increased its stipend from Rs 12,000 to Rs 25,000, with Bihar also having undertaken a revision, Iltija added. Young doctors serving in government hospitals cannot be expected to work 12- to 48-hour shifts without adequate holidays or benefits while being among the lowest-paid medical interns in the country. Their demand is legitimate, and the government must respond with urgency and sensitivity, she said. The government must seriously reconsider its priorities. At a time when substantial public resources are spent on lavish government programmes and activities, it is difficult to justify denying a modest and legitimate increase to young doctors who work round the clock to sustain the public healthcare system, the PDP leader added. The medical interns began their indefinite strike on Monday, seeking a higher stipend and better working conditions. Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Monday said the demand of the interns was already under consideration by the government and that they need not resort to strikes.

IndiaCanada Reset: Building a Partnership for a Fragmented World

The world is entering an era in which old certainties are disappearing faster than new arrangements are taking shape. The post-Cold War belief in an increasingly integrated global economy has given way to geopolitical competition, strategic protectionism, fractured supply chains and a renewed contest for technology, energy and critical minerals. Europe remains unsettled by war; West Asia continues to experience profound instability; the United States and China are locked in an increasingly consequential strategic and economic competition; and countries across the Global South are demanding a greater voice in the institutions that govern the international system. It is against this unsettled backdrop that the emerging IndiaCanada rapprochement deserves to be viewed. What is taking place between New Delhi and Ottawa is more than a diplomatic thaw. It has the potential to become an important example of how two democracies can move beyond a period of profound disagreement and construct a relationship based on economic complementarity, strategic autonomy and institutional dialogue. The timing could not be more consequential. The inaugural IndiaCanada Finance Ministers Economic and Financial Dialogue held in Toronto on August 27 has given the reset a concrete economic foundation. The two countries have set an aspiration to expand bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030, while India has expressed readiness to begin negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty. Cooperation is also being explored in financial technology, modern payment systems, cross-border remittances, capital markets and critical minerals. (Canada ) This is no longer diplomacy conducted primarily through statements. It is diplomacy being translated into institutions. From confrontation to strategic pragmatism IndiaCanada relations suffered a severe setback following Canadian allegations concerning the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. The resulting diplomatic confrontation damaged political trust and disrupted normal high-level engagement. The lesson from that difficult period should not be that India and Canada have incompatible interests. The opposite is true. Their interests are sufficiently complementary that prolonged estrangement carries a cost for both. A mature bilateral relationship does not require two countries to agree on every question. Democracies will inevitably have differences over law, security, foreign policy and domestic politics. What matters is whether those differences are managed through evidence, due process, diplomacy and institutional channels. Canada has a responsibility to uphold its constitutional commitments, the rule of law and freedom of expression. India has an equally legitimate responsibility to protect its national security, territorial integrity and citizens from terrorism and violent extremism. These principles need not be contradictory. The present reset represents an important recognition on both sides that disagreements should be contained within the relationship rather than allowed to define it. That is the essence of mature diplomacy. Canada is looking beyond dependence Canadas strategic circumstances have changed dramatically. For generations, the United States was the overwhelmingly dominant economic and strategic partner of Canada. Geographic proximity made this inevitable and economically advantageous. But the recent intensification of USCanada trade tensions has demonstrated the vulnerability inherent in excessive dependence on a single market. Prime Minister Mark Carneys government has therefore placed greater emphasis on economic diversification and building new international partnerships. Canadas present circumstances make that strategy not merely desirable but necessary. The breakdown of recent USCanada trade negotiations and escalating tariff tensions have added urgency to Ottawas diversification strategy. (Reuters ) India naturally assumes significance in this search for diversification. India is not simply a large consumer market. It is a major economic, technological and geopolitical power with a young population, expanding infrastructure, growing energy requirements