White abalone faced extinction due to overfishing and sparse populations. Scientists initiated a captive-breeding program, producing millions of eggs and larvae. Hundreds of juvenile abalone were released into the wild in 2019. A live wild white abalone was recently spotted after five years. This effort offers a chance for the species to reproduce again.
