J&K paid price for Indus Waters Treaty, it must remain suspended: Omar Abdullah
Srinagar, Aug 14:Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday hit out at Pakistan for staking a claim over the waters of rivers flowing through Jammu and Kashmir, questioning Islamabads professed sympathy for Kashmiris while opposing the regions use of its own water resources. Abdullah was responding to questions from reporters regarding Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifs latest remarks on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), in which he described water as Pakistans red line and warned of a direct response if the countrys water supplies were threatened. We have always been saying that our blood has been sucked these are our rivers. We had the first right on this. Pakistanis say they are great sympathisers of Kashmiris. But when it comes to water, their sympathy disappears. Where was their sympathy when we were denied permission to use our rivers? Abdullah said. The Chief Minister said the distribution of the Indus river system under the treaty had left Jammu and Kashmir bearing the consequences, arguing that India retained the waters of the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej while the Chenab, Jhelum and Indus were allocated to Pakistan. From then until today, we are suffering the consequences of this Indus Waters Treaty, Abdullah said, adding that the restrictions had affected the regions ability to fully utilise its water resources. He said Jammu and Kashmir had faced restrictions on drawing drinking water from the Chenab and on undertaking projects involving the Jhelum, including the proposed barrage at Tulbul that could facilitate navigation. From then until today, we are suffering the consequences of this Indus Waters Treaty. We could neither draw drinking water from the Chenab, nor could we use the Jhelum for navigation by building a barrage on Tulbul, nor could we stop water by building a big dam on any of our rivers, he said. The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan with the World Banks involvement, has governed the utilisation of the waters of the Indus river system for decades. India placed the treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam terror attack, with New Delhi linking its decision to Pakistans alleged support for cross-border terrorism. Abdullah argued that the treaty should not be restored in its previous form. Our blood has been sucked, and now that the Indus Waters Treaty has been cancelled, it should remain cancelled so that we can make proper use of this water, the Chief Minister asserted. His remarks came amid renewed tensions between India and Pakistan over the treaty and water resources. Sharif, while reiterating Pakistans position, said Islamabad was committed to peace but would strongly defend what it considers its water rights. Meanwhile, Abdullah also condemned the recent attack on Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra. We strongly condemn this, and such attacks should not take place, Abdullah said, referring to the incident in which Badal was injured in an attack at the religious complex and subsequently taken to hospital. The Chief Minister questioned the effectiveness of the security arrangements provided to the SAD chief, noting that Badal had been targeted previously as well. Before this also, there was an attack in Amritsar, after which it was stated that special care would be taken of his security, that there will be Z-plus security. But where is the Z-plus? The attack took place for the second time; this time he was even injured, and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment, he said. Abdullah said political differences or grievances should be addressed through democratic means rather than violence. Such attacks should not happen in a democracy, and if there is any grievance against anyone, people can express that through elections, he said, adding that attacks on political leaders were very dangerous for democracy.