and an increasingly important role in the Indo-Pacific and the Global South. Canada, meanwhile, possesses precisely those resources and capabilities that India increasingly needs: energy, critical minerals, agricultural commodities, advanced technology, capital, research capacity and access to North American markets. The relationship therefore offers a rare combination of complementarity and scale. Indias economic rise meets Canadas resource strength The next chapter in IndiaCanada relations should be built around economics. The recent Finance Ministers Dialogue demonstrates how rapidly the agenda is expanding. The two countries are looking at financial-sector cooperation, FinTech, capital markets, payment modernisation, cross-border remittances and merchant payments. Canada and India have also discussed expanding the use of Indias Unified Payments Interface in Canada. (Canada ) This is significant because modern diplomacy increasingly operates through economic infrastructure. A successful IndiaCanada economic relationship should encompass at least six strategic pillars. First, trade and investment. The proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement should provide predictable rules for businesses and investors and create a framework extending well beyond traditional merchandise trade. Second, critical minerals. Canadas resource base and Indias manufacturing ambitions create an obvious strategic partnership. Batteries, semiconductors, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and advanced technologies all depend upon secure mineral supply chains. Third, energy security. Indias enormous and growing energy requirements create opportunities for Canadian LNG, clean energy, nuclear cooperation and other energy technologies. Fourth, technology and artificial intelligence. Both countries possess strong technology ecosystems and substantial pools of highly educated talent. Collaboration in AI, cybersecurity, quantum technologies and digital infrastructure could produce benefits well beyond the bilateral relationship. Fifth, financial cooperation. Canadian pension funds and institutional investors already have substantial exposure to India. Canada has acknowledged the significance of its long-term institutional capital in Indias development, while both sides are examining ways to deepen engagement between financial institutions and investors. (Canada ) Sixth, education and human capital. Universities, research institutions and professional networks can provide the intellectual infrastructure for the partnership. A CEPA concluded without these broader dimensions would be an opportunity missed. The Finance Ministers Dialogue: diplomacy becoming architecture The August 2026 Finance Ministers Dialogue deserves particular attention because it represents a shift from episodic diplomacy towards institutionalised economic engagement. The dialogue was established following the commitment made by Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney during their March 2026 meeting. Both governments have committed themselves to concluding CEPA negotiations by the end of 2026. (Canada ) This institutionalisation matters. Relationships become resilient when they are supported by permanent mechanisms rather than dependent upon individual leaders or temporary political moods. The IndiaCanada relationship now needs precisely such institutional resilience. Regular finance, trade, defence, science, technology, consular and migration dialogues should become permanent features of the relationship. The two Prime Ministers June meeting at the G7 Summit already reflected this broader approach. They welcomed progress on economic cooperation, resilient supply chains, energy security and CEPA, while also agreeing to launch negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement and deepen defence and security cooperation. (PM of Canada ) That is a far more comprehensive relationship than the one that existed only a few years ago. The human bridge must become a strategic asset Perhaps the most extraordinary strength of IndiaCanada relations is the people-to-people connection. The Indian-origin community has become deeply embedded in Canadian economic, academic, cultural and political life. At the same time, Canada has developed generations of students, researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals with strong connections to India. This human bridge must be treated as an asset rather than a source of political contestation. Diaspora communities should never become instruments of geopolitical rivalry. Canadas commitment to multiculturalism and freedom of expression deserves respect. But freedom of expression cannot become a shield for incitement to violence or terrorism. Conversely, allegations of foreign interference or transnational repression must be investigated through credible evidence and due process rather than political rhetoric. The objective should be to create a relationship in which the Indian diaspora feels secure in Canada, and Canada feels confident that its institutions are respected by India. That is entirely achievable. Security cannot be separated from friendship No serious analysis of IndiaCanada relations can avoid the security question. India has consistently expressed concern about extremist