Starting today, Oklahoma residents can add a digital version of their driver's license to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch. The digital ID can be used to display proof of identity or age at TSA checkpoints in select airports, at select businesses, and in select apps, but the number of places where it is accepted is still quite limited. Oklahoma is the 16th state to implement support for Apple Wallet IDs in the U.S., joining Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. The feature is also available in Puerto Rico and works with Japan's My Number Card. Apple has also been preparing for the feature to go live in North Carolina and Utah in the coming months, and years ago it announced that Connecticut, Kentucky, and Mississippi were committed to launching the feature at some point. To set up the feature, open the Wallet app on the iPhone and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, tap on Driver's License and ID Cards, select Oklahoma from the list, and follow the on-screen steps to complete the process. Then, you can present your digital ID where it is accepted without handing over your device. You can present an Apple Wallet ID where accepted by simply tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch on an identity reader. Then, you will be able to view the specific information being requested by the TSA or business. Only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested identity information released from your device. As mentioned, you do not need to unlock, show, or hand over your device to present an Apple Wallet ID in person, ensuring user privacy. Apple Wallet IDs are generally not accepted by law enforcement, so carrying a physical ID is still legally required for traffic stops. In addition, the number of businesses that accept Apple Wallet IDs is still quite small. At least for now, Apple Wallet IDs are designed to be a convenient alternative where they are accepted. The Clock India Has Not Built Yet
TECHNOLOGY & NATIONAL SECURITY In 1999, during the Kargil conflict, India asked the United States for GPS data over the heights and was turned down. That refusal is the founding document of India's own satellite navigation programme. NavIC exists because somebody in Washington decided Indian soldiers did not need to know where they were standing. Twenty-seven years on, the government has made Indian time legally binding. On 27 August, the Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, as G.S.R. 761(E). Indian Standard Time becomes the only lawful reference for civil, commercial and legal purposes. For telecommunications, financial services, energy and data centres, the rules also name the sources time may be drawn from. GPS is not one of them. Four weeks earlier, the same government had told Parliament that NavIC could no longer fix a position on its own. A mandate arrives before the machinery Rule 7 is the widest clause. No entity may use, display or record any time reference other than IST, for any purpose. Storing timestamps in Coordinated Universal Time is ordinary practice in server logs worldwide. Whether the rule reaches that, or only the time an organisation holds out as official, the text does not say. MediaNama, which reported the rules first, has asked the department and has no answer yet. Rule 6(4) then makes accuracy the responsibility of whoever uses the signal rather than whoever supplies it, and Rule 6(5) requires that user to monitor deviation, log it, and prove traceability to the national standard. A stock exchange does this already. A cooperative bank or a regional internet provider in Srinagar does not. Rule 9(6) extends redundancy obligations to defence, power grids, telecommunications, banking and data centres, then adds enterprises and an open-ended etcetera. That is a scope with no visible edge. The rules take effect 180 days after gazette publication, placing commencement in early 2027. The constellation that cannot navigate On 29 July, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Space Dr Jitendra Singh told the House that only three NavIC satellites still deliver positioning, navigation and timing service. Four are needed for a fix. His wording was careful. NavIC cannot provide standalone positioning, he said, but its timing service is functional. The distinction is real. Positioning needs a fourth satellite to solve for the error inside the receiver's own clock. Timing is a lighter demand. The difficulty is the sentence after it. Users face no operational vulnerability, the reply said, because Indian receivers work in a multi-constellation environment combining NavIC with GPS, Galileo and GLONASS. The armed forces do the same. One arm of the government defends the condition of NavIC by pointing at GPS. Another arm, four weeks later, writes GPS out of the authorised list for the sectors where failure hurts most. The rest of the picture is thin. IRNSS-1B went up in 2014 and has outlived its ten-year design life. NVS-02 was stranded in transfer orbit in January 2025 after a valve failure. NVS-03 sits ready at Sriharikota with a launch expected in early September, and two more are to follow without a date. Why a clock is a target Between November 2023 and February 2025, airlines reported 465 GPS interference and spoofing incidents in Indian airspace, a figure the Civil Aviation Ministry has confirmed in Parliament. Most were in the Amritsar and Jammu corridors. Readers here will not need that geography explained. The problem has since moved inland. Spoofing was reported around Indira Gandhi International Airport late last year, with interference logged at Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru. The DGCA now wants pilots and controllers to report a GNSS anomaly within ten minutes. Timing sits underneath much more than aviation. Mobile networks hand a call from one tower to the next on the assumption that both agree about the microsecond. Power grids compare phase measurements across state boundaries. Every log a forensic investigation depends on is a claim about when something happened. That is why time is worth attacking. An adversary who shifts your clock steals nothing. He corrupts the record that any later inquiry will read. Which is also the strongest argument for the new rules. GPS is a foreign military signal, it was withheld from India once, and it is being interfered with along the western border now. Two routes to the same room The objection is not to the direction. It is to the order of operations. Rule 8(2) obliges the Director, Legal Metrology to publish the addresses and access protocols of every authorised timing service. No such list is public. Engineers were asking for exactly this in 2022, when CERT-In first told organisations to synchronise their clocks with NIC or NPL servers. Publication is now a legal duty and still has not happened. Capacity is no clearer. Answering an RTI filed by MediaNama in December 2022, CSIR-NPL said it ran 20 NTP servers, all of them at one location in Delhi. NIC declined to give a count, citing security. Those figures are nearly four years old, and nothing public has replaced them. Then there is the part that is easy to miss. NavIC does not keep independent time. Published metrology work on the IRNSS Network Timing Facility describes its time scales as linked to UTC(NPLI), the realisation of universal time maintained at CSIR-NPL in Delhi. For a bank in Jammu, NavIC and the national time servers are not two independent sources of truth. They are two routes to the same laboratory. The rules also decline to say how accurate is accurate enough. Rule 2(a) defines accuracy as conformity to IST without a millisecond or microsecond figure anywhere in eight pages, and Rule 10 provides for audits against a standard the text never states. Rule 11 says a breach is punishable under the Act without naming a section or an amount, and Rule 8(5) lets the Director charge a fee for legally mandated time. Bottom Line Sovereign time is the right objective. A country that refused a navigation signal during a war should not run its banks and its grid on a foreign military system it cannot audit or repair. But a mandate is not a capability, and withdrawing the fallback before the primary is ready produces exposure with better paperwork. Three things ought to be public before these rules bite. The authorised source list Rule 8(2) already requires. The current number and physical distribution of NTP and PTP servers at NPL and NIC. And an answer to a question nobody in government has yet been asked: what happens to Indian time if the Delhi facility goes dark? Its a standards-based approach ( ISO 18013-5 ) that is meant to be more secure and private than physical identification, as well as finally closing one of the last loopholes that make people unable to leave the house without their wallet. If your state doesnt support drivers licenses in Wallet (or you dont have a drivers license), but you have an active passport, you can now add a Digital ID to your Apple Wallet . The transaction starts over NFC and negotiates a secure Bluetooth LE sessionno barcodes. Whats more, apps that require age identification (like renting a car or ordering alcohol) can use the info stored in Wallet to provide proof of age. Whats nice about digital IDs is that they can transfer only the information needed, and nothing more. A bouncer who wants to check ID at the entrance to a venue would have a reader that shows your ID photo and simply confirms if youre over 21, for examplethey wouldnt get your actual date of birth, ID number, address, or any other info they dont need. The same goes for apps that need age verification. With the Apple Wallet implementation, nothing is transferred without your authentication, so not only do you not have to hand your phone over to anyone else, it wouldnt even help to do so. Why cant I add my drivers license? If you are in the U.S. it may be that your state doesnt yet support the feature. If your State is in the list above and you cant add your license it may be because of an Apple Server outage ( check that here ). If thats not the issue then Apple recommends contacting your issuing authority. If you are outside the U.S. its bad news. The ability to add ID and drivers licenses is likely unavailable where you are. Its not for Apple to implement the feature, but rather a decision on a country level. The U.K. government has announced plans for a digital version of the Driving Licence and other countries are likely to do the same.