and separatist activities emanating from Canadian soil. Canada has raised concerns regarding foreign interference and transnational repression. These concerns require dialogue, not denial. The two countries should establish a sustained senior-level security mechanism involving diplomatic, intelligence and law-enforcement agencies. Cooperation should focus on terrorism, organised crime, money laundering, extortion, cybercrime and violent extremism. The Kanishka tragedy remains a terrible reminder of what happens when terrorism transcends national boundaries. The principle should be universal: terrorism and political violence cannot be legitimised by ideology, ethnicity, religion or political grievance. India and Canada can disagree profoundly on many political matters and still cooperate against violence. Indeed, that is what mature democracies should do. Two middle powers, one changing world The deeper significance of this rapprochement lies in the character of the two countries. India and Canada are not superpowers. Neither seeks to dominate the international system. Both, however, possess substantial economic, diplomatic, technological and human capital. This makes them important middle powers. The emerging international system will increasingly depend upon such countries. India has pursued strategic autonomy, maintaining relationships with the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, the Gulf, Africa and the Global South. Canada is now attempting to diversify its external relationships while retaining its traditional partnerships. Their approaches are different, but their strategic requirement is increasingly similar: neither country wants its national interests to be determined entirely by the preferences of a larger power. This is where their partnership acquires a larger geopolitical meaning. India and Canada can help build a world of multiple partnerships rather than rigid blocs. The Indo-Pacific opportunity The Indo-Pacific provides another important area for convergence. India occupies a central strategic position in the Indian Ocean and is an essential actor in the Indo-Pacific. Canada, with its Pacific geography and expanding interest in the region, can become a constructive partner. Cooperation in maritime security, critical-mineral supply chains, infrastructure, clean energy, technology and freedom of navigation can strengthen the broader regional architecture. India has also supported Canadas engagement with the Indian Ocean Rim Association, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of Canadian participation in the wider Indo-Pacific framework. (PM of Canada ) The relationship should therefore not be confined to bilateral geography. It can become part of a larger Indo-Pacific strategy. From reset to strategic partnership The danger now is complacency. Diplomatic reconciliation can be fragile if it is not converted into institutional habits. India and Canada should therefore pursue a structured five-year roadmap. They should conclude CEPA with ambition and balance; begin serious investment-treaty negotiations; establish permanent financial and security dialogues; expand cooperation in critical minerals and energy; strengthen university and research partnerships; and create mechanisms for regular consultation between parliamentarians, businesses, civil society and diaspora representatives. The objective should be to ensure that no future bilateral disagreement can once again bring the entire relationship to a halt. The true test of diplomacy is not whether countries remain friendly when they agree. It is whether they remain engaged when they disagree. A partnership suited to the twenty-first century The IndiaCanada relationship should not be described merely as a return to normalcy. The old normal itself has disappeared. The international system today is more fragmented, more competitive and more uncertain. Economic security has become national security. Supply chains have become strategic assets. Technology has become a component of geopolitical power. Critical minerals have become as important to future economies as oil was to the industrial age. In such a world, countries need trusted partners across regions. India needs Canada for resources, capital, technology, education and access to North American markets. Canada needs India for economic diversification, a vast and growing market, technology partnerships, investment opportunities and a stronger connection with the Indo-Pacific. But both need something even more important: dependable democratic partnerships in an uncertain international environment. That is why the present IndiaCanada reset should be seen as an opportunity of historic proportions. The task before New Delhi and Ottawa is not to forget their disagreements. It is to develop the political maturity to prevent those disagreements from destroying the larger relationship. The future should move from estrangement to engagement, from episodic diplomacy to institutional partnership, from suspicion to evidence-based cooperation, and from limited commerce to comprehensive economic interdependence. If that transformation succeeds, India and Canada will have achieved something larger than a bilateral reconciliation. They will have demonstrated that democracies can disagree without becoming adversaries; that strategic autonomy does not mean strategic isolation; and that economic interdependence can coexist with national sovereignty. In a fragmented world, that lesson matters. The future international order will not be built only by the great powers. It will also be shaped by countries willing to create bridges across geopolitical divides. India and Canada have an opportunity to become such bridge-builders. Their relationship can be a model of what twenty-first-century diplomacy should look like: principled but pragmatic, sovereign but interconnected, commercially ambitious but strategically responsible, and capable of turning disagreement into dialogue rather than estrangement. The reset has begun. The real challenge now is to give it permanence, purpose and strategic depth. In a world increasingly divided into competing camps, India and Canada should choose partnershipnot because they agree on everything, but because they understand that their shared interests are greater than their differences. NC, BJP set for political face-off today in Srinagar

Srinagar, Sept 1: Jammu and Kashmir is set for a political face-off today with the ruling National Conference (NC) and opposition BJP announcing protests against each other over issues ranging from restoration of statehood to the Omar Abdullah Governments alleged failure to fulfil its electoral commitments. The National Conference has announced that its workers will peacefully gherao BJP headquarters in Jammu and Srinagar, demanding accountability from the Union Government over promises made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court regarding restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. In a post on X, the NC said its demands included constitutional guarantees, restoration of statehood, clearance of the reservation file and justice for the people of J&K. The party maintained that the mandate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir was not a blank cheque and should be respected. The NCs announcement comes a day after the BJP announced its plan to gherao the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar, accusing the Omar Abdullah-led Government of failing to deliver on its electoral promises. BJP J&K spokesperson Altaf Thakur has targeted the Government over the recent 6.83 per cent increase in power tariffs, describing the hike as unjustified and a burden on the common people. Thakur has also questioned the Government over its promises of 200 units of free electricity, 12 gas cylinders, one lakh jobs and free ration, alleging that the commitments made to the electorate remain unfulfilled. The BJP is expected to raise these issues during its protest outside the Civil Secretariat, seeking accountability from the Omar Abdullah Government over its performance and policy decisions. The simultaneous protests are set to bring the NC and BJP face-to-face politically, with both parties seeking to put the spotlight on issues they believe directly concern the people of Jammu and Kashmir. While the NC is seeking to shift the focus towards the Centres commitment on statehood and other constitutional and political issues, the BJP is training its guns on the UT administration over governance, power tariffs and implementation of electoral promises. Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in August 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370. The Supreme Court, in December 2023, upheld the constitutional validity of the Centres decision. With the Assembly now scheduled to meet later this month, today's parallel protests are likely to set the tone for a politically charged session, with both the ruling party and opposition preparing to press their respective agendas.

ACB Arrests Two Police Officers in Rs 15,000 Bribery Case

Srinagar: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday trapped and arrested two police officers in connection with an alleged bribery case involving a 15,000 demand for closing a police case. According to the ACB, it received a written complaint alleging that PSI Karanjeet Singh, the investigating officer in FIR No. 65/2026 registered at Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar, had allegedly demanded illegal gratification from the complainant for closing the case as Not Admitted between the parties. The complaint further alleged that the demand was made through his alleged accomplice, Sub-Inspector Ravi Jee Bhat of Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh. Following the complaint, the ACB conducted a verification, which prima facie established the allegations regarding the demand for illegal gratification. Subsequently, Case FIR No. 12/2026 was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). During the investigation, the ACB constituted a trap team. The team allegedly caught Sub-Inspector Ravi Jee Bhat red-handed while demanding and accepting 15,000 from the complainant on behalf of PSI Karanjeet Singh. The bribe amount was recovered from Bhats possession in the presence of independent witnesses. He was subsequently taken into custody in accordance with law. The ACB said PSI Karanjeet Singh, who was allegedly involved in the demand, was subsequently arrested by the Bureau. Further investigation into the case is underway.