New Delhi, Aug 24: The BJP on Monday hit back at Congress over its charge that the Modi government is pursuing an aggressive privatisation agenda in the space sector, asserting that the expansion of private participation is enabling ISRO to focus on frontier missions while industry scales up manufacturing and launch capabilities. The remarks came after Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh accused the government of strangulating and emasculating the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and pursuing an aggressive privatisation agenda for the space programme just as it has for nuclear energy. Ramesh claimed recent reports about ISRO's future role in India's space programme raised legitimate concerns, given the capabilities built by the organisation over six decades. MoS (Space) Jitendra Singh rejected Ramesh's criticism, saying India's space programme is ot being scaled back, but being scaled up, with ISRO focusing increasingly on frontier missions such as Gaganyaan, Chandrayaan-4 and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, as well as future missions to the Moon, Venus and Mars. Under PM Narendra Modi, India's space sector has taken a global trajectory by expanding from a predominantly government-led programme into a wholesome ecosystem integrating ISRO, industry and space startups. India's space programme is not being scaled back. It is being scaled up, he said in a post on X. At the same time, as India moves towards an ambition of 50 launches a year, industry has to become the manufacturer at scale, while ISRO develops the next generation of technologies and missions. This is the natural evolution of India's space programme, Singh added. He accused Ramesh of unning down Indian achievements and casting doubt on every step forward. Citing the growth of the space sector and the emergence of private players, Singh said the number of foreign satellites launched by ISRO has risen from 35 before 2014 to 430 today, while the number of space startups has grown to around 440 from just a handful in 2014. He cited Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 reaching orbit on July 18 this year as the first privately developed Indian rocket to do so. If India is to build a USD 44-billion space economy, we need many things happening simultaneously: ISRO research in the frontier technologies, private rocket factories, satellite manufacturing facilities, dedicated assembly, integration and testing infrastructure, commercially operated launch facilities, and a much deeper supply chain, Singh said. He noted that Sriharikota will remain at the heart of ISRO's major launch programmes, including PSLV, LVM3 and human spaceflight, while Kulasekarapattinam will add capacity for the growing small-launch sector. That is not ISRO versus industry. The model is ISRO and industry together. Together, they are writing the next chapter of India's space story, Singh said. BJP national spokesperson and national media co-in-charge Pradeep Bhandari also defended the government's space sector reforms, saying the opening up of the sector has enabled private companies and startups to move from being suppliers to developers of rockets, satellites and complete space systems. ISRO gave India a formidable technological foundation over decades. The Modi government's reforms have sought to build on that legacy by enabling ISRO, private industry, startups and investment to grow together, he said. New Delhi, Aug 18: Gold price climbed Rs 2,000 to Rs 1.58 lakh per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday, extending gains for a second straight session as retailers and stockists stepped up buying. The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity appreciated by Rs 2,000 to Rs 1,58,800 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) from Monday's closing level of Rs 1,56,800 per 10 grams. Silver also advanced Rs 730 to Rs 2,40,730 per kilogram(inclusive of all taxes), after remaining flat at Rs 2,40,000 per kg for two sessions, according to the All India Sarafa Association. Globally, spot gold traded 0.5 per cent lower to USD 4,394.57 per ounce, and silver dropped a little over 1 per cent to USD 65.08 per ounce. Gold was hovering around USD 4,392 per ounce as crude oil rebounded on supply concerns emanating from West Asia, Praveen Singh, Head of Commodities at Mirae Asset ShareKhan, said. Oil prices gained after the 60-day US-Iran ceasefire expired on Monday. While the period can be extended, neither side is willing to do so, he said.