Srinagar, September 01 : MBBS and BDS interns across Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday continued their protest for the second consecutive day, demanding an increase in their monthly internship stipend from Rs 12, 300 to Rs 30,000 and seeking an early decision on a proposal already recommended by the Health and Medical Education Department. Peaceful demonstrations were held at medical institutions across the GMC's in Jammu and Kashmir, with intern doctors carrying placards and raising slogans demanding the immediate revision of their stipend. Intern doctor Dr Tasaduk of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar said the interns want the increased stipend to be implemented immediately. We want the stipend hike without any further delay. Until our demand is resolved, we will not remain quiet. The protest will continue and will not be stopped, Dr Tasaduk said. The agitation comes despite Health Minister Sakina Itoo stating that the interns demand was genuine and that a proposal for enhancing the stipend had already been processed and forwarded to the Finance Department for assessment of its financial implications. Srinagar, Aug 31: In a significant move aimed at facilitating the economical and hassle-free transportation of horticulture produce, particularly apples, to various domestic mandis and international destinations, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg on Monday urged fruit growers, traders and other stakeholders to make greater use of railway goods and freight services. The Divisional Commissioner was chairing a meeting convened to review the utilization of railway freight services for the transportation of horticulture produce from Kashmir. The meeting was attended by IGP Traffic, Kashmir, M. Soleman Choudhary; Deputy Commissioners, Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing, Ghulam Jeelani Zargar; officers of Northern Railway, Industries & Commerce and Information Departments, besides representatives of various fruit associations. During the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner directed all Deputy Commissioners and the Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing to hold consultations with fruit growers, traders, associations and aggregators to encourage wider and more economical utilization of railway freight services. He stressed that railway transportation should be increasingly utilized for long-distance destinations, as it can provide a cost-effective and efficient alternative for transporting large quantities of horticulture produce. He also directed the Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing to ensure effective coordination among fruit growers, traders, associations and railway authorities for the smooth movement of produce. The Div Com laid special emphasis on maximizing transportation of horticulture produce from Jablipora Mandi Anantnag. He further directed all Deputy Commissioners to explore and facilitate the transportation of a certain percentage of fruit consignments through railway services from their respective districts. Discussing the Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) service, the Divisional Commissioner directed Northern Railway officials to share an informational video with fruit associations highlighting the prescribed technical parameters for trucks, including permissible load height and other requirements, to facilitate its effective utilization. With regard to transportation of fruit by road, both Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and IGP Traffic Kashmir directed fruit associations to undertake extensive sensitization of truck drivers regarding adherence to the permissible load limits on the National Highway. They emphasized that overloading not only violates prescribed norms but also poses serious risks to road safety and traffic management. The officers cautioned that strict punitive action would be taken against vehicles found violating the prescribed load limits. Representatives of various fruit associations put forth their suggestions and sought long-term solutions for strengthening the transportation infrastructure for the horticulture sector, including improved connectivity of fruit mandis with the railway network. The representatives also expressed appreciation to the administration for its continued support and facilitation of the fruit industry. Earlier, the Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing made a detailed presentation on apple production in Kashmir, existing transportation arrangements and the economic advantages of utilizing railway goods and freight services for the movement of horticulture produce.

He said young doctors, who represent the future of Jammu and Kashmirs healthcare system, work under demanding conditions and often undertake exhausting duties and shifts extending up to 36 hours. Despite their role in patient care and hospital functioning, he said, their stipend remained considerably lower than that offered in several other parts of the country for comparable responsibilities. The J&K Government must take this issue seriously, engage with the protesting medical interns and work towards an early and fair resolution, he said. Emphasising the importance of the medical profession, he said those who dedicate their lives to healing and serving humanity deserve dignity, recognition and fair support. Referring to Islamic teachings, he highlighted the significance of saving and serving humanity, recalling the Quranic teaching: Whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved all mankind. He reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir must support and encourage its young doctors, who would form the backbone of the regions healthcare system in the years ahead. He urged the government to positively consider the interns concerns and ensure that the issue was resolved at the earliest.

Rabi season takes off in Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 31: Director Agriculture Kashmir, Sartaj Ahmad Shah on Monday kick-started the sowing of Rabi season seeds at the Kitchen Garden, Lalmandi Srinagar, marking the commencement of the departments Rabi cultivation activities for the season. Deputy Director, Central Kashmir, Qazi Showkat, Seed Production Officer Showkat Mughal and Deputy Director Planning, Javaid Ahmad Shah accompanied the Director Agriculture Kashmir during the programme. During the programme, the Director participated in the sowing of Rabi crops and took stock of the preparations being undertaken at the Kitchen Garden for the upcoming season. He emphasized the importance of timely sowing, use of quality seed and adoption of recommended agronomic practices to ensure healthy crop growth and better productivity. The Director stressed that Kitchen Gardens play an important role in demonstrating improved cultivation practices and encouraging farmers and the general public to adopt vegetable cultivation for nutritional security as well as additional income generation. He directed the concerned officers and field functionaries to ensure that all necessary arrangements for Rabi cultivation are put in place well in advance and that farmers are adequately sensitized about suitable varieties, sowing schedules and scientific crop management practices. Seed Production Officer Srinagar briefed the Director regarding various initiatives taken by the Department for the effective utilization of the different resources at Seed Multiplication Farms across Kashmir, for optimum production of seed and seedlings. The Director appreciated the efforts of the concerned staff and called for continued focus on demonstration-based extension activities so that the latest agricultural technologies and best practices reach farmers effectively.

Srinagar, Aug 31:- Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo, on Monday reviewed a comprehensive, multi-faceted roadmap presented by the Department of Tourism for accelerating tourism development and upgrading visitor infrastructure across the Jammu Division, with emphasis on religious circuits, border tourism, adventure destinations and eco-tourism. The meeting, attended by Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism; Additional Chief Secretary, Finance; Additional Chief Secretary, Public Works Department; Divisional Commissioner, Jammu; and other officials. While reviewing the proposed interventions, the Chief Secretary called for expanding the roadmap to cover other high-potential destinations across the Jammu Division, particularly emerging tourism hubs such as Baderwah, Sanasar, Seven Lakes and other suitable destinations. The Chief Secretary also called for optimum utilization of tourism assets already created in Jammu city, including the Tawi Riverfront and Jambu Zoo, besides exploring additional activities and attractions that can draw visitors throughout the year. He emphasized that Jammu should not remain primarily a transit point for pilgrims, but evolve into a vibrant, diverse and all-season tourism destination, offering religious, cultural, recreational, adventure and nature-based experiences to visitors. On this occasion the ACS Finance, Shailendra Kumar, stressed the need to leverage the enormous pilgrim footfall at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine to expand the tourism economy of the wider Jammu region. He suggested setting an ambitious objective of encouraging at least 20 per cent of pilgrims visiting the Shrine to stay in and around Jammu for additional tourism experiences. He further advised the Tourism Department to package the regions local art, culture, music and cuisine as distinctive attractions and develop experiences in and around the districts surrounding Katra to encourage longer visitor stays. Earlier the ACS, Tourism Department, Dr Ashish Chandra Verma highlighted the status and proposed interventions under a comprehensive development plan encompassing major religious, adventure, border and eco-tourism destinations across the Jammu region. With respect to Purmandal-Utterbehni Pilgrim Circuit, he divulged that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) amounting to 45.88 crore has been submitted to the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, under the PRASHAD Scheme. The proposed interventions include extensive landscaping, bathing ghats along the Devika River, pathway illumination, public conveniences and comprehensive solid waste management systems to strengthen the pilgrim circuit. Regarding the Shivkhori Shrine the ACS revealed that a project costing 5 crore has been approved under the Tourism Work Plan 2026-27 for comprehensive upgradation of the shrine along with major works for other areas too. Giving out the detailed presentation the Director Tourism, Jammu, Dr. Vikas Gupta shared the major components of the proposal including construction of overhead shelter sheds along the track from Ram Mandir to Bhawan at a cost of 340.58 lakh, completion of a cafeteria and pre-fabricated rooms near the helipad, track repairs, additional water points and a dedicated waiting hall. About the Aithem Mega Adventure Hub & Food Village, he highlighted that the project is being developed in two phases over 215 kanals of land. Construction of the Phase-I access road is underway with Phase II proposed to be explored through a Public-Private Partnership model for dwveloping 16 major components, including bungee jumping, sky-cycling, skywalks, ethnic food stalls and cabin accommodation. To strengthen border tourism infrastructure, a project costing 19.52 crore for Suchetgarh Border Outpost has also been given the administrative approval recently. The proposed upgradation will increase seating capacity from 1,400 to 3,000 persons and introduce a VIP lounge, fine-dine restaurant, museum and projector room with tendering to be carried out soon. Moreover the Baradari River Rafting Destination in Reasi is also being prioritised under this renewed strategy. The first Phase of the White Water River Rafting destination has achieved 45 per cent physical progress under the CAPEX budget and is targeted for completion by November 2026. The project will provide computerized ticketing, dedicated facilities for differently-abled visitors, open-terrace cafs and enhanced safety infrastructure. A 18 crore DPR for Phase-II has also been submitted for docking, launching and passenger dispersal facilities. In addition to these the Basohli-Ranjit Sagar Lake is also given more attention for development here. The destination has been selected under the Government of Indias Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, a DPR with a tentative cost of 96.07 crore was submitted on August 10, 2026. The integrated development plan comprises 13 major components, including a dual zipline from Chanchloo Mata Mandir to the Fort Area, architectural illumination of Atal Setu Bridge, a waterfront recreation hub at the Tourism Reception Centre with floating boarding decks, a heritage pedestrian corridor and a hop-on hop-off heritage bus service. The comprehensive roadmap marks a concerted effort to diversify Jammus tourism offerings by integrating its religious heritage, natural landscapes, border attractions, adventure potential, cultural assets and modern recreational infrastructure. The initiative is aimed at positioning Jammu as a premier all-season tourist and pilgrim destination, while generating greater local economic opportunities through increased visitor footfall, longer stays, stronger destination circuits and wider participation of local communities in the tourism economy.

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 31: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg on Monday urged fruit growers, traders and other stakeholders to make greater use of railway goods and freight services for transporting apples and other horticulture produce to domestic mandis and international destinations. Garg was chairing a meeting convened to review the utilization of railway freight services for transportation of horticulture produce from Kashmir. The meeting was attended by IGP Traffic Kashmir M. Soleman Choudhary, Deputy Commissioners, Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing Ghulam Jeelani Zargar, officials of Northern Railway, Industries & Commerce and Information Departments, besides representatives of various fruit associations. The Divisional Commissioner directed all Deputy Commissioners and the Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing to consult fruit growers, traders, associations and aggregators and encourage them to utilize railway freight services on a wider scale. He stressed that rail transportation should be increasingly used for long-distance destinations, as it offers a cost-effective and efficient means of transporting large quantities of horticulture produce. He also called for better coordination among growers, traders, fruit associations and railway authorities to ensure smooth movement of consignments. Garg laid special emphasis on maximizing the transportation of horticulture produce from Jablipora Mandi in Anantnag through rail services. He further directed Deputy Commissioners to explore and facilitate movement of a certain percentage of fruit consignments by rail from their respective districts. Discussing the Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) service, the Divisional Commissioner asked Northern Railway officials to share an informational video with fruit associations explaining the technical requirements for trucks, including permissible load height and other parameters, to facilitate effective use of the service. On road transportation, Garg and IGP Traffic Kashmir directed fruit associations to undertake extensive sensitization of truck drivers regarding adherence to permissible load limits on the National Highway. They cautioned that overloading violates prescribed norms and poses serious risks to road safety and traffic management, warning that strict action would be taken against vehicles found violating the rules. Representatives of fruit associations put forward suggestions and sought long-term measures to strengthen transportation infrastructure for the horticulture sector, including improved connectivity of fruit mandis with the railway network. They also appreciated the administration for its continued support and facilitation of the fruit industry. Jammu, Aug 31: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra on Monday urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene in the ongoing protest by medical interns and ensure an early and meaningful enhancement in their stipend. Jammu and Kashmir has probably emerged as the lowest-paying region for MBBS and BDS interns among the states and Union Territories listed in a comparative chart circulated by protesting medical interns, with a monthly stipend of just Rs 12,300, prompting them to launch an indefinite strike on Monday demanding its immediate revision to Rs 30,000. In a letter addressed to the chief minister, Karra said the demand of the protesting medical interns was genuine and deserved sympathetic and immediate consideration. Medical interns constitute an essential part of the healthcare delivery system and shoulder significant responsibilities in hospitals while undergoing their compulsory internship, he said. These young doctors routinely work long and demanding hours, including 36-hour shifts, attending to patients and performing their duties with dedication and commitment, Karra said. He pointed out that the stipend being provided to medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir was considerably lower than that offered in several other parts of the country. When interns elsewhere are being provided better financial support for comparable responsibilities and working hours, the demand of our medical interns for a reasonable enhancement in stipend merits serious consideration, he said. Karra urged Omar to direct the authorities concerned to engage with the protesting interns, listen to their grievances and work towards an early and satisfactory resolution of the issue. The Congress leader said positive government intervention at this stage would not only address a legitimate concern of the medical fraternity but also boost the morale of young doctors who contribute significantly to the functioning of hospitals and healthcare institutions. He hoped the government would prioritise the matter and take necessary steps for a meaningful hike in the stipend of medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir, in line with their responsibilities and the prevailing stipends in other parts of the country. The interns said their stipend had remained unchanged for nearly seven years despite repeated representations and protests, while the cost of living and stipends offered to interns in several other states had increased substantially. According to the comparative figures displayed by the interns, Odisha tops the list with a monthly stipend of Rs 44,319, followed by West Bengal at Rs 43,099 and Assam at Rs 35,000. Karnataka pays Rs 30,000, while Kerala offers Rs 27,300 and Delhi and Meghalaya Rs 26,300 each. The stipend in Telangana is listed at Rs 25,900, while Arunachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh offer Rs 25,000 each. Tamil Nadu's stipend is shown at around Rs 25,000, followed by Haryana at Rs 24,310 and Andhra Pradesh at around Rs 21,840. Gujarat, Bihar, Goa and Himachal Pradesh are listed at around Rs 20,000 a month, while Puducherry offers Rs 18,000.

Manipur NRC protest turns violent in Kakching, police fire tear gas

A torchlight vigil in Manipur's Kakching district demanding NRC updation prior to the Census exercise in the northeastern state turned violent, with some protesters pelting the police with stones, and the law enforcers retaliating with tear gas shells, leading to injuries to a few agitators, officials said on Monday. Jammu, Aug 31: An ex-serviceman was killed after his throat was slit by a Chinese kite string while he was travelling through the Ring Road here, officials said on Monday. Naib Subedar (Retd) Lakhvinder Singh sustained critical injuries after coming into contact with the killer string while passing through Bishnah area on a two-wheeler late Sunday, the officials said. They said the retired soldier was immediately shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Singh was returning to his home in R S Pura after finishing work at an industrial unit in Bari Brahmana, where he was employed as a private security guard, the officials said. The sale and use of the Chinese kite-string or 'Manja' is banned by the authorities and several shopkeepers were arrested in recent past across Jammu for clandestinely dealing with the material. The latest death has sparked concerns over the enforcement of the ban, with residents demanding strict action against those selling and using the prohibited string. The officials said police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation is on to identify the culprits and bring them to book.
